Spasskyellina mandi n. sp. (Proteocephalidea: Monticelliidae), parasite of Pimelodus ornatus Kner, 1857 (Pisces: Pimelodidae) of the Paraná River, Paraná, Brazil
Pavanelli, Gilberto C;Takemoto, Ricardo M;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761996000600013
Abstract: spasskyellina mandi n. sp. (proteocephalidea: monticelliidae) is described from the siluriform fish pimelodus ornatus kner, 1857, caught in the paraná river, paraná, brazil. the new species differs from other species of the same genus mainly by a fewer number of testes and by a larger osmoregulatory canal. this is the second species of proteocephalidean cestode collected in p. ornatus.
New species of Proteocephalus (Cestoda - Proteocephalidae) parasitic in fishes from the Paraná River, Paraná, Brazil
Pavanelli, Gilberto C.;Takemoto, Ricardo M.;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1995, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761995000500009
Abstract: two species of the genus proteocephalus (cestoda: proteocephalidae) were collected in fishes from the paraná river. proteocephalus vazzolerae n. sp. from piaractus mesopotamicus and proteocephalus chubbi, n. sp. from gymnotus carapo are new species, and are described and illustrated. proteocephalus vazzolerae n. sp. is characterized mainly by the number of testes and the development of vitellaria. proteocephalus chubbi n. sp. can be differentiated from its congeners by a combination of characters which include, number of testes, number of proglottids, strobila length, scolex shape and disposition of vitellaria. this is the first record of proteocephalidean in p. mesopotamicus and g. carapo.
Influence of the type of environment and of the hydrological level variation in endoparasitic infrapopulations of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Agassiz) and Schizodon borelli (Boulenger) (Osteichthyes) of the high Paraná River, Brazil
Machado, Marion H;Pavanelli, Gilberto C;Takemoto, Ricardo M;
Revista Brasileira de Zoologia , 1995, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81751995000400023
Abstract: one hundred and ten specimens of pseudoplatystoma corruscans (agassiz, 1829) (pimelodidae), "pintado", and 582 specimens of schizodon borelli (boulenger, 1900) (anostomidae), "piava", collected in the floodplain of the high paraná river were analyzed. p. corruscans presented 74.54% of parasitism while s. borelli presented 19.42%. results of the present research show that in the case of p. corruscans, two species of proteocephalideans presented a significant relationship with the type of environment with regard to prevalence. spasskyelina spinulifera (woodland, 1935) was the only species that presented a relationship between the intensity of infection and the environment. in s. borelli only cucullanus pinnai travassos. artigas & pereira, 1928 presented a relationship with the environment. in this case the mean intensity was greater in lentic environments. the high values of the similarity index in the three environments studied indicate a considerable homogeneity of the endohelminths' species with regard to p. corruscans and s. borelli. this is probably due to what occurs with environments during the high water period when they are interlinked. the hydrological level was a less influential variable in endoparasitic infrapopulations of the hosts studied. in p. corruscans only three species, s. spinulifera, nomimoscolex sudobim woodland, 1934 and megatnylacus travassosi pavanelli & rego, 1992 presented higher mean intensities in the high water period. this fact was also observed in the case of c. pinnai in s. borelli.

Structure and diversity of endoparasitic infracommunities and the trophic level of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans and Schizodon borelli (Osteichthyes) of the high Paraná river
Machado, Marion Haruko;Pavanelli, Gilberto Cezar;Takemoto, Ricardo Massato;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761996000400010
Abstract: one hundred and ten specimens of pseudoplatystoma corruscans (pimelodidae) and 582 specimens of schizodon borelli (anostomidae) collected in the high paraná river were analyzed. on necropsy 74% of p. corruscans were found to be parasitized; proteocephalidean cestodes presented the greatest number. with regard to s. borelli, the percentage of parasitism reached 19.42% and the nematode cucullanus pinnai was the most abundant. the absence of correlation between the endoparasitic diversity and the standard length of the two host species indicates that each one presents homogeneity in alimentary behaviour during all its life time, permiting the uniform recruitment of the same species of endoparasites during all its ontogenetic development. independence of diversity values in relation to sex of p. corruscans and s. borelli evidences that the ecological relationships are similar between males and females in these species. both host's infrapopulations presented a typical overdispersed pattern of distribution with isolationist characteristics.

The study analyzed 33 specimens of Satanoperca pappaterra, captured from the Upper Paraná River floodplain between March 2004 and June of 2005, and 33 specimens of Crenicichla niederleinii captured from the Itaipu Reservoir between November 2005 and November 2006. Both were parasitized by monogeneans pertaining to the genus Sciadicleithrum and by metacercariae of Ascocotyle sp. The relative condition factor (Kn) did not differ significantly between parasitized and unparasitized individuals from the two host species. Only Sciadicleithrum sp.1, parasite of S. pappaterra, presented positive and significant correlation between the relative condition factor (Kn) and the abundance of parasitism. On the other hand, Ascocotyle sp. in both hosts and Sciadicleithrum sp.2 parasite of C. niederleiniidid not present correlations between the Kn and the abundance of parasitism.

The present study shows an ecological analysis of the ectoparasite infrapopulations in the nasal cavities of Leporinus lacustris from the upper Paraná river floodplain, Brazil. Two species of ectoparasites were found: the monogenetic Rhinoxenus arietinus and the copepod Gamispatulus schizodontis. The parasitism indexes were collated with the standard length, sex and relative condition factor (Kn) of the hosts. The differences in these indexes amongdifferent types of collection environments (lentic, lotic and semilotic) were also tested. The susceptibility of larger-size males to the infection by monogenean of the nasal cavities inrelation to females of similar sizes is suggested. However, the sex was not a determining factor for abundance and prevalence. The parasites seem not to exert a negative effect on the hosts’ health, therefore the Kn of parasitized and unparasitized fishes did not differ statistically, and Kn was not statistically associated with the abundance of parasites. In relation to the environments, it is possible that those with lesser water flow speed favor thetransmission and establishment of larger infrapopulations of copepods in the nasal cavities of Leporinus lacustris.

Abstract: The gills of 34 specimens of Satanoperca pappaterra (Heckel, 1840) were analyzed, all of which had been collected from the upper Paraná river floodplain in Brazil, between March 2004 to June 2005. Five species of parasites were found: two digenean (metacercariae), only one monogenean, one cestode (plerocercoid) and one copepod. The monogenean Sciadicleithrum sp. was the most abundant and prevalent, followed by the metacercariae Ascocotyle sp. The results did not show any significant difference in relation to host sex with regard to the prevalence and abundance of parasites between males and females. Only Sciadicleithrum sp. presented a significant positive correlation between standard host length and the abundance and prevalence ofparasitism. The metacercariae Ascocotyle sp. presented a significant positive relation only between standard host length and abundance. Through the results, a great abundance was observed forSciadicleithrum sp. and the metacercariae Ascocotyle sp. in connected lagoons. These differences suggest this type of environment can favor parasitism, especially in the case of monoxenic cycle ectoparasites, such as the monogenean. According to the importance value, only theSciadicleithrum sp. and the metacercariae Ascocotyle sp. were considered secondary, while the others were considered satellites. The typical pattern of overdispersion or aggregation from the parasitesystem was observed for Sciadicleithrum sp., the metacercariae Ascocotyle sp. and the metacercariae Diplostomum sp. Foram examinadas branquias de 34 espécimes de Satanoperca pappaterra (Heckel, 1840), coletados na planície de inunda o do Alto rio Paraná, Brasil, entre mar o de 2004 a junho de 2005.
