Abstract: Immunohistochemical evaluation was performed using antibodies against cell cycle related proteins ER, PR, p53, p21, p63, and Ki-67 in hyperplasia of usual type (HUT) in specimens of aesthetic reduction mammaplasty (ARM), in specimens of mammaplasty contralateral to breast cancer (MCC), and in specimens of invasive mammary carcinomas (IMC) presenting HUT in the adjacent parenchyma. The results showed that the immunoexpression of ER, PR, p21, p53, p63, and KI-67 was similar in HUT from the three different groups. The p63 expression in myoepithelial cells showed discontinuous pattern in the majority of HUT, different from continuous expression in normal lobules. Nuclear expression of p53 and p21 was frequently higher expressed in IMC and very rare in HUT. We also found cytoplasmic expression of p21 in benign hyperplastic lesions and in neoplastic cells of IMC.Our data failed to demonstrate different expression of cell cycle related proteins in HUT from patients with and without breast cancer. However, we found discontinuous expression of p63 in myoepithelial cells around HUT adjacent to carcinomas and cytoplasmic expression of p21 in epithelial cells of hyperplastic foci. Further studies are needed to determine how these subgroups relate to molecular abnormalities and cancer risk. The hypothetical multistep model of carcinogenesis indicates that breast cancer develops via a series of intermediate hyperplastic lesions through in situ to invasive carcinomas, with the risk of developing carcinoma increasing at each stage [1-3]. Epidemiological studies demonstrated an increased risk of developing breast cancer associated with proliferative breast lesions. Hyperplasia of usual type (HUT) is a common proliferative lesion associated with a slightly elevated risk for subsequent development of breast cancer (relative risk = 1.6, augmented to 2.1 with positive family history) [1,2,4]. HUT is not necessarily a direct precursor of invasive breast carcinoma but may identify individu
Lymph vascular invasion in invasive mammary carcinomas identified by the endothelial lymphatic marker D2-40 is associated with other indicators of poor prognosis

BMC Cancer , 2008, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2407-8-64
Abstract: We selected 123 cases of invasive mammary carcinomas stratified into three subgroups according to axillary lymph node status: macrometastases, micrometastases, and lymph node negative. Lymphatic (LVI) and blood (BVI) vessel invasion were evaluated by H&E and immunohistochemistry using the D2-40 and CD31 antibodies, and related to histologic tumor type and grade, estrogen and progesterone receptors, E-cadherin, Ki67, p53, and Her2/neu expression.LVI was detected in H&E-stained sections in 17/123 cases (13.8%), and in D2-40 sections in 35/123 cases (28.5%) (Kappa = 0.433). BVI was detected in H&E-stained sections in 5/123 cases (4.1%), and in CD31 stained sections in 19/123 cases (15.4%) (Kappa = 0.198). LVI is positively related to higher histologic grade (p = 0.013), higher Ki67 expression (p = 0.00013), and to the presence of macrometastases (p = 0.002), and inversely related to estrogen (p = 0.0016) and progesterone (p = 0.00017) receptors expression.D2-40 is a reliable marker of lymphatic vessels and is a useful tool for lymphatic emboli identification in immunostained sections of breast carcinomas with higher identification rates than H&E. Lymphatic vessel invasion was related to other features (high combined histologic grade, high Ki67 score, negative hormone receptors expression) associated with worse prognosis, probable reflecting a potential for lymphatic metastatic spread and aggressive behavior.Lymphatic vessels are considered the main route by which tumor cells reach axillary lymph nodes [1-3]. Lymphatic vessel invasion (LVI) is known as an independent predictor of lymph node metastases in breast cancer. The diagnosis of LVI is made based on the presence of tumor emboli within vascular channels lined by a single layer of endothelial cells without red blood cells. Lymphatic vessels are flattened channels or open spaces lined by a single layer of endothelial cells whose lumen are sometimes filled with lymphocytes. However, the identification of LVI is diffi

