Hepatitis E Virus Seroprevalence in Austrian Adults: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study among Civilians and Military Professionals

Abstract: Background Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) infection is globally increasing. The present study was performed to investigate the HEV seroprevalence, exposure risks as well as occupational risks for military personnel in Austria, a Central European country. Methods and Findings A nationwide cross-sectional seroprevalence study was performed in 997 healthy Austrian adults, professional soldiers and civilians. Routine laboratory and HEV specific antibodies were determined. In addition, epidemiological information on possible risk factors for exposure to HEV was obtained. The overall seropositivity for HEV antibodies was 14.3% and significantly increased with age. Seroprevalence was significantly higher among individuals with previous military employments abroad (21.4% vs. 9.9%) and among professional soldiers aged 30–39 years (20.2% vs. 7.3%). No association was found for private travel, occupational or private animal contact or regular outdoor activities. Individuals who tested positive for antibodies against HEV had significantly higher laboratory values regarding liver enzymes, lipid levels and blood fasting glucose. Conclusions Exposure to HEV is common in Austria. Military employment abroad could be a potential risk factor for HEV infection. Further studies are required to investigate the significance of pathological laboratory results found among asymptomatic individuals previously exposed to HEV.
Performance of the QuickVue Influenza A+B Rapid Test for Pandemic H1N1 (2009) Virus Infection in Adults

Abstract: To investigate the diagnostic accuracy of the QuickVue? Influenza A+B rapid test we conducted a prospective observational study in which this rapid test was compared with a real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for pandemic influenza A H1N1 (2009) infection in Austrian adults. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of the QuickVue test compared with the RT-PCR were 26% (95% CI 18–35), 98% (95% CI 92–100), 94% (95% CI 80–99) and 50% (95% CI 42–58), respectively. The prevalence of pandemic H1N1 (2009) virus infection among the 209 patients included in the study was 57%. Our data suggest that a positive QuickVue test provides considerable information for the diagnosis of pandemic influenza A H1N1 (2009) virus infection in young adults but that a negative QuickVue test result should, if relevant for patient management or public health measures, be verified using PCR.

Abstract: In March 2009, the first teleacupuncture between China and Austria was performed. This publica-tion summarizes the first important results. 24- hour electrocardiograms were registered in Bei-jing and analyzed in Graz. A heart rate variability monitor partly developed in Austria was used for recording. Data were transferred via internet over a distance of 7,650 km. For the spectral analysis of heart rate variability a new method, the so-called ‘Fire of Life’ illustration, was ap-plied. The state of health of a 31-year-old patient before, during and after acupuncture treatment sessions was documented. Despite several limi- tations, transcontinental teleacupuncture opens up new possibilities in public health.

Abstract: It is pointed out that the inflationary flat Λ-CDM-model coming out from a big bang seems to be inconsistent. An alternative model based on previous work by the author is outlined. It starts with a geometrical phase transition in Minkowski space where the source of the gravitational field is a Higgs-like scalar field φ. After the phase transition space-time is a contracting anti-deSitter space. Matter and radiation are created over a very long period of about 30 billion years from the gravitational energy. About 44 billion years after the phase transition the universe runs through a nonsingular minimum.

Abstract:
“The postmodern city is a myth, a tale, a telling, a poignant narrative that builds on the past to continually new horizons… The postmodern city is not only an epitomizing model of contemporary social and economic development, but also a metaphysical reality, a place where the real and the imagined are persistently commingled in ways we have only begun to understand…” (Chambers, 1990; Soja 2000). Normative notions on the city have to be dissected as an intersection of the near and the far order of urban societies (Lefebvre, 1996) and as fluid conceptualizations in a heterochronical context. However, cities similarly have to be read as “thirdspaces” (Soja, 1996)—contestations of mythical and real urban spaces and places, continuously re-interpreted and endowing urban spaces and places with even transient meanings. The paper seeks to grasp Foucault’s notions on heterotopia as a theoretical framework and èpistemé for approaching these “thirdspaces”—in-between the social relations and their inscriptions into the material reality of cities.

