Abstract: Drawings by Georges Seurat in the collection of TheMuseum of Modern Art were examined for a recent exhibition.Fourier transform infrared micro-spectroscopy (micro-FTIR) has found a shellac fixative on all of the drawingsexamined. It is apparent that Seurat applied this resinbecause it appears in areas corresponding to the early passagesin the drawing composition. Evidence suggests thatthe fixative was mainly applied to increase the tooth forlater applications of conte crayon and to prevent thesmudging of lower layers. Typically, the layers of shellacare extremely thin and based on visual appearance and autofluorescencesuggestive of decolorized shellac. The useof an ultraviolet (UV) illumination attachment on the FTIRmicroscope made positioning of the aperture a very efficientprocess that helps locate the shellac. While anecdotalinformation has suggested conte crayon used by Seuratcontains wax, FTIR, UV fluorescence and PyGC-MS did notdetect any. These scientific findings accurately reflectinformation contained in Nicholas-Jacques Conte’s originalpatent from 1795.

Algumas reflex?es sobre a qualifica??o do trabalho a partir da sociologia francesa do pós-guerra
Tartuce, Gisela Lobo Baptista Pereira;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302004000200004
Abstract: this paper undertakes a reflection on the historical and analytical pertinence of the concept of work qualification, in a social context that has replaced it by the notion of skill. it thus tries to understand it from the theoretical point of view, based on the thought of georges friedmann and pierre naville (especially that of the latter), the fathers of sociology of work in post-war france. qualification began to become central in this country and in this period: it became not only an aspect of the political and social practice but also - and maybe for this very reason -, the object par excellence of this arising subject matter. this means that qualification has a social and interpretative history, and only through it may we decree or not the end of its analytical operationality. the text arguments that the contributions of naville, the precursor of the so-called "relativist" vision of qualification - that which conceives it as socially constructed -, are fundamental to think the debate "qualification" versus "skill".
