Focusing of Azimuthally Polarized Hyperbolic-Cosine-Gaussian Beam  [PDF]

Abstract: The focusing properties of azimuthally polarized hyperbolic-cosine-Gaussian (ChG) beam are investigated theoretically by vector diffraction theory. Results show that the intensity distribution in focal region of azimuthally polarized ChG beam can be altered considerably by decentered parameters, and some novel focal patterns may occur for certain case. On increasing decentered parameters, ring shape of focal pattern can evolve into four-peak focal pattern, and azimuthal field component affects focal pattern more significantly than radial field component. Optical gradient force is also calculated to show that the focusing properties may be used in optical tweezers technique.

Abstract: The hardness of cooked rice is one of the most important criteria which determine the rice quality. The commonly used near-infrared reflectance (NIR) method is still in argument due to its indirectness and possible error. In this paper, a mechanical method was proposed and its principle, automation, components and operative reliability were evaluated and compared with the NIR method. The results showed that the mechanical testing method can accurately detect the rice quality and were consistent with the NIR testing data. This new mechanical method can be effectively used in rice quality testing and branding with the advantage of simplicity, accuracy and reliability.

Abstract: A synthesis method for the production of porous bulk metallic glass (BMG) is introduced. This method utilizes the superplastic forming ability of amorphous powder in the supercooled liquid (SCL) state and intenerating salt mixture as a placeholder to produce BMG foam by using a hot die pressing method. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were employed to characterize the morphologies of foaming structure, the crystallization and percentage of amorphous phase of the as-produced porous BMG. The results suggest that the formation of porous structure by superplastic forming process is feasible. Good bonding effect was observed between amorphous powder particles. None of crystalline phases was formed during hot pressing, and less than 3.5% percent of residual salt was enclosed in the foam. In order to remove any residual salt particles, salt preform with three-dimensional network and good connectivity is necessary.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a severe childhood form of muscular dystrophy. Both the severe form and its milder form of Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD) are caused by the mutation of dystrophin gene. Different from some other genetic diseases such as hemophilia that can be treated by replacement therapy, there is no effective therapy for muscular dystrophy in conventional medication. Gene editing technology from the recently developed engineered nucleases such as TALENs has been successfully employed in genome modification of a variety of species, and will be applied in gene therapy of selected human diseases. The genetic basis of DMD and BMD indicates that DMD is a good target for gene therapy through returning the reading frame of dystrophin gene. Gene therapy strategies described here may apply to many other genetic diseases. Wider application of TALENs in gene therapy have the potential to dramatically prolong the lifespan of individuals with genetic diseases.

Subsurface lateral flow from hillslope and its contribution to nitrate loading in streams through an agricultural catchment during subtropical rainstorm events

Abstract: Subsurface lateral flow from agricultural hillslopes is often overlooked compared with overland flow and tile drain flow, partly due to the difficulties in monitoring and quantifying. The objectives of this study were to examine how subsurface lateral flow generated through soil pedons from cropped hillslopes and to quantify its contribution to nitrate loading in the streams through an agricultural catchment in the subtropical region of China. Profiles of soil water potential along hillslopes and stream hydro-chemographs in a trenched stream below a cropped hillslope and at the catchment outlet were simultaneously recorded during two rainstorm events. The dynamics of soil water potential showed positive matrix soil water potential over impermeable soil layer at 0.6 to 1.50 m depths during and after the storms, indicating soil water saturation and drainage processes along the hillslopes irrespective of land uses. The hydro-chemographs in the streams, one trenched below a cropped hillslope and one at the catchment outlet, showed that the concentrations of particulate nitrogen and phosphorus corresponded well to stream flow during the storm, while the nitrate concentration increased on the recession limbs of the hydrographs after the end of the storm. All the synchronous data revealed that nitrate was delivered from the cropped hillslope through subsurface lateral flow to the streams during and after the end of the rainstorms. A chemical mixing model based on electricity conductivity (EC) and H+ concentration was successfully established, particularly for the trenched stream. The results showed that the subsurface lateral flow accounted for 29% to 45% of total stream flow in the trenched stream, responsible for 86% of total NO3 -N loss (or 26% of total N loss), and for 5.7% to 7.3% of total stream flow at the catchment outlet, responsible for about 69% of total NO3 -N loss (or 28% of total N loss). The results suggest that subsurface lateral flow through hydraulically stratified soil pedons have to be paid more attention for controlling non-point source surface water pollution from intensive agricultural catchment particularly in the subtropical areas with great soil infiltration.

The system utilizes a single-chip AT89C51 microcomputer as a core processor, programmed by Microsoft Visual C++6.0 to communicate with a PC via a full-speed PDIUSBD12 interface chip. The programming is based on a slow-breath guided algorithm in which the respiratory signal serves as a physiological feedback parameter. Inhalation and exhalation by the subject is guided by music signals.Results and conclusion: Our study indicates that this microbreathing sensor system may assist in slow-breath training and may help to decrease blood pressure.Keywords: hypertension, microbreathing sensor, single-chip microcomputer, slow-pace breathing

Abstract: Fractionation of a butanol extract of Senecio cannabifolius Less. led to the isolation of two novel monoterpenoid derivatives, named cannabiside D and cannabiside E, whose structures were determined by spectroscopic analyses as 1-(2-hydroxy-2,6,6-trimethyl-4-β-D- glucosyloxy-cyclohexylidene)-butane-2, 3-dione, 6-Hydroxy-3-(3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl- but-1-enyl)-2, 4,4-trimethyl-cyclohex-2-enone, along with two known glycosides. All the compounds had antibacterial activity, showing particularly potent activity against Staphylococcus aureus IFO 3060 and Bacillus subtilis .
An Integrity Batch Report Scheme Based on the Waiting Stack

Abstract: An integrity batch report protocol based on the waiting stack is proposed, which aims at solving the bottleneck problem of the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) signature of integrity report. In the protocol, integrity attestation requests are placed sequentially in a waiting stack with constant head part and varying length. The TPM processes the integrity batch report one after another and thus the flexibility problem of trusted gateway can be solved efficiently. This study also proposes a data compressing method based on the Merkle tree to reduce the communication complexity in processing integrity batch report. The length of fresh number connection string transferred to the challenger can be compressed from mx20 bytes to log2mx20 bytes. The laboratory result indicates that the responding capacity of gateway adopting integrity batch report protocol is prior to adopting TCG integrity report protocol and the processing capacity of gateway can be improved from 1~3.3 to 32~256 times per second.

Abstract: Femtosecond electron diffraction is used to directly resolve the atomic motions involved in the ring closing reaction induced in a photochromic single crystal. The measurements were performed using our newly developed setup capable of delivering sub-500 fs electron bunches containing 106 electrons per pulse. Theoretical calculations were also performed.