Abstract: This short review article gives a brief description of the TCM Research Center Graz, especially the part of high-tech acupuncture research. A new technology for non-invasive acupuncture stimulation using violet laser (405 nm, 110 mW, 500 µm) is described. With this kind of laser it is possible to induce a so-called Deqi sensation which is very important in Chinese acupuncture. The second part of the review paper describes the new teleacupuncture which has been performed for the first time between the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and the TCM Research Center Graz at the Medical University of Graz.
Scrutinizing the atmospheric greenhouse effect and its climatic impact  [PDF]

Abstract: In this paper, we scrutinize two completely different explanations of the so-called atmospheric greenhouse effect: First, the explanation of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the World Meteorological Organization (W?MO) quan- tifying this effect by two characteristic temperatures, secondly, the explanation of Ramanathan et al. [1] that is mainly based on an energy-flux budget for the Earth-atmosphere system. Both explanations are related to the global scale. In addition, we debate the meaning of climate, climate change, climate variability and climate variation to outline in which way the atmospheric greenhouse effect might be responsible for climate change and climate variability, respectively. In doing so, we distinguish between two different branches of climatology, namely 1) physical climatology in which the boundary conditions of the Earth-atmosphere system play the dominant role and 2) statistical climatology that is dealing with the statistical description of fortuitous weather events which had been happening in climate periods; each of them usually comprises 30 years. Based on our findings, we argue that 1) the so-called atmospheric greenhouse effect cannot be proved by the statistical description of fortuitous weather events that took place in a climate period, 2) the description by AMS and W?MO has to be discarded because of physical reasons, 3) energy-flux budgets for the Earth-atmosphere system do not provide tangible evidence that the atmospheric greenhouse effect does exist. Because of this lack of tangible evidence it is time to acknowledge that the atmospheric greenhouse effect and especially its climatic impact are based on meritless conjectures.
Biosimilar Epoetin Zeta in Nephrology: Effect of Injection Frequency on Weekly Dose  [PDF]

Abstract: Aim: This observational clinical study tested the effect of injection frequency of the biosimilar epoetin zeta on the weekly dose needed to maintain stable hemoglobin levels in chronic kidney diseases (CKD) patients on intermittent high-flux hemodialysis (HD). Patients and Methods: CKD patients (n = 33) on regular HD therapy 3 times a week were treated for 18 months with epoetin zeta i.v. The hemoglobin levels, the weekly dose as well as the injection frequency of epoetin zeta were monitored at least every two weeks. Patients were followed in three time periods: 1) extended follow-up (months 1 - 18); 2) intervention phase (months 19 - 21); and 3) post intervention observation phase (months 28 - 30). During extended follow-up the majority of patients (n = 21) received only one injection of epoetin zeta per week. During the intervention phase, injection frequency was increased to 3 injections per week in all patients accompanied by a reduction in weekly doses of approximately 20%
A Study of Personality and Family- and School Environment and Possible Interactional Effects in 244 Swedish Children—A Multiple Regression Analysis  [PDF]

Abstract:

The aim of the study was to examine relationships between psychosocial family- and school environment and personality as assessed by the Junior Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ-J) and possible personality interactional effects. The study was based on 244 Swedish girls and boys, 10 - 19 years old, who filled in the Family- and School Psychosocial Environment (FSPE) questionnaire and the EPQ-J. A multiple regression analysis showed that the FSPE-factor family conflicts and school discipline predicts psychoticism (antisocial personality), and that the FSPE-factor warmth, support and openness from parents, siblings and peers predict extraversion. Sex, psychoticism and the size of sibling group predicted neuroticism. Spanking was reported in various degrees by 8.1 percent of the children, and this factor was related to psychoticism. These results support socialization theories. The most unexpected finding was the impact of interactions between personality variables themselves, influencing the FSPE’s predictability of neuroticism. Discussion about the advantage of the use of statistic control in a multiple regression, possible causal links between psychosocial environment and personality, limitations and further research propositions concludes the article.

Technical Parameters for Laser Acupuncture to Elicit Peripheral and Central Effects: State-of-the-Art and Short Guidelines Based on Results from the Medical University of Graz, the German Academy of Acupuncture, and the Scientific Literature

Abstract: The scientific literature in the area of laser acupuncture is rather large; however, the actual mechanisms and effects have not yet been proven in detail. Since the early days of laser acupuncture, there are still many open questions concerning technical parameters of this innovative technique. In this paper, we report about the most important technical parameters (wavelength, output power, power density, energy density, dose range, and continuous or pulsed laser) for laser acupuncture and present quantitative results for optimal laser stimulation, which allow eliciting reproducible effects in the periphery and in the brain. There are several position statements on laser acupuncture and also several review articles in scientific literature concerning clinical effectiveness of laser acupuncture. For example, the Australian Medical Acupuncture College stated recently that “the optimal energy density for laser acupuncture and biostimulation, based on current clinical experience, is 4 J/cm2”. However, our results of previous research studies and of this paper clearly show that dose must be adjusted according to the individual responses.
