Correlation between delayed-enhancement magnetic resonance and nitrate myocardial Tc-99m tetrofosmin scintigraphy in myocardial infarction: a case report

Abstract: We describe a case of a 71-year-old man admitted for ischemic-like chest pain in which DE-MRI and post-nitrate 99mTc-tetrofosmin myocardial scintigraphy equally contributed to the diagnosis of previous lateral myocardial infarction.In this patient with coronary artery disease, the absence of uptake of tracer at myocardial scintigraphy appeared to be closely correlated to DE-MRI data. Cardiologists can use SPECT or DE-MRI to obtain similar information about myocardial viability.Delayed-enhancement magnetic resonance imaging (DE-MRI) is a highly accurate method for the non-invasive estimation of infarct size and location in acute or chronic myocardial infarction [1-3]. Cardiac MRI can also be used to detect the chronic consequence of myocardial infarction using its high degree of image definition [4]. It has recently been proposed as an alternative tool for the assessment of myocardial necrosis. Diagnostic methods for assessing myocardial viability, such as positron-emission tomography, single-photon-emission computed tomography (SPECT) and dobutamine echocardiography all have demonstrated limits in identifying the transmural extension of necrosis and/or viability of the ventricular wall [5-7].Previous studies [1,8,9] have documented the comparable efficacy of myocardial SPECT (using either thallium 201 or 99mTc-tetrofosmin) and DE-MRI in the evaluation of the presence, location, and transmural extension of myocardial necrosis. Furthermore, DE-MRI is a diagnostic method that is characterized by superior spatial resolution and the absence of ionizing radiation.In this case report we describe the case of a man with a previous lateral myocardial infarction, in which MRI showed a DE in the lateral wall according to the result of post-nitrate 99mTc-tetrofosmin imaging.A 71-year-old man was admitted for ischemic-like chest pain occurring 10 days prior to the hospital admission. Abstract: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) affects the connective tissue of the skin and internal organs, such as gastrointestinal tract, lungs, heart and kidneys. Disease progression involves the immune system, extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition and the microvasculature [1]. In the later stages of the disease, the vessel walls are thickened and hyalinized and their lumen is narrowed, leading to devascularization and tissue ischemia, which is not counterbalanced by active neo-angiogenesis. Angiogenesis, the process of new blood vessel generation from capillary or post-capillary venules, requires gross changes in endothelial cell function. In this process, an endothelial cell modifies the interaction with its basement membrane, remodels and migrates through ECM, proliferates, and differentiates. The final effect is the formation of endothelial tubules with a lumen, which are capable of transporting blood [2]. Newly expressed molecules or hyper-expression of pre-existing ones are coordinately required in this series of events, including proteolytic enzymes that are believed to be critical to ECM remodeling [3], growth factor activation [4] and release of ECM-trapped regulatory molecules [5,6].While gene-expression profiling using microarray technologies is available for skin biopsies [7] and cultured fibroblasts from individuals with a diagnosis of SSc [8,9], a global portrait of gene expression of microvascular endothelial cells (MVECs) has not been reported in the literature. In order to better understand whether dysregulated genes may contribute to the pathogenesis of defective angiogenesis, we have undertaken studies of gene expression in MVECs isolated from the lesional skin of patients affected by the diffuse form of SSc and matched healthy controls, using a 14,000 oligonucleotide (70 mer) microarray. Abstract: Great traveller and tireless observer, the Sicilian poet and writer Bartolo Cattafi was trying to escape from his land for his whole life, which was conducted paradoxically autour de sa chambre, but also travelling through islands and continents, where he found inspiration for his poetry and prose. For this reason, his literary contribution, which never betrayed his poetic nature and reporter character, gives an added value to the modern ulyssic dimension. The latter considers travelling as an essential life step and it is closely related to the concept of attachment to its own land. These two perspectives, often met in his different isole lontane , define the career of this singular migrant figure. Initially he moves to Milan to fulfil the need to find a job. Later he will find in his own Sicily the harmony and the serenity he has been looking for in the course of his travels. The writings collected in 2008 and object of this study reveal interesting affinities to those published in the “Mondadori” series edited by his good friend Vittorio Sereni and that explain part of the works belonging to the Sicilian author, clarifying his topoi and obsessions. Abstract: In Calvino's work East and West are strictly correlated. East, in particular, offers cues to fantastically transform themes and styles that cross through his whole creative career. In 1977 Calvino, in collaboration with the artist Toti Scialoja, worked for the production of a series of six fairy-tales to be performed on stage – L'ussaro e la luna, Lo specchio e il bersaglio, La foresta-radice-labirinto, La città abbandonata, Le porte di Bagdad, Il naufrago Valdemaro – collected under the same title Il teatro dei ventagli. Starting from the analysis of these texts, the essay wants to know how in the author's intentions there is a clear contact and dialogue with a different culture. A dialogue that Calvino’s other works have hardly emphasized in a similar keen and suggestive manner, recalling, at the same time, with few but essential lines, few and significant gestures, a linear and bare theatre, plunged in a dreamlike and fantastic atmosphere, mindful of the Oriental lesson and of the deep symbolic charge of his subjects. Oriente e Occidente sono nell’opera di Calvino strettamente intrecciati. L’Oriente, in particolare, offre spunti per trasfigurare fantasticamente, secondo moduli già sperimentati per la curatela delle Fiabe italiane o nella stesura delle Città invisibili, temi e stilemi che attraversano l’intera sua parabola creativa. Nel 1977 Calvino, in collaborazione con l’artista Toti Scialoja, lavora alla realizzazione di una serie di sei fiabe da portare in scena – L’ussaro e la luna, Lo specchio e il bersaglio, La foresta-radice-labirinto, La città abbandonata, Le porte di Bagdad, Il naufrago Valdemaro – raccolte sotto il titolo complessivo Il teatro dei ventagli. Partendo dall’analisi di questi testi, il saggio intende dimostrare come nelle intenzioni dello scrittore si sia palesato un contatto e un dialogo con una cultura diversa. Un dialogo che difficilmente altre sue opere hanno evidenziato in maniera altrettanto penetrante e suggestiva, rievocando, allo stesso tempo, con poche ma essenziali battute e pochi e significativi gesti un teatro lineare e spoglio, immerso in una atmosfera irreale e fantastica, memore della lezione orientale e dell’alta carica simbolica dei suoi oggetti.

