Abstract: Non-atrophic active chronic gastritis (ACG) is characterized by the presence of H. pylori in the gastric epithelium, known to be one of the first steps that precede progression to gastric adenocarcinoma. Inactive chronic gastritis (ICG) suggests that the patient has H. pylori gastritis, but this diagnosis is rarely made in routine histopathology. Clinical manifestations associated with H. pylori infection are potentially due to differences in virulence between strains; however, it is unclear if the progression of ACG to ICG depends on the H. pylori strain. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of the virulence factors of H. pylori found in patients with ACG and ICG, and its influence on the development of ICG. A significant association was observed between H. pylori detection by histological examination and the activity of gastritis (p < 0.01). Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) (>1 year) was reported by 28.6% of the ACG group and 42.5% of the ICG, while no evidence of association between long-term use of PPI and decreased inflammation was found in the patients studied. The genes cagA, cagE and virB11 were statistically associated with ACG (p = 0.01, p < 0.001 and p = 0.002, respectively). In the vacAs1 allele groups, ACG was associated with the most virulent group (p = 0.0015), while ICG was associated with the less virulent group (p < 0.001). The rate of co-infection was significantly higher in ICG than in ACG cases (p = 0.02). In conclusion, this study points to the role of virulent strains of H. pylori in the non-resolution of gastritis.
Jogo e brinquedo: reflex?es a partir da teoria crítica
Volpato, Gildo;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302002008100011
Abstract: this bibliographical review, aimed at contributing to the thought on the role of games and toys in education, sees in the authors of the critical theory its main interlocutors. it brings forward part of the history of some toys and of the relationships among games, parties and rituals. it thus discusses the changes in the concepts, uses and meanings of games and toys and relates them to the increasing process of rationalization that has affected the western world, these last centuries. finally, it criticizes the mimesis found in the sacred rites and suggests its inclusion into the process of becoming aware of the present days phenomena.

Analysis of the Low-Energy Seismic Activity in the Southern Apulia (Italy)  [PDF]

Open Journal of Earthquake Research (OJER) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojer.2013.24010

In this paper we analysed the historical and instrumental seismicity of the seismic district “Penisola Salentina” (Salento peninsula) in the southern part of the Apuliaregion, making use of the most recent seismological database. Relocation of available dataset points out that the events are spatially distributed over a belt of deformation that approximately corresponds to Soglia Messapica (Taranto-Brindisi depression). Besides, computed source characteristics indicate dextral strike-slip solutions with an approximately E-W orientation that seismologically confirm previous geodynamic studies indicating a NE-SW extension in the Taranto-Brindisi depression. In particular, the tensional stress associated to the present seismic activity could be the consequence of the relaxation of the buckling process following the extensional re-arrangement of the Apenninic belt masses. Moreover attenuation QPvalues obtained in this study are much greater than those inferred in other parts of Italian peninsula; this result agrees with previous macroseismic investigations and indicates a greater efficiency of the studied area in the transmission of body waves.

Teaching Practice Representations in Higher Education from the Perspective of Students: Contributions for Professor Training  [PDF]

Creative Education (CE) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2016.715224
Abstract: This article discusses the representations of higher education teaching practice according to the students’ perspective. The sample comprised 393 students and 14 professors of three universities of Santa Catarina State in Brazil that traditionally conferred degrees upon professionals of Law, Civil Engineering and Medicine. Among the theorists brought into the discussion, we can mention Berstein (1990), Bourdieu (1983, 1990), Chauí (2001), and Tardif (2002). Then we present the obtained results by mapping the students’ parameters and value judgments of their positive assessment of professors and teaching practice in order to contribute to future discussion in terms of professors’ training.
The City as an Object of Research: Microsociology of Urban Spaces in Brazil  [PDF]
Irlys Barreira, Geísa Mattos
Current Urban Studies (CUS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/cus.2014.22013

Sociological and anthropological productions that take the city as their object of investigation have met new approaches in Brazil, especially since the 1990s. This paper aims to discuss the recent theoretical and empirical trajectories of research proposals as their authors take the city to the spotlight. This scientific endeavor analyzes a corpus of theses and dissertations produced by students of the Sociology Graduation Program of the Federal University of Ceará, in Brazil, as such works encompass shifts and trends in predominant theories and methods of the Social Sciences in Brazil over the past two decades. They demonstrate an increasing interest for the microsociological look towards the urban, which we argue to be an effect of the influence of Anthropology in the theoretical and methodological approach of research objects. From the set of selected works, the city is composed by territories cross-cut by a strong dimension of power and conflict, as an influence of Political Geography. French Sociology and Historiography contribute with theoretical perspectives that prioritize the senses of creation and insubordination, thus attributing to the practice of diverse social actors in urban places. In the set of works, the neighborhood unfolds as a microcosm of social practices, embedded with multiple senses of belonging and spatial conflicts, which are expressive of a wider social struggle.

Produ??o de metabólitos no armazenamento de uvas 'Isabel' (Vitis lasbrusca L.) e sua rela??o com temperatura e vácuo

Ciência Rural , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84782000000400025
Abstract: in this research, the physiological transformations of 'isabella' (vitis labrusca l) grapes aí different storage conditions were examined. the grapes were stored at 25°c (nonchilled) and 4°c (chilled) crnd maintained m a desiccator with vacuum (-60kpa) appiicatíon at lhe beginning of the storage process and without vacuum appiicatíon. the metabolites produced were quantitativety determined by gas-liquid chromatography and statistically analysed using a completely randomized design with two repetitions. the chilling storage reduced the production of both ethanol and methanol. the ethyl acetato formation did not depena on the individual effects of vacuum and temperature but is affected by the interaction ofthese two factors. the ethanol production was increased by vacuum at room temperature and by the interaction temperature-vacuum. the chilling storage diminished the amount of damaged berries and the vacuum had an opposite effect. the results obtained with the cultivar isabella suggest that the procedure of appiying vacuum at the beginning ofthe grape storage process may induce physical damage even ai chilling storage. the correlation studies show that the deterioration of stored isabella table grapes can be readily monitored byfollowing the methanol, ethanol and ethanal production.

Abstract: the teaching of drawing in brazilian schools has become less common in modern times. the rote memorizing of sequences or algorithms to solve geometrical problems has suppressed its cultural function. drawing has moved away from the primary and intermediate levels. however, research on the functioning of brain allows us to evaluate the importance of graphic expression for its development. this allows to conclude that re-introduction of drawing for schools must be made in new model capable of stimulating mental abilities, use manual dexterity, artistic sensitivity and graphic expression to help develop intuitive intelligence, but without forgetting rational, sequential, logical thinking. this work shows some exercises to advance this objective, as an initial stage to change the educational system in an effort to integrate psychology, pedagogy and neurosciences with drawing.
