Effect of Nicotine on Dopamine and Glutathione Levels in Presence of Oligoelements in Brain Regions of Young Rats——Effect of Nicotine on Brain Regions of Rat  [PDF]

Abstract: Aim: The purpose of this study was to understand the mechanism of nicotine mediated addiction and the role of oligoelements in reducing its effect. Methods: Male Wistar rats (weight 80 g) were treated with single and repeated doses of nicotine and/or oligoelements as follows: group 1 (control) NaCl 0.9%; group 2, nicotine (1 mg/kg); group 3, oligoelements (50 μl/rat); and group 4, nicotine (1 mg/kg) + oligoelements (50 μl/rat). All drugs were intraperitoneally administered for 4 days. Blood for the measurement of glucose was obtained from all the animals. Samples of the brain regions (cortex, hemispheres and cerebellum + medulla oblongata) of each rat were obtained and used to measure the concentrations of dopamine, GSH levels, and lipid peroxidation (TBARS) using fluorescence and spectrophotometric methods. Results: Glucose level increased in rats treated with nicotine and oligoelements (p < 0.05), while GSH level decreased in cerebellum/medulla oblongata and hemispheres (p < 0.05) of the same animals. TBARS levels increased in cerebellum/medulla oblongata and hemispheres of animals treated with nicotine and oligoelements, but decreased in the same regions (p < 0.05) in rats treated only with oligoelements. The levels of dopamine decreased in cortex and hemispheres, but increased in cerebellum/medulla and oblongata regions of rats treated with both compounds (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Nicotine and oligoelements are associated with increase in the level of glucose, an effect that was more pronounced in the group treated with both drugs. Reduction of oxidative stress and dopamine metabolism may be involved in this effect.

Abstract: the objetive of the present study was to investigate the effects of prenatal and postnatal nutrition, and the postnatal exposure of toluene vapors over open field performance in wistar rats. material and methods: nulliparous wistar female rats were nourished by restricting food to 50% of ad libitum intake compared to that consumed by well nourished rats, three weeks before they were mated and kept on this diet during gestation, and lactation. the offspring following were malnourished by the same method until 60 days postnatally. toluene inhalating and by the offspring was carried out at 40 to 60 days postnatally. the daily toluene dose used was 0.4 ml placed in a 3.7 l crystal chamber for 15 minutes. six groups were constituted with 10-14 animals: three groups well nourished, were kept under controlled laboratory conditions (n), exposed to toluene vapors (nt), or as a handling control (cm); and three undernourished, were kept under controlled laboratory conditions (d), exposed to toluene vapors (dt), or as a handling control (dm). all animals were submitted to an open-field performance test during which they were filmed for 5 minutes moving in a 100 x 100 x 45 cm box. the total distance covered was estimated by reviewing the videotape. results, the weight and distance were analyzed using bonferroni, feces fecals u de mann-witney and to sprucing up with anova. conclusions, these indicated assotiation of the malnutrition and toluene inhalation exposure significantly reduced the rats body weight. in response to the exposure to a new environment, nourished groups rats, that were introduced in the inhalation chamber without solvent (nm and dm), showed greater activity in the open field than the other groups.
Effect of Cardioxane and Selenium on Lipoperoxidation and Levels of Dopamine in Rat Brain and Heart  [PDF]

Abstract: Background: Cardioxane has been probed in patients with advanced malignancies to protect the heart. Selenium, an essential micronutrient exerts varieties of functions such as antioxidant. The aim of this study was to test if cardioxane (CDX) and selenium (Se) have additive antioxidant protective effect on brain and heart, and their relation with dopamine levels. Methods: Thirty-six male Wistar rats divided in groups of 6 animals each, were treated as follows: G1, saline solution 0.9% (control); G2, 100 mg/kg of CDX; G3, 60 μg/kg of Se; G4, 20 mg/kg of 3-nitropropionic acid (3NP); G5, 3NP + CDX and G6, 3NP + Se. 3NP was used as an oxidative stress inducer. Drugs were administered intraperitoneally for 5 days. The animals were sacrificed on the last day of treatment and the brain and heart were extracted and used to measure lipid peroxidation, dopamine, glutathione (GSH), ATPase, calcium, and H2O2. Results: In G2 and G5, dopamine decreased in cortex and striatum while GSH increased in heart, cortex and cerebellum/medulla oblongata. ATPase activity increased in heart and cortex of groups 2, 3, 5 and 6. Lipoperoxidation and H2O2 increased in cortex of animals treated with 3NP. Conclusion: These results suggest that CDX increases antioxidant capacity in the brain and heart while selenium promotes alteration in dopamine metabolism in view of the capacity of 3NP to generate free radicals.

