Abstract: background: working memory, phonological awareness and spelling hypothesis. aim: to verify the relationship between working memory, phonological awareness and spelling hypothesis in pre-school children and first graders. method: participants of this study were 90 students, belonging to state schools, who presented typical linguistic development. forty students were preschoolers, with the average age of six and 50 students were first graders, with the average age of seven. participants were submitted to an evaluation of the working memory abilities based on the working memory model (baddeley, 2000), involving phonological loop. phonological loop was evaluated using the auditory sequential test, subtest 5 of illinois test of psycholinguistic abilities (itpa), brazilian version (bogossian & santos, 1977), and the meaningless words memory test (kessler, 1997). phonological awareness abilities were investigated using the phonological awareness: instrument of sequential assessment (confias - moojen et al., 2003), involving syllabic and phonemic awareness tasks. writing was characterized according to ferreiro & teberosky (1999). results: preschoolers presented the ability of repeating sequences of 4.80 digits and 4.30 syllables. regarding phonological awareness, the performance in the syllabic level was of 19.68 and in the phonemic level was of 8.58. most of the preschoolers demonstrated to have a pre-syllabic writing hypothesis. first graders repeated, in average, sequences of 5.06 digits and 4.56 syllables. these children presented a phonological awareness of 31.12 in the syllabic level and of 16.18 in the phonemic level, and demonstrated to have an alphabetic writing hypothesis. conclusion: the performance of working memory, phonological awareness and spelling level are inter-related, as well as being related to chronological age, development and scholarity.

Abstract: the multiple oppositions approach is described as an alternative model for the treatment of children with the severe phonological disorders. the aim of this study was to analyze the therapeutic progress of five children with phonological disorder, submitted to the multiple oppositions approach, regarding the phonetic (sounds) and phonological (phonemes and altered distinctive features) inventories. participants were five children with phonological disorder, with mean age of 6 years and 1 month. speech data were collected through phonological assessment, and the multiple oppositions approach was used during 25 sessions of intervention. changes in the phonetic and phonological inventories (number of phonemes and altered distinctive features) of the subjects were analyzed. it was verified an increase in the number of sounds in the phonetic inventory and phonemes in the phonological inventory, as well as a decrease in the number of altered distinctive features. the multiple oppositions approach allows adequate progress in the treatment of subjects with phonological disorders, providing an expansion in the phonetic (acquisition of sounds) and phonological (acquisition of phonemes and decrease in the number of altered distinctive features) inventories.

Abstract: background: working memory. aim: to verify the performance of working memory abilities and their relation with the severity of phonological disorders. method: 45 children, with ages between 5.0 and 7.11 years, with evolutional phonological disorders (efd), 17 female and 18 male, were evaluated. all subjects were assessed using the child phonological evaluation proposed by yavas et al. (1991). the severity of the disorder was determined by the percentage of correct consonants (pcc) proposed by shriberg and kwiatkowski (1982), classifying the phonological disorder as severe, moderate-severe, average-moderate and average. after that, subtest 5 of the psycholinguistic abilities test (itpa - bogossian & santos, 1977) and the non-word repetition test (kessler, 1997) were applied. results: after analyzing the data according the statistical tests of kruskal wallis and duncan, it was verified that the performance of moderate-severe and severe individuals in the non-word repetition test was inferior to that of average-moderate and average individuals. however, performance results in the digit repetition test did not present a positive correlation with severity. conclusion: the performance of phonological memory has a relation with the severity of phonological disorders. this allows us to accept the idea that the phonologic memory is related to speech production. regarding the central executor, the results indicate that the performance in digit repetition, used to assess the central executor, did not present a correlation with the severity of the disorder. this can be justified by the fact that the central executor is more directly related to vocabulary acquisition and is responsible for processing and storing information.

Abstract: background: the therapeutic evolution of two subjects with different degree of phonological disorder treated by empty set with minimal distinction of distinctive traces. procedures: the sample was made up by two male subjects with phonological disorder. s1, age 4:5-year old, with mild-moderate phonological disorder, and s2, age 6:4-year old, with moderate-severe phonological disorder. both were treated by empty set with minimal distinction of traces. after treatment, we compared the initial and final phonological evaluation. results: s1 acquired in less time the selected target sounds, however, both subjects showed generalizations to untreated words and to other word positions. only s2 showed generalization across and within other sound classes. conclusion: the empty set with minimal distinction of distinctive traces was effective for the treatment of mild-moderate and moderate-severe disorders because both subjects showed improvement as for the speech.
Abordagem contrastiva na terapia dos desvios fonológicos: considera??es teóricas
Pagliarin, Karina Carlesso;Keske-Soares, Márcia;
Revista CEFAC , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-18462007000300006
Abstract: purpose: this study aims at reviewing the literature on therapeutic patterns utilized in the phonologic therapy, emphasizing the contrastive approaches, being these the minimal pairs/maximum oppositions and multiple oppositions approaches. methods: searches were accomplished throughout publications based on medline, scielo, bireme and pubmed data, books, thesis, dissertations, monographs and articles. results: the minimal pairs/ maximum opposition approaches involve the selection of couples of words that are distinguished by a single phoneme, and they may contrast few distinctive features (minimum pairs) or many features (maximum opposition). these patterns are recommended for children suffering from mild to mild-moderate disorder. in the multiple opposition approach, there are words that also differ in just one phoneme, however, these contrast diverse features due to the selection of many phonemes. this pattern is recommended for severe disorder, because, in general, the children replace many phonemes of the adult system by just one sound. conclusion: to choose the appropriate pattern, you must take into account the presence and the lack of phonemes in the sound system of the child, the kind and the severity level of the phonological disorder. moreover, the selection of the appropriate therapeutic pattern can help to obtain future generalizations.

PURPOSE: to analize the phonological changes resulting from the application of the Multiple Opposition Approach concerning the Percentage of Consonants Correct - Revised (PCC-R), on the number of phonemes that were acquired in the phonological inventory and on the types of generalization. METHOD: the researched group included five subjects with phonological disorders. It was carried out phonological and complementary assessments. The speech data were transcribed and analyzed through the phonological assessment pre and post-treatment. The subjects underwent the treatment based on the Multiple Opposition Approach. RESULTS: an increase in PCC-R, number of acquired phonemes and presence of different types of generalization in the final assessment, which was statistical difference, except the results of the generalization within sound class were not statistical difference in the pos-treatment. CONCLUSION: the Multiple Oppositions Approach was effective for the treatment of Brazilian Portuguese speakers because the model provided changes in the PCC-R, number of acquired phonemes and some generalizations (to lexical items non used during treatment, to another position of the word, inside a sound class and to other sound class).
