Mapping the Global Distribution of Livestock
Timothy P. Robinson, G. R. William Wint, Giulia Conchedda, Thomas P. Van Boeckel, Valentina Ercoli, Elisa Palamara, Giuseppina Cinardi, Laura D'Aietti, Simon I. Hay, Marius Gilbert
PLOS ONE , 2014, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0096084
Abstract: Livestock contributes directly to the livelihoods and food security of almost a billion people and affects the diet and health of many more. With estimated standing populations of 1.43 billion cattle, 1.87 billion sheep and goats, 0.98 billion pigs, and 19.60 billion chickens, reliable and accessible information on the distribution and abundance of livestock is needed for a many reasons. These include analyses of the social and economic aspects of the livestock sector; the environmental impacts of livestock such as the production and management of waste, greenhouse gas emissions and livestock-related land-use change; and large-scale public health and epidemiological investigations. The Gridded Livestock of the World (GLW) database, produced in 2007, provided modelled livestock densities of the world, adjusted to match official (FAOSTAT) national estimates for the reference year 2005, at a spatial resolution of 3 minutes of arc (about 5×5 km at the equator). Recent methodological improvements have significantly enhanced these distributions: more up-to date and detailed sub-national livestock statistics have been collected; a new, higher resolution set of predictor variables is used; and the analytical procedure has been revised and extended to include a more systematic assessment of model accuracy and the representation of uncertainties associated with the predictions. This paper describes the current approach in detail and presents new global distribution maps at 1 km resolution for cattle, pigs and chickens, and a partial distribution map for ducks. These digital layers are made publically available via the Livestock Geo-Wiki (http://www.livestock.geo-wiki.org), as will be the maps of other livestock types as they are produced.
Re-Shoring and Resilience in Italy during and after the Crisis  [PDF]
Talamo Giuseppina, Sabatino Michele
American Journal of Industrial and Business Management (AJIBM) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ajibm.2018.85081
Abstract: Since 1990s, companies have started to shift their productions to the low-cost countries and this strategy is commonly known as offshoring. However, over the past years, the evidence shows that offshoring strategies may not continue to be beneficial for the organization’s companies activities. Consequently during the recent years, companies have begun to pay more attention to unquantifiable factors, such as the supply chain issue and strategy factors rather than simply relying on and the lowest price that in turn can mean the highest risk and high total cost. Having considered the discrepancy between the initially estimates cost of offshoring and those of actually occurred, companies are coming back through re-shoring strategies. In this paper, an overview of the main literature has been conducted to provide a better understanding of the term re-shoring. In the first section, various definitions and explanation of the concept of re-shoring will be presented. After that, the main motivations behind the re-shoring are discussed. The second part relies on the concept of resilience. We analyze resilience as a resource and response to the recent economic and financial crisis. In particular, this paper analyzes the role of economic resilience of the territories belonging to companies that have adopted offshoring strategies in the past and whether this has contributed to repatriation phenomena. In this regard, with the aid of recent data, we intend to understand the behavior of companies that have carried out re-shoring actions and their links with the economic resilience of the Italian regions. We also present whether there is a relationship at regional level between companies that have made re-shoring choices and the degree of economic resilience of a regional area. Finally, the critical considerations will be presented.
Scientific Research in Homeopathic Medicine: Validation, Methodology and Perspectives
Giuseppina Pitari
Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine , 2007, DOI: 10.1093/ecam/nel085
Abstract: Verona's School of Homeopathic Medicine (www.omeopatia.org) organized a day of full immersion in the field of homeopathy, focusing on the validity of this much-debated discipline. There is widespread consensus in the medical community that evidence-based medicine is the best standard for assessing efficacy and safety of healthcare practices, and systematic reviews with strict protocols are essential to establish proof for various therapies. Students, homeopathic practitioners, academic and business representatives, who are interested in or curious about homeopathic practices attended the conference.
