Dihydroflavonols from the leaves of Derris urucu (Leguminosae): structural elucidation and DPPH radical-scavenging activity

Abstract: derris urucu is an amazonian plant with insecticide and ichthyotoxic properties. studies with this species show the presence of flavonoids, mainly rotenoids, as well as stilbenes. the ethanol extract of the leaves of derris urucu (leguminosae) afforded three new dihydroflavonols named urucuol a (1), b (2) and c (3), and the dihydroflavonol isotirumalin (4). their structures were elucidated by extensive analysis of 1d and 2d nmr, uv and ir spectra and ms data and comparison with literature data. the isolated compounds (1-4) were evaluated for dpph? radical scavenging activity and showed a relatively lower antioxidant ability compared to the commercial antioxidant trans-resveratrol.

Abstract: the hexane extract of the bark of tectona grandis (verbenaceae) afforded two anthraquinones and two naphtoquinones. their caracterizations were obtained through nmr spectroscopic techniques. this is the first phytochemical study of the bark of tectona grandis reforestation specimen in brazil. the main interest in this work is proving the presence of tectoquinone in reforestation specimen.

Abstract: the amazon biodiversity may provide plants whose chemical substances are capable of controlling weeds. in this study we report the isolation and identification of five stilbenes from the leaves of "timbó vermelho" (deguelia rufescens var. urucu): 4-methoxylonchocarpene (1); 3,5-dimethoxy-4′-hydroxy-3′-prenyl-trans-stilbene (2), lonchocarpene (3), 3,5-dimethoxy-4′-o-prenyl-trans-stilbene (4) and pterostilbene (5). compounds 2 and 4 are new natural products although 2 has been previously cited as synthesis product. potential allelopathic activity for 1, 2 and 4 was evaluated over seed germination and plant growth of mimosa pudica weed. the observed effects on seed germination did not vary significantly (p > 0.05) when the analysis of phytotoxicity was performed with the substances alone, the maximum inhibition did not exceed 20%. the most intense inhibitions on radicle and hypocotyl development were found for compound 4 (p < 0.05). when tested in pairs, showed antagonism for seed germination and synergism for radicle and hypocotyl development.

Abstract: the synthesis of onion (allium cepa) hybrids relies upon the use of two genetic-cytoplasmic male-sterility systems, cms-s and cms-t, in association to the normal male-fertile (n) cytoplasm. however, the molecular phenotyping of male-sterility-inducing and normal cytoplasms of many onion accessions adapted for cultivation under tropical conditions is not available. some of these accessions were reported as presenting tolerance to diseases and adaptation to tropical and subtropical regions. therefore, these accessions are potential sources of parental lines for the brazilian onion hybrid breeding programs. in the present work, polymerase chain reaction (pcr) assays were conducted using mitochondria-derived markers in order to characterize the cytoplasm type present in different morpho-agronomic onion types cultivated in brazil. the s cytoplasm appeared to be the most frequent one among the 66 evaluated accessions with a frequency of 56%. the t male-sterility-inducing cytoplasm was observed in 25.8% of the accessions. of the samples, 18.2% displayed exclusively the cytoplasm n. this information could be useful to guide the onion breeding programs in the selection of parental lines aiming to develop hybrid cultivars adapted to tropical and subtropical areas of the world.
Biflavones and triterpenoids isolated from Ouratea castaneifolia (DC.) Engl., Ochnaceae

Abstract: this paper presents the chemical investigation of the leaves and stems of ouratea castaneifolia (dc.) engl.. there are no chemical or pharmacological studies with this species. classic phytochemical investigation of the organic extracts together with high pressure liquid chromatography (hplc) procedures lead to the identification of seventeen metabolites: seven triterpenes (friedelin, 3β-friedelinol, α-amyrin, β-amyrin, lupeol, germanicol and taraxerol), four steroids (sitosterol, stigmasterol and the glycosides sitosteryl 3-o-β-d-glucopyranoside and stigmasteryl 3-o-β-d-glucopyranoside), one isoflavone (5,7,4'-trimethoxyisoflavone), one flavone (5,4'-dihydroxy-7,3',5'-trimethoxyflavone) and four biflavones (amenthoflavone, 7,7"-o-dimethylamenthoflavone, heveaflavone and tetramethylamenthoflavone). the structures of the compounds were established by the analysis of 1h, 13c nmr spectra including bidimensional techniques. the classes of the identified metabolites are in agreement with previous studies of the ouratea genus.
Volatiles, A Glutarimide Alkaloid and Antimicrobial Effects of Croton pullei (Euphorbiaceae)

Abstract: Chemical investigation of Croton pullei (Euphorbiaceae) collected in the Brazilian Amazon region was revisited. The chemical composition of the essential oils of leaves and stems was analyzed by GC/MS. It was found that both the oils comprise mainly terpenes, among which linalool was the major one (24.90 and 39.72%, respectively). Phytochemical investigation of the stem methanol extract led to the isolation of a new natural product from the glutarimide alkaloid group named N-[2,6-dioxo-1-(2-phenylethyl)-3-piperidinyl]-acetamide, confirming that C. pullei is a rich source of this class of alkaloids. The hexane and methanol extracts of the stems of C. pullei showed moderate antibacterial and antifungal activity and the highest inhibition was observed when the methanol extract was tested against Staphylococcus aureus CCMB 262 and CCMB 263.