Abstract: El proyecto fundacional de Estado-nación concibió a las fronteras como espacios vacíos donde concretar la civilización. Los Territorios Nacionales fueron incorporados a la categoría de frontera, y la escuela definida como una de las instituciones estatales que producirían la civilización en aquellos espacios. En este artículo se busca describir los modos en que los objetivos fundacionales se concretaban en el Territorio Nacional del Chaco entre 1900 y 1909, así como dar cuenta de los posicionamientos adoptados por el Inspector Raúl Díaz en contacto con la frontera y sus pobladores nativos, indígenas e inmigrantes.
Thixocasting and rheocasting technologies, improvements going on

Abstract: Purpose: The paper proposes an overview of the actual most important and applied rheocasting technologies for the manufacturing of high performance Al components. Some excellent results recently attained in industrial applications are presented and discussed.Design/methodology/approach: Samples were machined from the produced parts and mechanical tests, i.e. tensile and impact, were executed on series of samples; moreover, microstructure features and the morphology of fractures were observed to check the quality of alloys and of produced castings.Findings: Despite the numerous rheocasting processes recently developed, it appears that their industrial application is still limited and some only are really interesting for the production of high performance component. The done investigations show that the use of a very simple and well controlled process leads to produce parts having excellent properties and reliability. The results obtained up to now suggest that the rheocasting route can be considered an attractive fabrication technology to produce high quality products, especially for aluminium alloys.Research limitations/implications: A lot of rheocasting processes are proposed, but for the final success it is necessary to choice a really valid process and to maintain all the steps under a strict control.Practical implications: The obtained results can be used for searching the appropriate way of improving the performance of highly stressed parts, using a very competitive and simple rheocasting process, contributing to make aluminium and its alloys still more attractive for light-weighting components for structural, as well as for automotive and aeronautic/aerospace applications.Originality/value: The main SSM technologies and future trends are presented and discussed. The properties of A356 and A357 aluminium alloys were investigated to establish the influence of the adopted Rheocasting process on the final performances and reliability of the produced parts.
Contribution to study and development of PM stainless steels with improved properties

