Health (Health) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/health.2014.621343
Abstract: Background: Investigating self-perception of oral health among the elderly may contribute towards changing public health and assistance policies in the area. Methods: The present study assessed the oral health status (tooth decay, need for treatment, periodontal status, use of and need for dental prosthesis, soft tissue alterations and self-perception of oral health) of 102 elderly people from two community groups in Fortaleza, Ceará State, Brazil. Results: Mean age was 69.9 years and 82.4% were female. Mean DMFT was 30.17 with a predominant missing component; 63.7% were edentulous. Regarding prosthesis, 29.4% and 67.6% of elderly patients did not use upper and lower dentures respectively, while 66.7% and 78.4% required some type of upper and lower prosthesis respectively. Among valid sextants, 44.3% presented dental calculus and 34.3% presented loss of attachment from 6 to 8 mm. Soft tissue alterations were found in 58.8%. Despite of precarious clinical conditions and dental treatment needs, good oral health perception was found (49%), as well as satisfaction with the appearance of teeth and gums (60.8%). Conclusion: Subjects displayed unsatisfactory oral health conditions, accumulated over time and resulting from the lack of policies favoring this age group. There is a need for oral rehabilitation that enables the recovery of function and esthetics among the elderly, restoring their self-esteem and improving social interaction.

Revista Brasileira em Promo??o da Saúde , 2010,
Abstract: Objective: To conduct the translation to Portuguese and the cross-cultural adaptation to Brazilian culture of a questionnaire to evaluate the aesthetic concerns of 12-yr-old children and their parents. Methods: The original questionnaire, which investigates the level of the child′s distress, worry, and smile avoidance in the last two months, was not validated to any other languages but the ones it was originally developed for (English and Spanish). This report had the following design: translation, back-translation, validation by a panel of experts and testing of the final version with 50 pairs of parents/children, using self-report or interview. Results: No relevant discrepancy amongst versions was found; only minor adjustments were made to adapt the questionnaire to the target population′s diverse educational background, and no item from the original questionnaire has been removed. Simple vocabulary and short phrases were used in order to facilitate the application to children and adults in a location in the Northeast and another in Southeastern Brazil. In the pre-testing, Brazilians easily understood the questions. When the questionnaire was self-applied, there was difficult in reading by children, non-response from parents and unanswered items by both groups. Conclusion: The Child’s and Parent’s Questionnaire about Teeth Appearance was adequately translated into Brazilian Portuguese and adapted to the cultural context of both locations, and it is suggested using it as an interview.

Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X1999000400017
Abstract: the transient analytical solutions for water distribution from point source are dependent on the soil parameters a from gardner equation, i.e., k(h) = ks eah and the linearization parameter k=dk(q)/dq assumed constant in the derivation of these solutions. errors in obtaining these parameters result in failure of the solutions. the objective of this work was to evaluate the parameter a and k at different locations in the wetted volume under an isolated and a cyclic infiltration process. matric potential data were collected in several positions of the wetted volume in two situations: (i) beginning of irrigation until steady-state, i.e., only during infiltration process, and (ii) during two irrigation cycles involving infiltration and redistribution processes. the results showed that a and k parameters vary at different locations of the wetted volume related to the dripper according to the water regime at these locations. the use of inverse method for obtaining these parameters requires matric potential data from infiltration and redistribution during at least two irrigation cycles.

Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: The aim of this study is to understand what are the collective actions of architecture practitioners when grouping floor plan designs. The understanding of how professionals and students solve this complex problem may help to develop specific programmes for the teaching of architecture. In addition, the findings of this study can help in the development of query mechanisms for database retrieval of floor plans and the implementation of clustering mechanisms to aggregate floor plans resulting from generative design methods. The study aims to capture how practitioners define similarity between floor plans from a pool of available designs. A hybrid evolutionary strategy is used, which takes into account the building's functional program to generate alternative floor plan designs. The first step of this methodology consisted in an online survey to gather information on how the respondents would perform a clustering task. Online surveys have been used in several applications and are a method of data collection that conveys several advantages. When properly developed and implemented, a survey portrays the characteristics of large groups of respondents on a specific topic and allows assessing its representation. Several types of surveys are available; e.g. questionnaire and interview formats, phone survey, and online surveys, which can be coupled with inference engines that act and direct the survey according to respondents' answers. In the present study, the survey was posed as an online exercise in which respondents had to perform a pre-defined task, which makes it similar to running an experiment in an online environment. The experiment aimed to understand the perception and criteria of the target population to perform the clustering task by comparing the results with the respondents' answers to a questionnaire presented at the end of the exercise.

Although prostate changes are common diseases among old dogs, clinical examination of the gland is fre quently overlooked in most veterinary clinics. The aim of this study was to describe the microscopic alterations in dog prostates obtained from Zoonosis Control Center of Aparecida de Goiania, Brazil. Specimens harvested from 50 prostates were embedded in paraffin and sections stai ned with H&E. Gram stained fragments were also scre ened. Changes were observed in 100% of the cases 31 (62%) animals had prostatitis, 25 (50%) benign prostate hyperplasia, 4 (8%) dysplasia and 1 (2%) adenocarcino ma. No bacteria were identified in Gram preparations. As different diseases were occasionally observed in one pros tate, the number of processes diagnosed is actually higher than the amount of glands harvested. We concluded that prostate disease is common, particularly in stray dogs, thus prostate examination should be performed as a routi ne in dogs, even in the absence of clinical signs, and also that dogs, similar to men, manifest elevated frequency of non-bacterial prostatitis. KEY-WORDS: Dog, BPH, non-bacterial prostatitis, prostate.