Abstract: Ferulic acid (FA) and its derivatives (FADs) are known for a variety of biological activities, such as photo-protective agent, antioxidant, antiatherogenic and antiplasmodial activities. During structural definition of a FAD isolated from Croton pullei, the possibility of a heterologous series made this definition difficult. In this regard, computational simulations were performed using theoretical calculations at DFT level to predict Infrared (IR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) data. The IR and NMR 13C and 1H data were compared with the theoretical calculations performed for three structural possibilities of a heterologous series. The theoretical results were compared with the experimental data through linear regression in order to define the most probable structure and showed satisfactory values.

Abstract: the fungus aspergillus flavus isolated as endophytic of the plant paspalum maritimum trin. was evaluated for its potential application in biotransformation reactions. the compounds chalcone (1), 3,4,5-trimethoxychalcone (2) and 2,3,4,4'-tetramethoxychalcone (3) were biotransformed, respectively, in dihydrochalcone (4), 3,4,5-trimethoxydihydrochalcone (5) and 2,3,4,4'-tetramethoxydihydrochalcone (6). the structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including 1d and 2d nmr techniques, and ms analysis. the dihydrochalcones 5 and 6 are new compounds.

Abstract: a new anthraquinone derivative, named guepinone (1), along with the known substances isosulochrin (2) and chloroisosulochrin (3), were isolated from a rice culture of pestalotiopsis guepinii, an endophytic fungus of virola michelii. the compounds were identified by analysis of 1d and 2d nmr and ms spectral data. the antimicrobial activity of these compounds was evaluated and chloroisosulchrin (3) was the most active.
EVOLUCIóN CLíNICA DE PACIENTES CON INFARTO AGUDO DE MIOCARDIO TRATADOS CON ANGIOPLASTIA PRIMARIA / Clinical evolution of patients with acute myocardial infarction treated with primary angioplasty

Abstract: ResumenIntroducción y objetivos: La angioplastia primaria restablece de manera rápida y mantenida la permeabilidad de la arteria coronaria responsable del infarto agudo de miocardio, disminuye significativamente la mortalidad, y mejora el pronóstico y la calidad de vida a largo plazo. El objetivo fue describir la evolución clínica de los pacientes con infarto agudo de miocardio tratados con angioplastia primaria. Método: Estudio descriptivo, longitudinal y prospectivo con 69 pacientes, recepcionados de 8:00 am a 4:00 pm, tratados con angioplastia primaria en el Instituto de Cardiología y Cirugía Cardiovascular, desde el 1 de julio de 2007 hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2008. Se realizó seguimiento clínico durante 180 días, donde se evaluó la frecuencia de sucesos clínicos mayores: muerte, reinfarto, angina postinfarto e inestable, necesidad de nueva revascularización y hemorragia mayor. Resultados: El tabaquismo y la hipertensión arterial tuvieron una prevalencia elevada. La localización inferior del infarto y la enfermedad de un vaso fueron las más frecuentes. Prevaleció el resultado inmediato exitoso. Los casos fallidos se relacionaron, con la coronaria derecha, el flujo TIMI 0 - 1 y el tiempo de evolución mayor de seis horas. Los sucesos clínicos mayores en el seguimiento fueron escasos y más frecuentes durante los primeros 30 días de seguimiento. Conclusiones: La angioplastia primaria realizada durante las primeras seis horas después del comienzo de los síntomas, es un procedimiento eficaz para tratar el infarto agudo de miocardio, debido al predominio del resultado exitoso y la escasa frecuencia de sucesos clínicos mayores durante seis meses de seguimiento clínico. / AbstractIntroduction and Objectives: Primary coronary angioplasty reestablishes fast and sustained way the permeability of acute myocardial infarction related artery. It decreases the mortality, improves the prognosis and quality of life to long-term. The objective was to describe patients' clinical evolution with acute myocardial infarction treated by primary coronary angioplasty. Method: A descriptive, longitudinal and prospective study was performed in 69 patients, who were admitted to the Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery Institute, from July 1, 2007 to December 31, 2008, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. All patients underwent primary coronary angioplasty. A clinical evolution was made during 180 days, where frequency of major clinic events were evaluated: death, re-AMI, angina post-AMI, unstable angina, need of new re-vascularization and major hemorrhage.
