Macroalgas submareales de la bahía de Todos Santos, Baja California, México Submareal macroalgae of the Todos Santos Bay, Baja California, Mexico

Abstract: Con el fin de identificar y caracterizar la composición de especies de la zona submareal de la bahía de Todos Santos, Baja California, México; se realizaron muestreos de macroalgas marinas bentónicas en 7 sitios durante 1995-2000. Como resultado de 25 buceos Scuba entre 3 y 33 m de profundidad se encontraron 150 especies de macroalgas para el área de estudio; 10 son Chlorophyta, 26 Phaeophyta y 114 Rhodophyta. Del total, 47 son registros nuevos para el área de estudio y 2 de éstos, Faucheocolax attenuata Setchell y Minium parvum R.L. Moe, son nuevos para la flora marina del Pacífico de México. Se incluye una revisión de las investigaciones en las que se han considerado las macroalgas presentes en la bahía de Todos Santos y una discusión sobre la composición de las especies encontradas, su distribución vertical y reproducción, así como sobre las especies epífitas y parásitas del área. In order to identify and characterize the species composition of the subtidal zone of the Todos Santos Bay, Baja California, Mexico, benthic marine macroalgae were sampled at 7 sites from 1995 to 2000. We include a research that consider the macroalpths between 3 and 33 m we found a total of 150 species of macroalgae for the study area, of which 10 are Chlorophyta, 26 Phaeophyta and 114 Rhodophyta; 47 species represent new recogae in the Todos Santos Bay and a discussion on the composition of species found, its vertical distribution and reproduction, particularly the species epiphytes and parasites present in the study area.
Sediment transport trends in Bahía Concepción, Baja California Sur, Mexico, based on textural parameters and heavy mineral concentrations

Abstract: the dispersion pattern of the modern sediments of bahía concepción, baja california sur, mexico was obtained based on the spatial trends of their textural properties and heavy mineral content. the mclaren and bowles and leroux models were applied to a sediment texture data set. the mclaren and bowles method was the most appropriate for the present study due to the elongated nature of the bay and sampling design, but it was complemented by the leroux model, providing in some cases a lateral transport component. seven heavy minerals were identified and their sources were located with the aid of principal component analysis. two main sources were evident based on the spatial textural trends; one located between playa santispac and punta santa bárbara, and the other adjacent to the cadejé basin. a bi-directional transport pattern was found at the mouth of the bay with sediment being exported near the margins and imported through the deeper central portion. transport along the western margin was mostly towards the head of the bay, and towards the north along the eastern margin. in both cases the transport trends indicate a component of transport toward the deeper parts of the bay. a good agreement was found among the three methods in identifying the clastic-sediment sources and their main transport directions.

Differential Deterrent Activity of Natural Products Isolated from Allophylus edulis (Sapindaceae)  [PDF]

Abstract: The phytochemical study of Uruguayan specimens of Allophylus edulis (Sapindaceae) yielded the isolation of various natural products being some of them reported for the first time in this species. Although most of them are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom, some revealed in this study to have anti insect properties. Two sesquiterpenes (6,7-Epoxicaryophyllene and spathulenol), two phytosterols (sitosterone and sitosterol), a pentacyclic triterpene (lupeol) and a clerodane diterpene were isolated. 6,7-Epoxycaryophyllene, lupeol and sitosterol showed to be deterrent against the aphid Myzus persicae and the coleopteran Epilachna paenulata. Moreover, the crude ethanolic extract of twigs of A. edulis showed to be deterrent against both insect species being some of its fractions also active against another aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi. Various active compounds against different insect models have been isolated from the twigs extract of A. edulis. The results evidenced synergic as well as antagonistic effects in the mixture, summed to differential activity against the insects, a desirable attribute when developing botanical pesticides.
Pathology Isolation and Identification of Canine Herpesvirus (CHV-1) in Mexico  [PDF]

Abstract: This work presents the pathology description, isolation and identification of canine herpesvirus (CHV-1) in Mexico, a virus that causes a generalized hemorrhagic infection in puppies from the canidae family. Methods: Isolates were obtained from puppies that died within the first four weeks of life and had lesions consistent with canine herpesvirus. Results: The main gross lesions were petechial and ecchymotic hemorrhages in kidneys, liver and lungs; proliferative interstitial nephritis; multifocal necrosis in liver and kidneys; and encephalitis with intranuclear inclusion bodies. Herpesvirus was confirmed through direct immunofluorescence, electron microscopy and polymerase chain reaction for DNA polymerase and glycoprotein B genes. Discussion: Eight strains were isolated and identified as canine herpesvirus corresponding to three of the working cases with gross and microscopic lesions very similar to those described in the literature; then, isolates were confirmed by PCR gene amplification, positive reactions on immunofluorescence and observations from electron microscopy. This work represents the first report of this disease, including gross and histological lesions, and confirmation by isolation and identification of the canine herpesvirus in Mexico.

