Abstract: The influence of xenobiotic compounds on environment and on living organisms has been reported as an imminent public health problem. Among them we can list the contamination by Alkanes present in petroleum, hydrocarbons and organic contaminant substances from industrial effluents. Also, heavy metals are of particular interest because of their persistence in the environment contaminating the food webs. Among the innovative solutions for treatment of contaminated water and soil is the use of biological materials like living or dead microorganisms. Yeasts exhibit the ability to adapt to extreme condition such as temperature, pH and levels of organic and inorganic contaminants that make them a potential material to be used to remediate contaminated environment application. The goal of this work was to search for yeast isolates capable to use n-hexadecane (alkane hydrocarbon) as a primary carbon source and for those able to tolerate high concentration of lead (Pb) within a collection of 90 isolates obtained from the Sao Paulo Zoo composting system. The isolated yeast strains were identified by mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) and by sequencing of the ribosomal DNA (18S and D1/D2) conserved regions. We found that the collection bares 23 isolates capable of utilizing n-hexadecane and one which is able to tolerate high concentration of lead (Pb) with a high biosorption index compared to the reference yeast strains (BY4742, PE-2, CAT-1 and BG-1). These results confirm the initial hypothesis that the Sao Paulo Zoo composting is the source for diverse yeasts species with biotechnological application potential.

Abstract: CD44 is a cell adhesion molecule closely related to tumor progression in humans. In canine mammary tumors, little information is available about this molecule. The aim of this study was to analyze, by immunohistochemistry, the behavior of this molecule in canine mammary tumors with or without the presence of metastasis. The dogs were divided in groups without metastasis (G1) and with metastasis (G2, with subsets A—original neoplasia and B—metastatic neoplasia). Tumors were classified according to the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. The cells were counted whereby the plasma membrane and/or cytoplasm are stained. There was a significant increase in the number of cells immunostained for CD44 in the metastastic masses (G2B) as compared to groups G1 and G2A. It is concluded that in metastatic mass there was a significant increase in CD44 receptors, probably important for biology of the mammary tumor of dogs.

Abstract: We propose to estimate the TDI by constructing a probability interval of the difference in paired measurements between devices, and thereafter, we derive a tolerance interval (TI) procedure as a natural way to make inferences about probability limit estimates. We also describe how the proposed method can be used to compute bounds of the coverage probability. The approach is illustrated in a real case example where the agreement between two instruments, a handle mercury sphygmomanometer device and an OMRON 711 automatic device, is assessed in a sample of 384 subjects where measures of systolic blood pressure were taken twice by each device. A simulation study procedure is implemented to evaluate and compare the accuracy of the approach to two already established methods, showing that the TI approximation produces accurate empirical confidence levels which are reasonably close to the nominal confidence level. The method proposed is straightforward since the TDI estimate is derived directly from a probability interval of a normally-distributed variable in its original scale, without further transformations. Thereafter, a natural way of making inferences about this estimate is to derive the appropriate TI. Constructions of TI based on normal populations are implemented in most standard statistical packages, thus making it simpler for any practitioner to implement our proposal to assess agreement. In an agreement assay, it is of interest to evaluate the degree of agreement between different methods (devices, instruments or observers) used to measure the same characteristic. Thus, the closeness between the measures of the methods must be evaluated. Different procedures for assessing agreement with continuous measurements have been proposed and these can be classified under two terms [1]: (1) unscaled summary indices based on absolute differences; and (2) scaled summary indices which translate absolute differences into more meaningful values ranging between -1 (perfectly reve

Ciência Rural , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84782001000100023
Abstract: canine transmissible venereal tumor (tvt) is a round cell neoplasm occurring on the external genital mucosa of male and female dogs. transmission is by cell implantation during coitus, licking, or other interaction between an affected dog and a susceptible host. metastasis of the tumor rarely occurs. this report describes an unusual presentation of tvt with intraocular involvement and inguinal lymph nodes metastasis. the subject was a six-year-old, intact, male, brazilian terrier dog with a history of abnormal masses in the right eye, penis and several subcutaneous nodules in the inguinal area. histopathological examination of the eye specimens as well as cytologic examination of penile mass and subcutaneous nodules revealed similar findings. the examination revealed round cells containing a large nuclei with prominent, central located nucleoli and a pale cytoplasm containing few small, clear round vacuoles. histologically, the subcutaneous nodules in the inguinal area were lymph nodes. the diagnosis of tvt with intraocular involvement and lymph nodes metastasis was based on clinical, cytologic and histopathologic findings.

Abstract: Mammary tumors are very common in female dogs and its prognosis varies significantly according to the tumor invasion degree. Myoepithelial layer destruction is considered a differential diagnosis parameter of in situ from invasive lesions in human breast cancer. Aiming to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of p63, a protein specifically expressed by myoepithelial cells of mammary gland, and its correlation with p53 expression, 10 adenomas and 20 carcinomas with and without metastasis of canine mammary gland were studied. There was no significant difference between adenomas and carcinomas for both proteins staining, however, the percentage and continuity of staining was lower in metastatic carcinomas. There was no correlation between p53 and p63 expression, but the higher values of p53 staining were found in carcinomas, according to previous studies. Results showed that p63 is specifically expressed also in myoepithelial cells of canine mammary gland. However, in order to ensure its use as a prognostic marker in canine mammary tumors, further studies involving a higher number of samples should be conducted.

Abstract: The use of fossil fuels has been greatly increased since the eighteenth century with advent of the industrial revolution. Currently, the use of these fuels is responsible for, on average, 80% of energy generation in human society, producing large emission of pollutant gases and particulate material. Thus the transport sector is a major source of air pollution worldwide. This issue causes serious damages to the environment through phenomena such as acid rain, global warming and photochemical smog. Moreover, the emission of pollutants is also related to damages in human health. Brazil is a country with great territorial dimensions and its transport array is eminently by road, so it is a major consumer of fossil fuels, such as diesel, which has been producing serious environmental and social problems. Thus, this paper presents an analysis of the emission of gaseous pollutants and particulate matter from the transport sector (buses and trucks), gaseous pollutants such as NO2 and SO2 were detected in ppmv concentrations using electrochemical sensors. The composition constituents of the particulate materials emitted in diesel combustion and their respective concentrations were determined by X rays fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). The identified elements were: S, Fe, Si, Ca, Zn, P, Ni, Cr, Ti, Mn and Cu.