Abstract: objective: to determine the prevalence and the factors associated with pain in the mexican elderly. material and methods: persons ages 50 years or older answered the question: "do you often suffer physical pain?" prevalences were obtained, afterwhich multivariate analyses were conducted for the entire sample and for each age group to determine the associated factors. results: pain prevalence was 41.5%, more frequent in women (48.3% vs. 33.6%) and increased with age. there was a lower prevalence for persons with more education. pain was directly associated with the report of arthritis, lung disease, falls, hypertension, depression, stroke, cancer history and problems with activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living. conclusions: pain is a common problem among elderly and is associated with some comorbidities.

Abstract: the ischiatic ulcers develop as a consecuense of long sitting position. this kind of ulcers relapse in a great percentage and are a challenge for clinicians. most of the time causes long hospital stays, multiple surgical procedures and complex antimicrobial therapy. coverage can be done with several myocutaneous flaps, including gluteus maximus, biceps femoris, gracilis, tensor fascia lata, semitendinosus, semimembranosus, etc. in this study we used the myocutenous gluteus maximus flap, in which we incorporate, as a variation, a perforating irrigated cutaneous island with v-y advancement without tension. our goal was to demostrate that the myocutaneous gluteus maximus flap could be the first choice procedure in ischiatic ulcers. we propose, as a surgical variant, the complete liberation of the muscle, which provides a wide range of rotation. in adittion, this variant, includes a cutaneous island with v-y advancement without tension. all of this reduces morbidity and percentage of relapse. thirteen flaps v-y advancement and rotation myocutenous gluteus maximus flaps were made to cover grade iii and iv ischiatic ulcers. the asociated diseases were tetraplegia y paraplegia due to medular injury and familiar spastic paraplegia. follow up was from 6 months to 7 years and, to date, no morbidity or relapse has been documented. in our experience the myocutenous gluteus maximus flap would be the firts choice in ischiatic ulcers treatment because of their large volume and abundant irrigation and because of its migration from cefalic to caudal. the closure without tension is due to the complete disecction of the muscle and the cutaneous island v-y advancement. we assume this is the reason for the absense of relapse and complications.
Purificación de cinco isoformas de la hormona luteinizante bovina (bLH). Caracterización fisicoquímica, biológica e inmunológica

Abstract: El estudio describe la purifi cación de cinco isoformas de LH a partir del extracto hipofi sario bovino. Las fracciones obtenidas a pH 6.8 y a pH 9.5 de la cromatografía de intercambio catiónico, se repurifi caron en condiciones idénticas en DEAE-Sephacel para obtener a la LH-I (1.2 mg/kg de hipófi sis) y las LH- II (1.8 mg/kg), LH-III (1.5 mg/kg) LH-IV (1.2 mg/kg) y LH-V (7.0 mg/kg), respectivamente. La movilidad relativa (Rf) de cada isoforma se determinó por una electroforesis en geles de poliacrilamida. La LH-I presentó un Rf de 0.16 cm; las LH-II, III y IV de 0.044 cm y la LH-V de 0.11cm. El peso molecular (PM) de las LH-I y LH-V correspondió a 37.5 kilodaltones (kDa), y de 38.5 kDa para la LH-II, LH-III y LH-IV. El análisis por inmunotransferencia identifi có bandas de PM de 59.0, 37.5 y 22.0 kDa en los estándares como en las isoformas. La potencia biológica in vivo correspondió a 1.04 U/mg (LH-I); 5.9 U/mg (LH-II), 0.16 U/mg (LH-III), 0.86 U/mg (LH-IV) y 1.4 U/mg (LH-V) y la concentración de LH por radioinmunoensayo (RIA) a la dosis ED50 fue de 2.27 ng/tubo (LH-I), 1.19 ng/tubo (LH-II), 1.35 ng/tubo (LH-III), 0.66 ng/tubo (LH-IV) y 1.71 ng/tubo (LH-V). Los datos muestran la obtención de dos isoformas de elución a pH 6.8 (I y V) y tres isoformas a pH 9.5 (II, III y IV), con heterogeneidad de carga, diferente actividad biológica y concentración inmunorreactiva de LH en un sistema estándar, con rendimientos superiores para intentar el desarrollo de sistemas analíticos más precisos.