On a Class of Forward-Backward Stochastic Differential Systems in Infinite Dimensions
Giuseppina Guatteri
International Journal of Stochastic Analysis , 2007, DOI: 10.1155/2007/42640
Abstract: We prove that a class of fully coupled forward-backward systems in infinite dimensions has a local unique solution. After studying the regularity property of the solution, we prove that for a peculiar class of systems arising in the theory of stochastic optimal control, the solution exists in arbitrary large time interval. Finally, we investigate the connection between the solution to the systems and a stochastic optimal control problem.
Estudio perceptivo del habla de los habitantes de la ciudad de Guanare, estado Portuguesa
Nicotra,Giuseppina;
Opción , 2008,
Abstract: the individual interacts in society and it develops demonstrating its ample creativity in relation to the means that surround it. in this sense, the vocabulary and the pronunciación constitute elements indispensable for our study. the objective of this investigation is to describe, through a perceptivo study, the speech of the inhabitants of the city of guanare, portuguese state. corpus of the work was constituted by 15 native informants of the city of guanare, both sexes and ages between 35 and 55 years. the samples used for this investigation were recordings located in different radio transmitters from the city of guanare. for the fonológico analysis modelo natural polisistémico was taken from professor godsuno chela-flores (1994:19) which ?allows to analyze the linguistic complexity in its diverse facets?. the made perceptivo analysis to these samples allowed to make reference to the accomplishments of the phonemes /s/, /r/, /l/, /d/ and /k/ post on guard nuclear, confirming the polisistémica theory of chela-flower of minimum consonants in this position. according to the perceptivos criteria of the east speech type of study reflected a process from the descendent perspective (top-down), where the expert reacts on the basis of the knowledge of the language.
Diabetes melito: plantas e princípios ativos naturais hipoglicemiantes
Negri, Giuseppina;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Farmacêuticas , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-93322005000200002
Abstract: diabetes mellitus comprises a group of ethiologically and clinically heterogeneous disorders with a common set of symptoms: excessive thirst and hunger, muscular weakness, weight loss, excessive urination and elevation of the blood glucose level among others. there has been a striking emergence of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus as a major health problem in populations undergoing modernization of life-style, both in developed and underdeveloped nations. many species of plants have been used ethnopharmacologically or experimentally to treat symptons of diabetes mellitus. the high percentage of active plants probably reflects, at least in part, the great variety of possible active constituents and mechanisms of action. the wide diversity of chemical classes indicate a variety of mechanisms must be involved in the lowering of the blood glucose level. some of these compounds may have therapeutic potential, while others may produce hypoglycemia as a side-effect of their toxicity, specially hepatotoxicity. the present article is an actualized review of hypoglicemic medicinal plants and their active constituents.

Giuseppina Marigo
Altre Modernità , 2011,
Abstract: The article examines two plays, in them the Israeli dramatist anok Levin deals with biblical subjects. The first is the sketch “The Binding of Isaac”, that was performed in 1970, inside the satyrical cabaret “The Queen of the Bathroom”. The second is “Job’s Sorrows”, one of the most important of Levin’s ‘mythological dramas’, that was performed in 1981, under the production of the autor himself. Through the sketch - and the song that completes it - Levin criticizes the Israelis euforia after the Six Days war, while in the drama he starts from “Job’s Book” to ask fundamental questions about human life, such as the significance of sorrow and ‘what is the human being’. In Levin’s drama Job’s figure blends into Christ’s figure, and in this way the dramatist deals also with the proposal of christian Redemption, which he refuses too. In the last part of the play, the focus moves to the relation between pleasure and sorrow, and to the spectacularisation of both in the ‘show’s society’: the crucifized Job becomes the principal attraction of a circus and his agony moans get confused with the pleasure moans of a striptease. In this part Levin asks also the metatheatrical question about what one has to expect from the performance. Is clear answer is that there is nothing behind the performance, so as nothing is behind the sorrow, but the strenght with these questions return in his tragical dramas disclose that such problems were for him both a worry and a source of poetry.
