Abstract: adult organisms of pseudoeurycea mixteca were found in a cave of about 80 meters deep at a xerophile vegetation in the tehuacan valley, puebla. the specimens were located under stones in humid sand. previous reports of this species were from pine-oak forest in northwestern oaxaca, living under the bark of logs or inside rotten logs. this new record increases the known distribution of the species and habitat type.

Abstract: Se encontraron organismos de Pseudoeurycea mixteca en el interior de una cueva a 80 metros de profundidad en una zona de vegetación xerófila en el Valle de Tehuacán, Puebla. Los ejemplares fueron hallados bajo piedras en la arena húmeda. Los registros previos de P. mixteca corresponden únicamente a vegetación de bosque de pino-encino en el noroeste de Oaxaca donde vive bajo la corteza de árboles caídos o en troncos podridos. Este nuevo registro incrementa el área de distribución y el tipo de hábitat para la especie. Abstract: La industria de la acuariofilia es un mercado que se encuentra en expansión. Aun cuando no existe información exacta respecto a cifras y valores del comercio internacional, se calcula que esta industria genera ganancias sobre US$ 300 millones con una tasa de crecimiento anual del 14%. De esta cifra, aproximadamente US$ 28 a 44 millones corresponden a peces ornamentales de origen marino. No obstante, una de las controversias que ha generado el comercio de especies marinas es que casi la totalidad de los organismos son capturados del medio natural, y en muchos casos de manera ilegal. En este trabajo se realiza una revisión que incluye: historia de la acuariofilia, principales especies ornamentales de importancia comercial, comercio internacional, riesgos del comercio de especies marinas, estrategias de conservación y situación actual en México. En este último tema, se abordan aspectos que describen el desarrollo y perspectivas del mercado de la acuariofilia marina y algunas iniciativas de instituciones académicas y privadas dirigidas al desarrollo de la acuicultura sostenible de especies marinas de ornato de importancia comercial en el país. The aquariums industry is a trade that is expanding. Although there is no accurate information regarding the figures of the aquarium industry in the international scenario, it is estimated to generate revenues over US$ 300 million with an annual growth rate of 14%. Approximately US$ 28 to 44 million of this amount is generated by the ornamental marine fish trade. However, the trade in marine species has aroused controversy regarding the extraction of almost all traded marine organisms from wild populations and, in many cases, illegally. This paper presents a review that includes: the ornamental marine fishkeeping history, the species of commercial importance, the international trade scenario, risks of the aquarium industry, conservation strategies, and the current situation of this trade in Mexico. The last section focuses on describing the development and market prospects of the marine aquarium trade. Additionally, some initiatives from academic and private institutions aimed at developing sustainable aquaculture on ornamental marine fish species of commercial importance in Mexico are provided.
Methane production by treating vinasses from hydrous ethanol using a modified UASB reactor

Abstract: Background A modified laboratory-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was used to obtain methane by treating hydrous ethanol vinasse. Vinasses or stillage are waste materials with high organic loads, and a complex composition resulting from the process of alcohol distillation. They must initially be treated with anaerobic processes due to their high organic loads. Vinasses can be considered multipurpose waste for energy recovery and once treated they can be used in agriculture without the risk of polluting soil, underground water or crops. In this sense, treatment of vinasse combines the elimination of organic waste with the formation of methane. Biogas is considered as a promising renewable energy source. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum organic loading rate for operating a modified UASB reactor to treat vinasse generated in the production of hydrous ethanol from sugar cane molasses. Results The study showed that chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was 69% at an optimum organic loading rate (OLR) of 17.05 kg COD/m3-day, achieving a methane yield of 0.263 m3/kg CODadded and a biogas methane content of 84%. During this stage, effluent characterization presented lower values than the vinasse, except for potassium, sulfide and ammonia nitrogen. On the other hand, primers used to amplify the 16S-rDNA genes for the domains Archaea and Bacteria showed the presence of microorganisms which favor methane production at the optimum organic loading rate. Conclusions The modified UASB reactor proposed in this study provided a successful treatment of the vinasse obtained from hydrous ethanol production. Methanogen groups (Methanobacteriales and Methanosarcinales) detected by PCR during operational optimum OLR of the modified UASB reactor, favored methane production.

Abstract: this study assessed the survival of acropora palmata fragments under controlled experimental conditions over a period of four months in a recirculating artificial seawater system. the coral fragments (5-9 cm long) were fixed in aragocrete and placed in an aquarium under a photoperiod of 12 h light: 12 h dark, using 150 w lamps (10000 k). the survival rate was 58%. fragment mortality occurred mostly during the first month, which was associated to the process of bleaching stress as a result of fragmentation. these results showed that the conditioning in captivity of a. palmata using artificial seawater has potential as a viable tool to help the conservation of this species.

Abstract: Se estimó la tasa de producción de huevos (TPH) para Centropages furcatus en la Bahía de la Paz, Baja California Sur, México, durante 2003. Esta especie es una de las más abundantes y frecuentes de los copépodos en la zona. La estimación en carbono de la producción de huevos fue máxima en verano (1.20 ± 0.7 μg C hembra-1 d-1) y mínima en primavera (0.58 ± 0.42 μg C hembra-1 d-1). La mayor longitud del prosoma (LP) fue registrada en verano (1.15 ± 0.05 mm) y la menor en oto o (1.01 ± 0.04 mm). No hubo correlación significativa entre LP y TPH con la concentración de clorofila a (Cl a) ni con la temperatura superficial del mar (TSM). En invierno, primavera y verano la TSM fue menor a 23.2 °C, a diferencia de oto o que presentó TSM mayores a 27 °C. En relación a la Cl a, tanto en invierno, primavera y oto o los valores fueron menores a 1 mg m-3, mientras que en verano fueron mayores a 3 mg m-3. Aunque la correlación no fue significativa (p >0.05) entre los parámetros biológicos y las variables ambientales, la especie presentó valores altos de LP y TPH en verano cuando la TSM fue baja y la concentración de Cl a fue la más alta. Chl a was low (<1 mg m-3) in winter, spring and autumn, whereas in summer it was high (>3 mg m-3). Although the correlation was non significant between the biological parameters and the environmental variables (p> 0.05), the species showed high values of LP and TPH in summer when SST were low and the concentration of Chl a was high.