Abstract: in this study, water sanitation laws and methods (both mexican and international) are compared, and the feasibility of incorporating recommendations issued by international organizations into mexican legislation is assessed. when climate, demographic, or industry changes occur, there is an apparent need to broaden the range of substances and organisms being measured and regulated in the water. this comparative analysis identifies the following challenges: improving equipment sensitivity and specificity; removing contaminants that interfere with the process; increasing pathogen concentration of the sample; reducing manpower, equipment, and infrastructure requirements; identifying priority pathogens; adopting a flexible evaluation system; comparing and evaluating similar efforts carried out by other countries; and lastly, collating local regulations with international ones.
Presencia de un polimorfismo de la CSP-12 relacionado con susceptibilidad a sepsis grave en una muestra de tres poblaciones colombianas

Abstract: sepsis, a syndrome of systemic response to infection is a major public health problem, because it is associated with high morbidity and mortality. among the genes shown to be associated with this syndrome, there is one which encodes for caspase-12 (csp-12). within this gene, the single nucleotide polymorphism 125t>c located in exon 4, which predicts a long form of the protein, has been associated with severe sepsis and increased related mortality. on the other hand, higher frequency of allele l has been reported in african american populations. the present study evaluated the csp-12 polymorphism 125t>c in 128 individuals: 81 patients with sepsis, 23 healthy african colombian subjects and 24 healthy individuals from medellin-colombia. we found 121 individuals homozygous s/s (csp-12 short) in these three populations and 7 heterozygotes s/l, discriminated as follows: 3 septic patients, 3 african colombians and 1 healthy subject from medellin. this preliminary data suggest that the csp-12l allele is present in the colombian population, both in african colombians and mestizo individuals (either septic patients or healthy individuals).therefore, more comprehensive studies should be performed to better understand the genetic basis of the immune response of patients with sepsis in order to design more rational and personalized therapies to prevent this syndrome.
Motor Effects of 1,3-Disubstituted 8-Styrylxanthines as A1 and A2 Adenosine-Receptor Antagonists in Rats  [PDF]

A series of 1,3-substituted 8-styrylxanthines (11a-d) was synthesized, under chemo- and regioselective conditions, in a good overall yield. The compounds showed affinity towards both A1 and A2A-adenosine receptors by radioligand binding by means of in vitro assays. The (E)-3-ethyl-1-propyl-8-styrylxanthine (11a) showed the greatest affinity towards the A2A receptor, whereas (E)-3-pentyl-1-propyl-8-styrylxanthine (11d) showed the greatest affinity for the A1 receptor. When the 8-styrylxanthines 11a (A15Et) and 11c (A15Bu) were administrated in rats, which were previously injured with 6-hydroxydopamine at the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc), the turning behavior decreased 50%. Based on these results we propose to A15Et as a potential compound to treat some symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Abstract: Nuestro estudio pretende hacer hincapié no sólo en aquellas políticas violentas o adversas que motivan los desplazamientos de personas, sino también en cómo los factores económicos, que en muchos casos los podemos encontrar encubiertos por motivaciones políticas, también son motivo de desplazamiento forzado y cómo en muchos momentos son confundidos o encubiertos unos en los otros para no darles el valor y la categoría que les corresponde, como lo podemos observar en los casos de Haití y Cuba, que ejemplifican perfectamente esta cuestión y, sobre todo, caracterizan el tipo de movimiento de la población.
