Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762007005000118
Abstract: triatoma mexicana was described by herrich-schaeffer in 1848. in 1940, a male specimen was found in hidalgo. in 1970, this species was recorded in the state of queretaro. later, it was registered in guanajuato and san luis potosi. in the present paper we performed an investigation in 545 dwellings from three counties in the state of guanajuato, mexico, from march 2003 to may 2004. the search and capture of triatomines were seasonally performed indoors and outdoors. entomological indexes were calculated. the risk and no risk relations between triatomine presence and housing construction materials were analyzed. fourteen triatomines were collected indoors and 151 outdoors. the vectors were collected in houses built with either risky and non-risky materials. adults go indoors but do not settle there, hence, no relationship was found between the building materials and infestation of houses. conventional interventions like house improvement or insecticide spraying are not efficient for the control of t. mexicana, because its developmental cycle is accomplished outdoors in the area surrounding the houses.

Abstract: three different interventions to control triatoma dimidiata in the state of veracruz were implemented: x-1 = whole dwelling spraying, x-2 = middle wall spraying, x-3 = household cleaning. cyfluthrin was sprayed 3 times with 8 month intervals. after each spraying, insects were collected and sent to the laboratory to be recorded and to determine genus and species of the adult triatomine bugs, and nymphs were counted. trypanosoma cruzi presence was determined. with x-1, the infestation, colonization, and natural infection indexes were reduced to 0% in the 3 localities, with respect to t0. with x-2, the infestation index was reduced to 10% at t3 in 3 localities; the colonization index was reduced to 0% in only 1 locality at t3, and the natural infection index was reduced to 0% at t3. with x-3 the 3 indexes were not effectively reduced but they decreased with respect to the baseline study. insecticide application to the whole dwelling is a more efficient intervention than its application to only the lower half of the walls and to the cleaning of houses.
Turismo versus pesca artesanal. A propósito de La Reserva Marina de la Isla de La Graciosa y los Islotes del Norte de Lanzarote

PASOS : Revista de Turismo y Patrimonio Cultural , 2004,
Abstract: The Marine Reserve of La Graciosa Island and the islets of the North of Lanzarote was created in 1995 and, since then, the fishing activities of the local population and their local culture of the sea have been decreasing progressively while tourist activities are emerging as the panacea in a little island as La Graciosa with no more than 600 inhabitants. In this paper we try to analyse how these two processes are linked and what role is playing the local marine protected area in this case. We use not only qualitative information from fishers and their domestic units, but also quantitative data contrasting some objective parameters as the number of fishers and active fishing boats or service related business (restaurants, apartments, etc.), before and after the implementation of the marine reserve. In this sense, an important element is the perception of this institution from the local population, and the evolution of their attitude in favour or against it. These processes are related to the institutional design of the marine reserves in the Canary Island, where the participation of local fishing populations is severely limited
Periodic motions: How their period changes with amplitude of the oscillations and the friction?
H. G. Riveros,E. Cabrera Bravo
Latin-American Journal of Physics Education , 2007,
Abstract: The pendulum is a classical experiment, easy to perform and produces data with very simple equipment. The change in the period with the amplitude appears even with small amplitudes if you have some precision in the period. To measure amplitudes larger than 90° we need to change the cord for a rigid rod. We found that for a cylindrical magnet hanging horizontally in the Earth magnetic field, the movement equation is similar to that of a pendulum. We measured amplitudes and times so we can fit a numerical solution to the equation. The initial amplitude is near to 162° and we found that the change in the period comes mainly from the non-linear terms in the equation, and that the friction (either proportional to the angular velocity or its square) only reduces the amplitude with time. With periods from 9 to 4 seconds, the measurements with a protractor can be made manually for many oscillations. For the umerical calculations Δt needs to be 0.0001 seconds to conserve the energy.

The antigenic structure and antimicrobial susceptibility were studied in 99 strains isolated from patients with acute diarrhea (6 strains from an outbreak of digestive transmission disease in Santiago de Cuba) and a strain isolated from a patient who died from infections neurological syndrome (INS, meningitis). Four new serotypes (093, 994, 095, 096), wich had not been described in the world clasification, were identified from the Cuban isolated strains and were included in the International Serotyping Scheme by the International Reference Center located in Prague, Czeck Republic. For the first time in Cuba, the circulation of serotypes 017.H11, 011: H2, 023. H1a1c, 057: H3 which show cross reaction to Shiguella species was proved. Those strains from the outbreak of digestive disease belonged to serotype 050: H11 and had a thermostable toxin. The first case of infectious neurologic syndrome with Plesionomas shigelloides etiology reported in Cuba was described; the strain corresponded to serotype 050: H11. The worldwide reported pattern of antimicrobial resistance was demostrated.

Abstract: Objective: Measure the effects of Early Intervention ad modum Katona (EI-K) in high-risk premature infants by means of clinical, neurobehavioral, and neurophysiologic tests. Method: We used the Amiel-Tison neurologic examination, the Bayley Scale of Infant Behavior, and electroencephalography (EEG) recordings at 42 weeks of conceptional age, and after 6 months of treatment EI-K (n = 14) and compared these results with those of a group of infants without early intervention (nEI) (n = 11). Results: We found better performance of infants in EI-K than nEI group after 6 months of treatment in neurologic and behavioral examination measurements, but found no differences in EEG comparisons. Conclusion: Our data suggest significant benefit of the use of EI-K program over n-EI in the neurologic and neurobe-havior examinations of premature infants after 6 months of age.
