Comunidade de cigarrinhas (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha) de uma área de campo do município de Viam?o, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

Abstract: a study was conducted about the auchenorrhyncha assembly of grassland area with earthmounds of forests at viam?o county, rio grande do sul state from november, 1996 to november, 1997. forty-four samples were taken with the aid of a square mouth sweeping net. the collections were alleatory made, employing the method of transects. in total 5350 individuals were collected belonging to 38 species and seven families: cicadellidae (3074), issidae (1870), membracidae (379) dictyopharidae (9), cercopidae (7), cixiidae (6) and delphacidae (1). the commonest species was nubithia grisescens stal (issidae) with 1669 (31.2%) specimens. the homopterans showed a highest density in august (3.38 ind/m3) and the lowest in april (0.32 ind./m3). a total richness of 45 species was estimated by "jacknife" procedure. shannon-wiener's heterogenity index was 2.18. pielou's homogenity index was 0.60.
Brochosomes-for-eggs of the Proconiini (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae, Cicadellinae) species associated with orchards of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Abstract: brochosomes are ultramicroscopic reticulate bodies produced by the malpighian tubules of leafhoppers. brochosomes are usually either spherical (brochosomes-for-integument) or elongated (brochosomes-for-eggs). in this study, the proconiini species were diagnosed according to their brochosomes-for-eggs. brochosome-for-eggs traits and dichotomous key were also discussed. the specimens were collected in nine orchards of citrus sinensis (valencia orange), using yellow sticky traps. the orchards are located in seven counties in the state of rio grande do sul: tenente portela, ijuí, jaguari, harmonia, taquari, montenegro, and pelotas. data were collected from october 1999 to december 2000, and from october 2001 to march 2002. seven species capable of producing brochosomes-for-eggs were identified: acrogonia citrina marucci & cavichioli, homalodisca ignorata melichar, molomea consolida shr?der, molomea lineiceps young, molomea magna (walker), oncometopia facialis (signoret), and oncometopia fusca melichar. this study shows that the diversity among brochosomes-for-eggs was a useful tool to identify the proconiini species.

Abstract: the species of termitococcinae are revised. this subfamily, restricted to the neotropical region, is composed of five valid species included in two genera: termitococcus aster silvestri, 1901, termitococcus carratoi silvestri, 1936, eurhizococcus brasiliensis (wille, 1922), eurhizococcus brevicornis (silvestri, 1901), and eurhizococcus colombianus jakubski, 1965. the present study provides the redescription of these species, including the morphological characterization of the three stages (crawlers, cyst and adult female). identification keys and illustrations for the species are also included. lectotypes and paralectotypes of two species are designated.

Abstract: frankliniella schultzei (trybom) (thysanoptera: thripidae) was found infesting tomato (lycopersicon esculentum mill.) in porto alegre, rs. the work was carried out in the laboratory where thrips were placed in acetate pots, covered with parafilm and fed daily with tomato leaflets. observations of its life cycle were made for two consecutive generations (n = 109 individuals). embryonic period lasted 4.3 d; the 1st instar 2.5 d; the 2nd instar 2.5 d; prepupa 1.2 d; pupa 2. 1 d; duration of the immature phase 8.3 d; male longevity lasted 13.1 and female longevity 13.6 d; viability of the instars was 75.5% 1st; 76.3% 2nd; prepupa 91.9%; pupa 80.0%; and cycle duration took 12.6 d. reproduction was exclusively partenogenetic.
Spatial Interpolation Applied a Crustal Thickness in Brazil  [PDF]

Abstract: The use of spatial interpolation methods of data is becoming increasingly common in geophysical analysis, for that reason, currently, several software already contain many of these methods, allowing more detailed studies. In the present work four interpolation methods are evaluated, for the crustal thickness data of Brazil tectonic provinces, with the intention of making Moho’s map of the regions. The methods used were IDW, Natural Neighbor, Spline and Kriging. We compiled 257 data that constituted a geographic database implemented in the template Postgree PostGIS and were processed using the tools of interpolation located in the Spatyal Analyst Tools program ArcGIS?9 ESRI. Traditional methods, IDW, Natural Neighbor and Spline, generate artifacts in their results, the effects of aim, not consistent with the behavior of crust. Such anomalies are generated because of mathematical formulation methods added to data compiled gravimetry. The analysis results of geostatistical Kriging are more refined and consistent, showing no specific anormalities, i.e., the crustal thickness variation (thinning and thickening) is introduced gradually. Initial our estimates were separated in four specific blocks. With the approval of new networks (BRASIS, RSISNE and RSIS), the crustal thickness database for Brazil may be amended or supplemented so that new models may be generated more consistently, complementing studies of regional tectonics evolution and seismicity.

Abstract: this paper aimed to study leafhopper's populational dynamics and constancy on herbaceous vegetation of a sweet orange orchard (citrus sinensis (l.) osbeck, valencia variety) in southern brazil. the survey was performed with sweeping net method, from february/2001 to january/2002. monthly, 10 samples of 50 sweeps were taken in the herbaceous vegetation between orchard's lines (n = 500 sweeps/sampling). a total of 928 individuals were collected, belonging to nine species: bucephalogonia xanthophis (berg, 1879), diedrocephala variegata (fabricius, 1775), hortensia similis (walker, 1851), macugonalia leucomelas (walker, 1851), parathona gratiosa (blanchard, 1840), plesiommata corniculata young, 1977, sibovia sagata (signoret, 1854), sonesimia grossa (signoret, 1854), and tapajosa rubromarginata (signoret, 1855). the highest abundance was registered in summer and spring. hortensia similis and m. leucomelas were the only species considered constant during the survey. leafhopper abundance was lower in the april and december, probably due to abiotic factors (rainfall) and vegetation structure (plants height) effects.

Abstract: in this work, objective was to evaluate the capacity of a rietema kind of hydrocyclone, with 50 mm diameter, to retain suspended sand in irrigation water. the hydrocyclone was operated with pressure differentials that varied from 10 to 60 kpa and discharges between 1,159.90 and 2,603.60 l h-1. the sand concentration in suspension varied from 2.81 to 7.01 g l-1. the best results were obtained for the pressure differentials of 10 and 20 kpa, with cut diameter sizes of 50 mm showing granulometric efficiency of 70%.
