Abstract:

A scheme for chaotic signal generation in a semiconductor ring laser (SRL) with optical feedback is presented. Part of the output is returned to the SRL, resulting in chaotic oscillation.

Abstract: In the title compound, [Ag2(C14H14N4)2](C12H7O4)2·4H2O, the dinuclear dication has crystallographically imposed inversion symmetry. Each AgI ion is bicoordinated in a slightly distorted linear coordination geometry by the N atoms of two ligands, resulting in the formation of a 22-membered metallamacrocycle. In the dication, π–π interactions are observed between the imidazole rings, with centroid–centroid distances of 3.528 (3) and dihedral angles of 9.92 (9)°. The crystal structure is stabilized by intermolecular O—H...O hydrogen bonds and π–π interactions involving the benzene rings of adjacent dications, with centroid–centroid distances of 3.651 (2) .

Abstract: The results of experiment using the techniques of chromosome analysis for studying natural population components of cotton aphid, Aphis Gossypii Glover, are reported in this paper. The somatic chromosome preparation of cotton aphid were prepared in the different periods. Karyotype analysis was based on chromosome length and G-banding patterns. The relusts show that the natural population of the aphid is a complex population consisted of the normal karyotype (NK), the 1,2 translocated and 1,3 translocated karyotype (T1-2 and T1-3) aphids. The proportion of each karyotype changes with time. The NK aphids are the dominant population on the Chinese prickly ash and cotton at seedling stage. The T1-2 aphids are the dominant on cotton at the bud and boll stage. The karyotype of aphids on different host plant, such as Chinese prickly ash, pomegranate, rose of Sharon, cotton, and in the different regions such as Zhengzhou, Nanyang, Xinxiang, Shangqiou, Lingbao in Henan Province, were compared. No differences were discovered. In the article, the author discusses the problems of emergence and maintaining of translocated karyotype aphids and believes that these aphids can't be eliminated at the sexual stage because of the rapid reproduction and parthenogenesis characteristic of the cotton aphids.
Feeding Deterrence of Common Spices against Helicoverpa armigera Larvae  [PDF]

Abstract: Edible spices with strong smells or heavy tastes may be a promising resource of feeding deterrents. We compared the feeding deterrence of the ethanol extracts of 21 common spices against the larvae of a generalist pest species, Helicoverpa armigera, using a multiple-choice leaf disc bioassay. The results show that Zanthoxylum bungeanum extract (as a reference) always evoked significant feeding deterrence, while Piper nigrum (both black pepper and white pepper), Piper longum, and Angelica dahurica evoked the strongest and equivalent feeding deterrence. The potent feeding deterrent activity of Piper species may be a common characteristic at genus level.

Abstract: Information is lacking regarding the visual cues used by Helicoverpa armigera moths during nectar feeding. Here, we investigated the preference for radial gradient patterns in H. armigera moths. The results indicated that both sexes shared a preference to plain flower models of blue and cyan. The radial gradient pattern (cyan as nectar guide color and blue as petal color) was more attractive than its component plain colors (cyan or blue), especially in male moths. Number of corolla petals did not influence the attractiveness of the cyan-blue pattern. The addition of a tertiary floral attractant to white-blue or cyan-blue radial gradient patterns could dramatically enhance the attractiveness of visual cues in males rather than females, suggesting that males gave a higher weight in olfactory modality than females gave, while females gave a higher weight in vision modality than males gave. All together, we found an optimal combination of floral cues in H. armigera sexes as follows: A tertiary floral attractant (2 μL dose of phenylacetaldehyde, benzyl acetate, and salicylaldehyde mixed in 26:15:2) added to white-blue radial gradient flower model (3 cm in diameter). To our knowledge, this is the first time that rose curve and radial gradient tools were used to simulate floral pattern in the studies of flower-visiting insects.
Does the Depreciation of RMB Exchange Rate Inhibit the Innovation of Export Enterprises?  [PDF]

