Abstract: background: deep venous thrombosis (dvt) is a frequent and severe disease. prophylaxis is the best means to reduce its incidence, lowering morbidity and mortality rates caused by its complications. in a cost-effectiveness ratio, it is better to maintain a prophylactic routine than to treat an established disease. objective: to verify whether dvt prophylaxis is being properly and routinely used at hospital escola doutor josé carneiro (hejc), in maceió, brazil. methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study at hejc was carried out for a 6-month period. the sample was composed of 298 patients within different specialties. data were collected from medical records, and divided into clinical (68.5%) and surgical (31.5%). how dvt prophylaxis was performed was analyzed for each patient. clinical, pharmacological and surgical factors were investigated for all patients. based on these data, risk stratification was performed in accordance with the classification recommended by sociedade brasileira de angiologia e cirurgia vascular. statistical analysis was performed using software spss and the qui-square and bivariate correction tests, considering p value < 0.05. results: of the 298 patients analyzed, 204 belonged to medical clinic, in which 28.9% were low risk, 60.3% average risk and 10.8% high risk for dvt; and 94 patients belonged to surgical clinic, in which 43.6% were low risk, 52.1% average risk and 4.3% high risk. only 23% of patients in the clinical group and 2.1% in the surgical group were given adequate prophylaxis. conclusion: despite the efficiency of prophylaxis for dvt having been confirmed, it does not reach satisfactory levels in our country.

Abstract: background: deep venous thrombosis (dvt) is a multidisciplinary and frequent disease, also including complications such as pulmonary thromboembolism. mechanical prophylaxis is one of the best (due to its low cost and proven effectiveness) and simplest means to reduce its incidence; therefore, investigating its use as an attempt to enhance benefits to the patient and hospital service is of great importance. objective: to determine the frequency of mechanical prophylaxis for dvt at the emergency room dr. armando lages in maceió, brazil. methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study at the emergency room was carried out for an 8-month period. the sample was composed of 282 patients admitted to the nursing wards of various specialties. data were collected from medical records and by patient interview. each patient"s medical record was searched for use of mechanical prophylaxis for dvt, in addition to several factors for risk stratification, according to the brazilian society of angiology and vascular surgery. statistical analysis was performed using spss software and chi-square test, considering p < 0.05. results: a total of 282 patients were analyzed, 181 (64%) men and 101 (36%) women, mean age of 54.1 years. classification of risk was as follows: 210 (74.5%) were classified as high risk, 56 (19.8%) as moderate risk, and 16 (5.7%) as low risk. of all patients, 234 (83%) did not received prophylaxis and 48 (17%) did. there was no statistical difference between the data obtained in the research and those found in the literature (p = 0.065). conclusions: despite having its efficacy confirmed, mechanical prophylaxis for dvt has not reached satisfactory levels of use.

Case Reports in Medicine , 2010, DOI: 10.1155/2010/984765
Abstract: We describe the case of pulmonary hyalinizing granuloma in a 34-year-old asymptomatic man who presented with a pulmonary nodule apparent by chest radiography and computed tomography (CT). He had a history of previous treatment for tuberculosis. His laboratory data were normal. Bronchoscopy and CT-guided percutaneous transthoracic fine needle aspiration cytology were inconclusive. The diagnosis was revealed after the histopathological examination of an open lung biopsy.

Case Reports in Medicine , 2010, DOI: 10.1155/2010/616580
Abstract: Medullary thyroid carcinoma is a rare malignancy that arises from calcitonin-producing C-cells and frequently metastasizes to lymph nodes in the neck. Distant metastases may involve bone, lung, and liver. The infrequent number of cases limits the clinical nature and ability to optimize diagnostic tools. Here, we present a case of a micronodular radiographic pattern in metastatic medullary thyroid cancer in order to enhance awareness of the disease process. A case discussion and relevant review of the literature are provided.

Case Reports in Medicine , 2010, DOI: 10.1155/2010/361265
Abstract: Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma remains one of the most enigmatic lung cancers, demonstrating varied growth patterns, mixed histological features, and confusing clinical manifestations. This paper reports a case of an unusual form of presentation: a sclerosing type associated with desmoplastic reaction and cicatrization. A 75-year-old woman was admitted with persistent dry cough and progressive dyspnea. Physical examination showed bilateral inspiratory crackles. A chest radiograph and high-resolution computed tomography demonstrated confluent airspace nodules, forming areas of consolidation in both lungs, with signs of architectural distortion. The lung biopsy revealed a nonmucinous sclerosing bronchioloalveolar carcinoma.
