Revista de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81082010000100005
Abstract: introduction: this study presents the development and validation of the inventory of outcome expectancy in marijuana users (inventário de expectativas de resultados em usuários de maconha, ierum), which evaluates the outcome expectancy regarding marijuana use, and may be useful in the treatment and prognosis of marijuana-dependent individuals. method: the sample comprised 181 male (n = 145) and female (n = 36) marijuana users. their age ranged from 18 to 55 years old (28.34±8.57). one hundred and eighteen patients were hospitalized at a chemical dependency unit, 23 were being treated in an outpatient clinic, 25 were receiving treatment in a self-help group (drug addicts anonymous, alcoholic anonymous), and 15 were not being treated. the 17-item scale was developed based on the experience related to chemical dependency and scale validation, with the semantic validation being the first phase of the process. results: according to the factor analysis, the ierum was divided into five factors (emotional aspects, perception, craving, cognitive aspects, and sexual aspects) that accounted for 60.18% of the variance. conclusion: the ierum showed good psychometric properties and can be used to evaluate the outcome expectancy related to marijuana use.

Araujo, Renata Brasil;Oliveira, Margareth da Silva;Pedroso, Rosemeri Siqueira;Castro, Maria da Graa Tanori de;
Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-44462009000200002
Abstract: objective: the aim of this study was to investigate the association between the intensity of craving and the types of coping skills used by nicotine-dependent patients. method: this was an experimental study. the sample comprised 201 subjects, mean age 38.15 years. the participants were randomly divided into groups of zero, 30 and 60 minutes of nicotine abstinence. the following instruments were administered: the chart of sociodemographic data, the fagerstr?m test for nicotine dependence, the questionnaire of smoking urges, and the coping strategies inventory. results: the most frequently used coping strategies are presented in descending order: accepting responsibility, self-control and distancing. there was a positive correlation between the confrontive coping strategy and the total score on the questionnaire of smoking urges (rs = 0.146; p = 0.045) and the score on factor 1 (rs = 0.165; p = 0.023). conclusion: the most intense craving can lead nicotine-dependent individuals to use confrontive coping strategies that make them unable to control their emotions or to face the situations of high risk of relapse. this finding demonstrates that the treatment of smokers should include psychological education about the pitfalls of using these types of strategy and should teach them new types of coping strategies for craving management.

Abstract: introduction: smoking often presents comorbid anxiety and depression, disorders that are more frequent in women. objective: the aim of this study was to evaluate the association between severity of nicotine dependence and anxiety and depression symptoms in both male and female smokers. method: a cross-sectional study was performed using a convenience sample of 475 smokers from the general population. the instruments used were fagerstr?m test for nicotine dependence, beck depression inventory, beck anxiety inventory, and a social and demographic record sheet. results: in women, anxiety symptoms (f = 9.691; p < 0.01) and depression (f = 16.23; p < 0.01) were associated with severity of nicotine dependence. in men, only anxiety symptoms (f = 7.219; p = 0.001) were associated with severity of nicotine dependence. conclusion: women with severe nicotine dependence have more anxiety and depression symptoms, while severe male smokers only showed more anxiety. the results demonstrated the importance of evaluating these symptoms in the treatment of smokers in brazil.

Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2006000500013
Abstract: this study aimed to estimate the frequency and to correlate the possible causal agents and monitor the occurrence of multiple neonatal malformations in pelotas, rio grande do sul, brazil. the study included all births from 1990 to 2002 in the local maternity hospitals with birth weight > 500g. each newborn presenting a malformation (case) was assigned a live matched neonate (control) without any malformation and of the same sex. a database was established by filling out the eclamc - monitor forms, 1982 edition, tabulated with spss. statistical analysis used student t and c2. during the study period, 71,500 children were born, of whom 0.11% presented multiple malformations. significant results were found for birth weight, twin births, parents' ethnic background, paternal age, and number of previous abortions and stillbirths. in pelotas, the proportion of newborns with malformations during the study period was 1.37%. of these, 8.1% presented multiple malformations, predominantly in females and in births occurring during the winter.

International Journal of Morphology , 2006, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-95022006000100009
Abstract: imantodes cenchoa (duméril, 1853) is an arboreal, nocturnal and oviparous xenodontine snake, which feeds on amphibians and lizards. it is found in central and south america, including northern and central brazil. in this work, we investigated the relationship between topographic anatomy and habitat in i. cenchoa. twenty specimens (13 non pregnant females and 7 males) were examined. the topographic anatomy study was realized through observations of the internal anatomy, particularly the position and size of lung, heart, liver, left and right gonads and left and right kidneys. results showed that all the organs are located in a posterior position in relation to the snout vent length (svl). the centre of gravity is found at about 74% of svl in both males and females. in males, no positive allometry was observed among the positions of the organs. negative allometry in females was observed regarding the position of the anterior tip of the left kidney, the anterior and posterior tips of the right kidney and in both ovaries. in males, negative allometry is present in the position of all the organs. the distance between the last follicle and the cloaca was 8.78% of svl. our data corroborate the idea that the posterior position of all internal organs is linked to a habitat specialization of a snake, linking the arboreal species i. cenchoa with a relatively posterior internal topography

Araujo, Renata Brasil;Oliveira, Margareth da Silva;Pedroso, Rosemeri Siqueira;Miguel, Alessandra Cecília;Castro, Maria da Graa Tanori de;
Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0047-20852008000100011
Abstract: craving is usually defined as an intense desire for a substance. this is a rather controversial concept among the researchers on the chemical dependence area. objective: the objective of this study was to carry out a theoretical review concerning craving at psycinfo, medline, proquest, portal capes and science direct data bases. methods: the keywords used were craving, dependence and drug, and the searching period was between 1995 and 2007. results: the results showed that many different meanings can be found for craving, some relate it only to desire, while others consider it not only as desire, but also as the anticipation of the positive result from the use of the substance, the relief of abstinence symptoms or negative affect and intention to smoke, which reflects a multidimensional view of this construct. the ethimology of craving can be explained by the following models: behavioral, cognitive or psychosocial and neurobiological, being the option for one of them a factor that influences evaluation and usage. conclusion: as a conclusion, we are in favor of craving multidimensionality, as well as the need to use a biopsychsocial model that integrates the various models for treating chemical dependent patients. it is also necessary to highlight the importance of carrying out more studies in oder to understand craving, for it is one of the principal risks of relapse.