Abstract: O bacupari, Salacia crassifolia (Mart.) The bacupari (Salacia crassifolia ) is a native fruit plant of the Brazilian cerrado areas. Although a high fruit fly infestation limits its utilization, it is eaten by animals and humans. Fruits present orange colored pulp, with slightly acid flavour and can be apreciated in natura or juices. The objective of this study was to assay bacupari plant features in Goiás State cerrado and to verify insects associated to bacupari, to determine infestation index and to verify this plant as a natural reservoir of fruit flies for adjacent orchards. Samples were collected during the frutification stage from September to December from 1995 to 1999 on 11 counties in Goiás State. The insects found more often were from Tephritidae (54.22%) as Anastrepha sp. (new species), A. zenildae, A. obliqua, A. fraterculus, A. sororcula, A. serpentina. Insects from other families were also identified: Lonchaei

Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-91992011000300015
Abstract: uninfected dogs (n = 10) and those naturally infected with leishmaniasis (n = 10) were subjected to several diagnostic tests, namely: hemoculture, polymerase chain reaction (pcr) of hemoculture, indirect immunofluorescence (rifi), cytological examination of lymph node aspirate, culture of lymph node aspirate and pcr of lymph node aspirate. rifi - followed by pcr of lymph node aspirate culture - presented more positive results in infected dogs than in uninfected ones. in infected animals, rifi was more effective than pcr of lymph node aspirate culture. there was no statistical difference in positivity between rifi and hemoculture; lymph node aspirate culture/cytological examination of lymph node aspirate and pcr of hemoculture; and between pcr of lymph node aspirate culture and pcr of hemoculture. all infected and uninfected animals had positive and negative results in at least one test. in conclusion, the association of several tests improves the efficacy of canine visceral leishmaniasis diagnosis.

Brazilian Journal of Biology , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-69842009000400028
Abstract: this work aims to assess the potential of the green seaweed ulva fasciata delile as an alternative source of dietary fibre (df). total df content was determined, some of its physico-chemical properties described and the physiological effects of u. fasciata meal on rats fed a hypercholesterolemic diet were investigated. u. fasciata may be considered a potential alternative source of df with a total content of about 400 g.kg-1 (dry basis) and interesting physico-chemical properties: water retention capacity of 8.74 g/water.g-1 dry sample (seaweed meal) and 0.90 (seaweed carbohydrate extract), lipid adsorption capacity of 4.52 g/oil.g-1 dry sample (seaweed meal) and 5.70 (seaweed carbohydrate extract), intrinsic viscosity of 2.4 dl.g-1 (seaweed carbohydrate extract) and cation exchange capacity of 3.51 eq.kg-1 (seaweed carbohydrate extract). the diet containing seaweed meal was able to keep rats' total cholesterol (tc) down without causing any undesirable increase in ldl-c fraction. no evidence of toxic and/or antinutritional components in the seaweed meal was detected. rats showed a fecal volume much greater (13 g) than that fed on cellulose diet ( 7 g) (p < 0.05). these properties confer on the seaweed the potential to be used in food technology for the acquisition of low-calorie food and might be important in body weight control, reduction of blood tc and ldl-c as well as in prevention of gastrointestinal diseases.

Abstract: although we may consider the guarani culture, seen in a general way, as a manifestation of a prescriptive society, analyses and interpretation of the ceramic vessels, made by the guarani potters in the past, show a strong attachment to well defined stylistic and technological rules. we understand that, actually, some aspects, as form and function, were critical for the vessels to be accept and this way granted their adequate use, either in daily activities or in rituals along time. on the other hand, however, it is possible to find some cases where there were some changes in the vessels which show the ceramists' competence and desire to innovate. our aim is to show, by observing examples of innovations in a collection of fragments and vessels found in an archaeological site by the banks of the pelotas river, on the borders of the states of rio grande do sul and santa catarina, by the end of the 1990's, when archaeologist were conducting a cultural resources survey and excavations in advance to a construction of a reservoir. the ceramics obtained in the site shows an authentic 'idea factory'. thus, we believe it to be possible to recover fundamental information for a fully comprehension of the guarani ceramics found in our archaeological research helping to understand what makes it unique and, at the sames time, so diverse.