Abstract: Purpose: of this paper is to present the studies performed at Politecnico di Torino aimed to the development of innovative composition of PM duplex stainless steels characterized with very high and unique mechanical and corrosion resistance properties. Previously a base research to attain improvement of quality and performances of sintered AISI 316L has been developed. Moreover the possibility to enhance mechanical and corrosion resistance properties through contact infiltration or through the use of reactive sintering techniques has also been demonstrated and discussed.Design/methodology/approach: The duplex compositions have been obtained using austenitic AISI 316L and AISI 410L as starting base powders. While AISI 316L stainless steel samples have been manufactured using different combinations of compacting pressure and sintering parameters, or a modified composition able to allow reactive sintering process, as well as the contact infiltration with bronze.Findings: The studies have been forwarded towards the static and dynamic mechanical properties, as well as the corrosion behavior. Lowering the porosity level and increasing the sintering degree, by use of higher compacting pressure or sintering temperature, is of great effectiveness, especially from the point of view of mechanical properties. Moreover, the innovative duplex composition are very promising.Practical implications: according to achieved results, duplex stainless steels can be obtained starting from austenitic of martensitic stainless steel powders by simple addition of single elements, through a process in vacuum. Concerning traditional austenitic grades, the obtained results demonstrate the benefits of contact infiltration and of reactive sintering techniques to sinter stainless steels components having higher density and better mechanical and corrosion resistance properties than the traditional compositions, compacted at high pressure and sintered at elevated temperature.Originality/value: very promising results have been obtained with special compositions able to allow the production of real duplex alloys, as well as with a modified composition of AISI 316L grade able to realize a reactive sintering process.
Properties of coatings on sintered iron alloys

Abstract: Purpose: In this paper the attention has been focused on the thermal spray coatings applied to PM steels, inparticular the studies have been directed to unalloyed and to molybdenum alloyed sintered samples, coated withWC-Co and WC-CoCr powders, using the HVOF process.Design/methodology/approach: The performance of HVOF coatings on sintered steels were studied after sprayingthe samples with WC-Co and WC-CoCr powders. The porosity of the specimens allows enough adhesion betweensubstrate and coating, in this manner previous grit blasting of the surfaces of substrates are not necessary.Findings: Regarding the properties of coating layers the composition of the substrate has no remarkable influence,being the sprayed powders composition and the process parameters the most influencing factors. The two powdersshown in the as-sprayed state decomposition of the tungsten carbide and an amorphous metal binder. The WC-Cocoatings contain more tungsten oxidation products compared to WC-CoCr coatings. Chromium might have a function asan oxidation buffer: in oxygenating atmospheres it partly protects tungsten carbide from oxidation by forming Cr2O3.Research implications: Adhesion of the coatings was the weak point of coatings originated from the WC-Copowder, whereas the cohesion was sometimes insufficient within the WC-CoCr coatings.Practical implications: The wear mechanisms, which occurred during sliding friction, are similar for thedifferent coatings: after a run-in phase, in which the asperities are mainly abrasively worn away, adhesive andabrasive processes take place. Chromium seems to increase the carbide binding function of the metal matrix andto reduce the residual stresses within the coating.Originality/value: The overall performance of the WC-CoCr coatings is the best, the supreme quality of WCCoCrcoatings being the reduced tensile stresses and the good bonding strength. All these properties relate tothe presence of Cr within the metal matrix, it partly prevents WC from oxidation, it increases the hardness viasolid solution hardening and by forming Cr2O3, what also increases the corrosion resistance of the coating, andit binds tungsten carbide in an excellent way.