Abstract: Based on the sample of Chinese A-share listed companies from 2011-2016, this paper examines the impact of RMB exchange rate depreciation on enterprise innovation from the perspective of investment motivation. The study found that the devaluation of the RMB exchange rate significantly inhibited the innovation of export enterprises. In the sample of export enterprises, this paper uses OLS regression to find that RMB devaluation significantly inhibits the innovation of export enterprises. Further study on the exporting enterprises group found that this conclusion is only significant in the sub-sample of private enterprises, small scale enterprises and enterprises with high industry competition degree. Because these enterprises have a stronger motivation to pursue profits, in case that the depreciation of RMB exchange rate is conducive to exports, they are more likely to increase their investment in production in order to expand their exports, ignoring innovation investment. This shows that the export enterprises are in the face of the short-term profit-making opportunities arising from the devaluation of the RMB, and the weakening of motivation for investment innovation is the mechanism of devaluation of the RMB to curb enterprise innovation. Finally, in the robustness test, this paper considers the lagging effect of RMB depreciation, and replaces the innovation index of enterprises, and the results are still consistent with the main regression results.
Transcriptome Analysis and Discovery of Genes Involved in Immune Pathways from Hepatopancreas of Microbial Challenged Mitten Crab Eriocheir sinensis

Abstract: Background The Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis is an important economic crustacean and has been seriously attacked by various diseases, which requires more and more information for immune relevant genes on genome background. Recently, high-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) technology provides a powerful and efficient method for transcript analysis and immune gene discovery. Methods/Principal Findings A cDNA library from hepatopancreas of E. sinensis challenged by a mixture of three pathogen strains (Gram-positive bacteria Micrococcus luteus, Gram-negative bacteria Vibrio alginolyticus and fungi Pichia pastoris; 108 cfu·mL?1) was constructed and randomly sequenced using Illumina technique. Totally 39.76 million clean reads were assembled to 70,300 unigenes. After ruling out short-length and low-quality sequences, 52,074 non-redundant unigenes were compared to public databases for homology searching and 17,617 of them showed high similarity to sequences in NCBI non-redundant protein (Nr) database. For function classification and pathway assignment, 18,734 (36.00%) unigenes were categorized to three Gene Ontology (GO) categories, 12,243 (23.51%) were classified to 25 Clusters of Orthologous Groups (COG), and 8,983 (17.25%) were assigned to six Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways. Potentially, 24, 14, 47 and 132 unigenes were characterized to be involved in Toll, IMD, JAK-STAT and MAPK pathways, respectively. Conclusions/Significance This is the first systematical transcriptome analysis of components relating to innate immune pathways in E. sinensis. Functional genes and putative pathways identified here will contribute to better understand immune system and prevent various diseases in crab.

Abstract: The Solitary Reaper is one of William Wordsworth’s representatives which portrays an Irish girl working and singing solitarily in a field. This poem fully reflects the loneliness of the poet. He uses varying wording and phrasing, the lonely image of the reaper, the expanding of the lonely music, and the way of expressing his loneliness to set the lonely atmosphere. Therefore, it is necessary to thoroughly illustrate the diction and rhetoric devices which help to convey the sense of loneliness of the poet.
Application of tumor-node-metastasis staging 2002 version in locally advanced hepatocellular carcinoma: is it predictive of surgical outcome?

Abstract: We retrospectively reviewed 298 patients with pT3-4N0M0 HCC who underwent hepatic resection from 1993 to 2000 in an academic tertiary hospital. Overall survival (OS) and cumulative recurrence rate (CRR) of the four categories of locally advanced HCC patients were compared.In multivariate analysis, major vascular invasion was identified as the most significant factor (HR = 3.291, 95% CI 2.362-4.584, P < 0.001) followed by cirrhosis status on OS, and was found to be the only independent factor of CRR (HR = 2.242, 95% CI 1.811-3.358, P < 0.001) in patients with locally advanced HCC. Among the four categories of locally advanced HCC, OS was significantly worse, and CRR was significantly higher in patients with HCC with major vascular invasion (pT3) than with multiple tumors more than 5 cm (pT3); or tumor invasion of adjacent organs (pT4); or perforation of visceral peritoneum (pT4). No significant differences were observed in OS or CRR between the latter three groups of patients.HCC with major vascular invasion, which are classified as pT3 under the current TNM staging, have the worst prognosis when compared with the other categories of pT3-4 disease.