Abstract: Very typical situations of the Pediatric Surgery Services in the Pediatric Hospital of Cienfuegos may interfere with the appropriate development of the educational process. Consequently, students might not master the principles of medical practice in the most common surgical diseases in children, thus limiting its further application in their professional performances as basic general practitioners. To obtain more accurate information on the causes of this phenomenon is considered to be paramount in order to search for practical solutions to improve the educational process and to fulfil the goals of the teaching stage. The contents on the following information sources are analyzed in this paper: documents for higher education and for medicine career, publications and papers presented in scientific events (directly or indirectly related to the practice of Pediatric Surgery) and hospital statistics. This review was aimed at analyzing the situations that negatively affect the educational process during the pediatric surgery area teaching of fourth year medicine students. En el Hospital Pediátrico de Cienfuegos existen varias situaciones, propias del Servicio de Cirugía Pediátrica, que interfieren en el buen desarrollo del proceso docente educativo y pudieran, en consecuencia, malograr que los estudiantes dominen los principios de la actuación médica ante las enfermedades quirúrgicas más frecuentes en la edad pediátrica y no puedan aplicarlos en su actividad profesional como médicos generales básicos. Disponer de información más exacta de sus causas se consideró cardinal en el proceso de búsqueda de soluciones prácticas para perfeccionar el proceso y cumplir los objetivos en la formación del estudiante de medicina durante la estancia. En este trabajo se realiza un análisis del contenido de las siguientes fuentes de información: documentos de la carrera de Medicina y de la educación superior; publicaciones y trabajos presentados en eventos científicos, relacionados directa o indirectamente con la actividad del Servicio de Ci-rugía Pediátrica y las estadísticas hospitalarias, con el objetivo de valorar las situaciones que inciden desfa-vorablemente sobre el proceso docente educativo durante la estancia de cirugía pediátrica.
Sulphated Zirconia as an Eco-Friendly Catalyst in Acylal Preparation under Solvent-Free Conditions, Acylal Deprotection Assisted by Microwaves, and the Synthesis of Anhydro-Dimers of o-Hydroxybenzaldehydes

Abstract: A solvent-free approach is described for the regioselective synthesis of acylals (1,1-diacetates) in shorter reaction times and higher yields, compared to conventional methodology using solvents. In the protection reaction of the o-hydroxybenzaldehyde the formation of acetyl compounds and anhydro-dimers was observed. The deprotection reaction involves microwave (MW) exposure of diluted reactants in the presence of solid sulphated zirconia (SZ) catalyst that can be easily recovered and reused. The sulphated zirconia was recycled several times without any loss of activity.
Evaluación de la resistencia mecánica de la madera de melina (Gmelina arborea) unida con uniones de dedo (finger joint)

Abstract: La industria de la madera en Costa Rica fabrica cada día con mayor frecuencia elementos de madera con uniones de dedo ( finger-jointed). Estos elementos se utilizan tanto para la elaboración de piezas no- estructurales, como para la fabricación de elementos utilizados estructuralmente en la construcción, tales como las vigas laminadas. Atendiendo la solicitud de la industria maderera, se realizaron ensayos de laboratorio para conocer la calidad y la resistencia mecánica de uniones de dedo en piezas de melina (Gmelina arborea). Se ensayaron dos diferentes tipos de adhesivo; una emulsión de polivinilo catalizado de dos componentes (PVA catalizado) y un adhesivo de poliuretano de un componente (PU). La resistencia mecánica de las uniones se determinó, siguiendo el estándar ASTM D- 4688. Los resultados mostraron que en condición saturada y hervida, el adhesivo PVA pierde entre un 70 % y un 60 % respecto a su resistencia en condición seca, mientras que el adhesivo PU, pierde entre un 11 y un 24 % de la condición seca a la condición saturada y hervida respectivamente. Con base en los resultados obtenidos, se determinó que el adhesivo PU muestra resultados más prometedores que el PVA para su utilización elementos unidos con uniones de dedo estructurales para la construcción.
