A Methodology to Develop the Integration of the Environmental Management System with Other Standardized Management Systems  [PDF]

Abstract: Traditionally the global management system of an organization is frequently split into a number of individual management systems that are defined and implemented according to specific management systems standards (MSSs) as well as managed independently. The individual implementation of MSSs is an option that leads to several inefficiencies and sub-optimization of the global management system of an organization. As referred by ISO [1] the interested parties’ requirements increase. A more effective and efficient option for an organization is to integrate, into an integrated management system (IMS), the implementation and management of requirements of multiple MSSs. Certain difficulties are associated to the structuring process, implementation, verification, evaluation, improvement and progressive development of an IMS in the organizations. Several scholars have proposed various theoretical approaches regarding the integration of individual management systems (MSs) leading to the conclusion that there is not a common practice for all organizations as they encompass different characteristics. This paper aims to present and justify a designed methodology to be used by organizations to support the integration of various MSs. Among them are highlighted: the Environmental Management System (EMS) according ISO 14001 [2], the Quality Management System (QMS) according ISO 9001 [3], and the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OH & SMS) according OHSAS 18001 [4]. The methodology was designed in the context of a Portuguese company, on sequence of an organizational diagnosis and a research that was performed through a questionnaire. The strategy and the research methods took into consideration the case study.

Abstract: this text describes the results of a synthesis study developed during the period between 2004 and 2008, based on 13 academic and professional master dissertations, with the objective of discussing the virtual classroom. more precisely, the text aims at outlining the paradigm crisis around the rupture between the presence classroom and the virtual classroom, in view of the emergence of the information society, through empirical data gathered by the 13 master students that took part in this longitudinal study sponsored by cnpq, fapdf, and fenadesp. in its first part, there is a general introduction to the theme and to the research problem that gave origin to the meta-analytic or synthesis study described here, which is defined by four questions: 1) what are the new formats for the virtual classroom?; 2) what pedagogical strategies are more adequate to guide the teaching work in the virtual classroom?; 3) what innovative didactic materials are consistent with the teaching work in the virtual classroom?; 4) what new teacher roles emerge in the context of the virtual classroom? there follows a succinct description of the methodological approach adopted to give support to our investigation effort in search of answers to the questions posed above. the third part of the article consists of an equally brief theoretical picture of the concept of virtual classroom. the next section brings a discussion of each of those issues in the light of the results achieved in the 13 master dissertations analyzed. lastly, conclusions are put forward, which point out and discuss some of the defining elements of the virtual classroom that give shape to the paradigm crisis alluded to here.

Abstract: the purpose of this investigation is to clarify the modes of use of the internet in basic education settings at state and private schools of the federal district. the research made a qualitative reading of the quantitative data obtained from questionnaires, interviews and direct observations. twenty teachers were studied to reveal the way in which the contents made available through the internet are being apprehended and used in the classroom, the kind of navigation of hypertexts that are being suggested to students, and a typology of the modalities of use of the internet in education. data indicate that there are four modes of navigation: random and linear; oriented and problematized; via the pedagogy of projects; through the hypertext creation approach. data also point out that teachers are able to move forward to a more interesting use of the internet as a means of teaching and learning, and that the school - with its rhythm and rites - constitutes a significant hindrance. surely, there is widespread call for change. if students feel unease about the form and hermetic way in which educational practices have been conducted, which in actuality reveals itself as a systematic lack of interest in school, the same seems to happen to teachers, above all when they are asked by managers, parents, students and education theorists to adopt teaching attitudes they have not been prepared for.

Abstract: Esta investiga o objetiva o esclarecimento de modalidades de uso da internet em situa es de ensino fundamental, em escolas das redes pública e particular do Distrito Federal. Trata-se de uma pesquisa que empregou leitura qualitativa de dados quantitativos em que, por meio de questionários, entrevistas e observa es diretas, abordamos a atua o de vinte professores para explicitar de que forma os conteúdos disponibilizados por meio da internet est o sendo apreendidos e trabalhados em sala de aula, o tipo de navega o nos hipertextos eletr nicos que tem sido proposto aos alunos e uma tipologia de modalidades de uso da internet na educa o. Os dados indicam que há quatro modalidades de navega o (aleatória e linear; orientada e problematizada; por meio de pedagogia de projetos e por meio de abordagens de constru o de hipertextos). Indicam também que os professores s o capazes de avan ar em uma utiliza o mais interessante da internet como meio de ensino e de aprendizagem e que a escola, com seu ritmo e ritos, constitui uma amarra importante. Sem dúvida, há um clamor geral pela mudan a. Se os alunos sentem-se pouco à vontade com a forma e o hermetismo com que as rela es educativas vêm sendo conduzidas, o que é traduzido na prática por um desinteresse sistemático pela escola, o mesmo parece acontecer com os professores, sobretudo quando eles s o cobrados por gestores, pais, alunos e teóricos da educa o para assumirem posturas docentes para as quais eles n o foram preparados.

Abstract: the focus of this article is to introduce the mediatic transposition concept referring to the results of a brazilian research project that sought to identify impacts of internet videoconferencing (web conferencing) use in education with an emphasis on the changing role of teachers brought on by this new technology. the ethnographic study identified how the teaching tasks changed when pupils and instructors interacted face to face, mediated by technology, using a synchronous communication tool in a hybrid mode of education. this new educational environment in cyberspace is the face-connected classroom. the research took as its starting point studies related to the didactic transposition (chevallard, 1985) and the research addressed changes in teaching practices that were identified and analyzed, specifically those that impacted on the role of instructors during the transition from conventional to face-connected classrooms characterizing mediatic transposition.
Crescimento físico em estatura de escolares de ascendência japonesa na cidade de S?o Paulo, Brasil

Abstract: this paper reports the results of a cross-sectional survey describing the growth in stature of a sample of school children of japanese ancestry (three or four grandparents born in japan) and of high socio-economic status living in s?o paulo, brazil. the sample comprises 124 individuals 7-10 years of age, of both sexes. the results show that the children present mean values of stature below the median values of the nchs curves ("national center for health statistics", u.s.a.). the values are similar to the medians of a sample of japanese children and below those of well-to-do brazilian children of non-japanese ancestry studied by the pnsn ("pesquisa nacional sobre saúde e nutri??o", brazil). the findings do not support the hypothesis of uniformity of growth potential in stature, casting doubts on the utilization of a single anthropometric reference in the assessment of nutritional status.
Secular trend in height in enlisted men and recruits from the Brazilian Navy born from 1970 to 1977

Abstract: this study presents data from a survey on height trends in brazilian navy enlisted men and recruits born from 1970 to 1977. the sample consisted of 52,574 enlisted men and 4,459 recruits ranging in age from 18.00 to 18.99 years. the statistical processing employed two-way analysis of variance procedure, simple linear regression comparing height and year of birth and multiple analysis controlling for schooling (regression coefficient) and the chi-square. the results show that enlisted men and recruits displayed height increments, characterizing a contemporary process of secular trend. such increments were also present in the country's various macro-regions. the results were compared to a recent investigation of a national scope - the national survey on health and nutrition (pnsn) - and both enlisted men and recruits displayed higher median height than that reported by the pnsn. level of schooling for individuals in the navy is high, far superior to that of the brazilian population as a whole. this set of data suggests that young men enlisting in the navy are on average of a higher socioeconomic status than the brazilian population in general, which limits possibilities for extrapolating the findings from this research.

The sample consisted of 52,574 enlisted men and 4,459 recruits ranging in age from 18.00 to 18.99 years.
