Supercritical Fluid Adsorption of Domperidone on Silica Aerogel  [PDF]

Silica aerogel (SA) was loaded with domperidone to demonstrate the potentiality of adsorption processes based on the usage of supercritical carbon dioxide to treat poorly water-soluble drugs, forming new kinds of drug delivery systems. The effects of pressure, temperature and solution concentration on loaded SA were studied. Adsorption isotherms were measured at 35and 45 and fitted with Langmuir model. Release kinetics of the adsorbed drug were also evaluated by in vitro dissolution tests. Results showed that domperidone can be uniformly dispersed into the aerogel and that the release rate of domperidone from the composite, constituted by drug and silica aerogel, is much faster than that of the crystalline drug. The proposed adsorption method is suitable for the production of domperidone fast release tablets.

Abstract: It is intended to confute the opinion of a Platonic Archimedes, through the study of the fundamental theses of his Sandreckoner (Psammites) and of its particular logical-linguistic aspects, but especially of an Aristotelic Archimedes, as Delsedine (1970) maintains in his article “L’infini numérique dans l’Arénaire d’Archimède”. He writes: The Sandreckonerrépond à la nécessitè d’adapter la notation numérique à l’idée de l’infinité potentielle de l’ensamble des nombres naturales”1. First, it is focused on the general aspects of the work, which highlight its Enlightenment and Py-thagorean—Democritean character, then it is passed to the analysis of its particular linguistic and logical aspects and of its fundamental theses, translated into symbolic form, in which it is still giving prominence to its Pythagorean-Democritean or Italic character (Boscarino, 1999, 2010, 2011, 2012).

Abstract: It is argued that even with some new readings made by the publication of the Letter to Eratosthenes in the Archimedes Palimpsest, with the wonderful discovery of his so-called “mechanical method” (a certain way of theorizing in mathematical things by means of mechanical entities) at the beginning of the twentieth century, some important historical-philological and philosophicalepistemological issues still remain, which have already discussed in part in my writings. We produce some important testimonies taken from Metrikon by Heron of Alexandria in favour of our translations and interpretations of Archimedes’ lexicon, not without placing under investigation at the same time the personality and the importance of Hero in the history of philosophical, scientific and technological Greek-Hellenistic thought in line with Archimedes and the tradition of Italic thought of science (The quotations of the Greek texts of Archimedes, Heron and Pappus are my translations).
The Role of Hyperinsulenemia as a Risk Factor for Pancreatic Cancer  [PDF]

Background: Pancreatic cancer is associated with a very severe prognosis and identification of risk factors is essential. Diabetes and obesity are both established risk factors, and they both cause hyperinsulenemia. With this review we wished to appraise the evidence of a role of high insulin levels in causing pancreatic cancer. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Medline, and all evidence on potential pathophysiology of hyperinsulenemia and pancreatic cancer was included. Metaand pooled-analysis on epidemiological evidence are reported, and individual studies were as appropriate for specific topics (role of therapies, central adiposity and role of physical exercise). Conclusion: Hyperinsulenemia, and possibly hyperestrogenism secondary to a metabolic syndrome, are important elements in the pathogenesis of pancreatic cancer. Modification of certain life-style factors (exercise and weight loss) appears to modify the risk of pancreatic malignancy.

Abstract: In the framework of the so called Open Quantum Relativity, we investigate a quantum universe, starting from a minimal set of variables defining the given quantum state. Entanglement between quantum states is the way to link different regions of the universe, even if (apparently) causally disconnected. As a consequence, the concept of causality results recovered and enlarged. Besides, the observed CDM model emerges from this picture, giving the possibility to realize a statistical and quantum interpretation of the cosmological constant. In particular, the novelty consists in the fact that the presently observed universe could be the result of several entanglement phenomena giving rise to a certain amount of entropy directly related to the value of cosmological constant.

Abstract: The present contribution moves from the theory of social representations (Moscovici, 1961) and focuses attention on the importance of social communication within negotiation processes of shared meanings. Actually, discursive psychology (Potter, & Wetherell, 1987; Billig, 1991) has showed that social representation have a narrative nature since they organize the cognitive schemata that people use to give sense to the world (Lazlo, 1997). In such a frame a crucial role is played by mass media, which do contribute to construct and convey the figurative nucleus of each representation (Mininni, 2004). By adopting this discursive perspective, the present contribution aims at investigating the social debate about assisted fecundation which in Italy has accompanied the campaign for the abrogation of Law 40. The corpus of data is made up of a sample of 46 media-texts collected within the weeks before the referendum. The data have been investigated by adopting diatextual analysis (Mininni, 1992; 2003; 2005).

Abstract: In organic materials absorption of light results in creation of the Frenkel excitons, Coulomb -bound electron-hole pairs having an integer spin. Being composite bosons, Frenkel excitons may accumulate in significant quantities in a single quantum state. The probability of photon absorption by such a state increases as (N+1) where N is the occupation number of the state. This enhancement is due to the stimulated ab-sorption of light, which is a final-state stimu-lated process analogous to the well-known stimulated emission of light. We propose using the stimulated absorption for creation of solar cells of a record quantum efficiency. We are going to use the organic microspheres to ac-cumulate the Frenkel excitons at the discrete frequencies corresponding to the photonic whispering gallery modes of the sphere. The dissociation of accumulated Frenkel excitons will be effectuated periodically using the trans-parent carbon contacts on a piezoelectric mechnical support.

Abstract: Honey has been successfully used in medicine since antiquity. However, with the advent of modern medicine it has been less used, espe-cially in the English-speaking world. Its benefi-cial effects in different disorders, rediscovered in recent decades, will be discussed below on the basis of a series of international scientific studies conducted to investigate the therapeutic properties of this natural product and published on Medline. It should be noted, however, that the therapeutic use of honey in everyday clinical practice needs to be validated by relevant guidelines and should only be adopted under medical prescription, in accordance with criteria of efficacy and safety for both patients and healthcare providers.
Coupled Effects of Energy Dissipation and TravellingVelocity in the Run-Out Simulation of High-SpeedGranular  [PDF]

Abstract: The run-out of high speed granular masses or avalanches along mountain streams, till their arrest, is analytically modeled. The power balance of a sliding granular mass along two planar sliding surfaces is written by taking into account the mass volume, the slopes of the surfaces, the fluid pressure and the energy dissipation. Dissipation is due to collisions and displacements, both localized within a layer at the base of the mass. The run-out, the transition from the first to the second sliding surface and the final run-up of the mass are described by Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs), solved in closed form (particular cases) or by means of numerical procedures (general case). The proposed solutions allow to predict the run-up length and the speed evolution of the sliding mass as a function of the involved geometrical, physical and mechanical parameters as well as of the simplified rheological laws assumed to express the energy dissipation effects. The corresponding solutions obtained according to the Mohr-Coulomb or Voellmy resistance laws onto the sliding surfaces are recovered as particular cases. The run-out length of a documented case is finally back analysed through the proposed model.
