Open Journal of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases (OJEMD) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojemd.2016.61002
Abstract: Background: Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide epidemic. In 2002 there were 173 million diabetic adults worldwide, and these numbers are expected to reach up to 300 million people by 2030. Meanwhile, vitamin D deficiency has its worldwide prevalence directly influenced by factors as solar radiation, skin color, latitude and seasons, cultural habits of populations such as clothing and food, and these factors are important to explain the different prevalences of vitamin D deficiency in the world. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional cohort study was conducted with patients in the outpatient clinic of the Health Unit of the city of Mangueirinha, Paraná, Southern Brazil. Fifty-four type 2 diabetic patients were evaluated (38 women and 16 men), aged 55.8 ± 12.6 years. The following variables were evaluated: age, ethnicity, presence of type 2 diabetes (DM2), hypertension, dyslipidemia, weight, BMI, WC, blood pressure, blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, ionized calcium, PTH, 25-OH Vit, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, urea, creatinine, uric acid and red cell/hematocrit. Results: mean BMI was 30.2 ± 4.4 kg/m2, indicating class 1 obesity in this population. Fasting glucose levels were approximately 169.8 ± 74.5 mg/dL. The 25-OH vitamin D values for this population were 23.4 ± 8.3 ng/mL, and 13% of them showed 25-OH vitamin D levels above 30 mg/dL. Fifty percent of those patients had vitamin D levels lower than 30 mg/dL, and 37% had less than 20 mg/dL. Conclusions: this study suggests that vitamin D is associated with low levels of vitamin D in type 2 diabetic patients. Supplementation of vitamin D should be considered in diabetic patients, when levels under 30 mg/mL are found.

Felzemburgh, Victor Araujo;Sampaio, Haroldo Araújo;Abreu Junior, Gilberto Ferreira de;Campos, José Humberto Oliveira;
Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-86502012000600013
Abstract: purpose: compare the new training model for vessel ligation with the traditional using rabbits in the assessment. methods: from 106 academics of the division of operative technique and experimental surgery, 36 were divided into two groups and offered them two training models of ligature. the group was invited to participate to an experimental procedure with rabbits and reproduce the technique trained. the procedure consisted of performing ligatures in saphenous veins of the legs of rabbits. the students were evaluated by objective criteria by an observer evaluator and answered a questionnaire at the end of the procedure. results: the medical students who have had training with the new model had a higher number of hits compared to the other group performing ligatures without clamping with hemostatic forceps (p<0.05). there was also a higher number of hits for the new model group to perform ligation temporary and permanent ligation with the use of forceps (p>0.05). the questionnaires indicated that the new model develops more ability to work in groups (p=0.088). conclusions: the project promotes the implementation of the new model for training ligature, indicating that the new model is better to the traditional surgical practice.

Cordeiro, Daltro Silva;Sarruge, José Renato;Haag, Henrique Paulo;Oliveira, Gilberto Diniz de;Silveira, Ronaldo Ivan;
Anais da Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz , 1979, DOI: 10.1590/S0071-12761979000100031
Abstract: this study was conducted with the objetives of determing the rate of macronutrient absorption considering the following items: . periods of greatest need for macronutrient nutrition; . amount of macronutrients accumulated in the different parts of the plant; . amount of macronutrients exported in seeds. a 33 factorial experiment with three replications was used in this study. the experimental area was located at piracicaba, sp, brazil. the soil belongs to the guamium series. iac-2, an indeterminate soybean cultivar, was used. n, p and k were applied in the rows at the levels of 0, 20 and 40 kg/ha (n), 0, 60 and 120 kg/ha (p2o5), and 0, 30 and 60 kg/ha (k2o). plant samples were taken at 21-day intervals starting at emergence and continuing until partial fall of the leaves (105 days after emergence). the several plants were analysed for macronutrients (n, p, k, ca, mg and s). at maturity, seeds from each plant were harvested and analysed for macronutrients. the following conclusions were drawn: . the period of highest rate of absorption of the nutrients by leaves and stems occurred between 44 and 55 days of age for the leaves, and between 55 and 76 days for stems. the amounts of nutrients removed, with exception of n and mg, were affected by the levels of phosphorus applied to the soil; with exception of n and mg, the nutrient contents varied according to plant parts; . the accumulation of n, p, k and mg in the soybean seeds was influenced only by the levels of phosphorus applied to the soil. the accumulation of ca and s in the seeds was not affected by the levels of n, p, and k. the removal of nutrients through harvest was influenced only by the effects of the treatments on yield of seeds.

Anais da Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz , 1976, DOI: 10.1590/S0071-12761976000100046
Abstract: two experiments were conducted, under green house conditions, to investigate the tolerance of tomato cultivars to aluminum and manganase. in the first experiment, six tomato cultivars : "santa cruz kada" - "angela iac 3946" _ "vital" - "roma vf" - "pavebo 220" and "ronita n", were cultivated in acid soil named "latossol roxo" wich contains high levels of aluminum and manganase. in the second experiment, the cultivars santa cruz kada and ronita n which showed differences in tolerance to the acid soil were cultivated in a modified hoagland & arnon nutrient solution with manganese levels of 0,0; 10,0 and 20,0 ppm and aluminum levels of 0,0; 10,0 and 20,0 ppm. the results obtained allowed to indicate cv. santa cruz kada as more tolerante to aluminum than cv. ronita n. the sensibility of this cultivar to aluminum is associated with a higher requirement in calcium and phosphorus, with a higher absorption of aluminum and with the effects of aluminum on the absorption of those nutrients. the tolerance of santa cruz kada to aluminum, evem being higher than ronita n, it can be considered of low degree, indicating that good responses to liming in acid soil can be obtained with these cultivars. for the two cultivars studied in nutrient solution, no detrimental effects of manganese levels were observed.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of al on the nitrate uptake and reduction in two rice cultivars, fernandes (al tolerant) and maravilha (al sensitive), exposed to 0 and 500 μm al. after 21 days of al treatment, growth in size and dry matter yield, al and nitrate contents and in vitro nitrate reductase activity (nr) in the tops and roots, and the kinetic constants of root nitrate uptake were determined. aluminum reduced the growth and dry matter yield of both plant parts only in the maravilha cultivar. aluminum content increased in the tops and roots of both cultivars, while nitrate content decreased only in the roots of maravilha cultivar. vmax did not change, while km of the nitrate uptake decreased in fernandes by 11% and increased about 310% in maravilha cultivar. in the presence of al the nr activity decreased in the roots of both cultivars, and in the leaves of maravilha cultivar. the al tolerant cultivar was more efficient in nitrate absorption and reduction, wich indicates that these processes could be important components of al tolerance in rice.
