Italian Journal of Agronomy , 2011, DOI: 10.4081/ija.2011.e3
Abstract: Agricultural researchers widely recognise the importance of sustainable agricultural production systems and the need to develop appropriate methods to measure sustainability on the farm level. Policy makers need accounting and evaluation tools to be able to assess the potential of sustainable production practices and to provide appropriate agro-environmental policy measures. Farmers are in search of sustainable management tools to cope with regulations and enhance efficiency. This paper presents the outcomes of applications to organic and integrated farming of an indicator-based framework to evaluate sustainability of farming systems (Agro-Environmental Sustainability Information System, AESIS). The AESIS was described together with a review of applications dating from 1991 in a previous paper. The objective of the present paper is to present the AESIS application to organic and integrated farming systems in Val d’Elsa (Tuscany) and discuss how it is adapted for application to ordinary farms. The AESIS is organised into a number of environmental and production systems. For each system, environmental critical points are identified with corresponding agro-environmental indicators and processing methods. Possible solutions to sustainability issues, and critical points of relevance to the agricultural sector of the local economic and agro-ecological zone, are formulated by including an experimental layout, identifying indicator thresholds and by defining management systems with corresponding policy measures. Alternative solutions are evaluated by calculating and measuring the relevant indicators. The outcomes of the AESIS applications are discussed with specific relevance to the operational adoptability of AESIS to ordinary, agri-touristic farms managed with the organic and the integrated production method, respectively. The AESIS framework proved to be sufficiently flexible to meet the requirements for ordinary farm applications while keeping a holistic perspective and considering pedo-climatic and production factors on different spatial scales.

Abstract: background: magnifying colonoscopy brought the possibility of precise histologic diagnosis of colorectal lesions through their surface appearance. despite the high accuracy of magnifying colonoscopy it is a specialized and expensive equipment not available in most medical centers. due to these reasons the use of conventional colonoscopy with chromoscopy has been raised because this produce can reproduce most of the information previously obtained by magnifying colonoscopy. aim: to determine the role of high resolution colonoscopy and indigo carmine chromoscopy for differential diagnosis between neoplastic and non-neoplastic colorectal lesions through measurements of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values. patients / methods: it was performed a prospective study. seventy-four colorectal polyps were evaluated in 54 patients. a high resolution olympus exera cfq 160l colonoscope was used. after the identification of the lesions, they were dyed with indigo carmine 0,2% and classified according to kudo's classification by a single observer. after resection, the polyps were submitted to histopathological examination. results: the endoscopic findings were compared to histopathologic results. the accuracy of the method was 79,7%, sensibility of 88,8%, specificity of 55%, positive predictive value of 84,2% and a negative predictive value of 64,7%. conclusion: we can conclude that we must be careful to apply high resolution colonoscopy and chromoscopy because adenomatous lesions can be misdiagnosed as non-neoplastic.

Stancato, Giulio Cesare;Silveira, Adriana Parada Dias da;
Bragantia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87052010000400022
Abstract: plantlets of micropropagated anthurium are subjected to one of the most critical steps in plant tissue culture, which is the transfer in vitro to ex vitro. the use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (amf) that would promote greater growth and survival of plantlets can be promising and viable for micropropagated plants grown in protected environment. the objective was to monitor the physiological responses of anthurium cv. eidibel plantlets under the influence of fertilizer n: p: k and / or inoculation of glomus intraradices. in a first stage, the plantlets in vitro were transferred to trays of polypropylene, with a pine bark substrate, with the treatments: control, fertilization (osmocote 15:10:10), amf inoculation and fertilization, and only inoculation. the plantlets remained for 100 days, when they were transplanted into one l pot plant, containing the same substrate. the control plantlets were divided in the treatments: control / control, control / fertilization, control / fertilization and inoculation and control / inoculation, while the plantlets of other treatments remained the same. at this stage, the plantlets were kept for 450 days, and analyses made were: shoot, root, leaf and total dry matter, leaf area, shoot / root ratio, total dry matter/ total fresh matter ratio and mycorrhizal colonization. the mycorrhization of micropropagated anthurium, at the stage of acclimatization and plantlet production, did not show the same positive effect of n: p: k fertilization in promoting plant growth.

Abstract: estimulation of autotrophy in in vitro plantlets could be achieved through changes in the culture medium, or by changing the traditional hermetic caps by one that could allow gas exchanges between the culture and the environment. besides that, the use of lamps with distinct emission spectrum irradiaction has propitiated successful results. this work was carried out aiming to evaluate the either the combined or the single action of some factors that can induce autotrophy on in vitro a. andraeanum cv. eidibel plantlets. 3 sucrose concentrations were used: 0, 15 and 60 mm and for each one, to kinds of flasks according to the cap ventilation: under (0.038 l.h-1) and without ventilation. flasks were kept under cold light fluorescent lamps or under gro-lux lamps. at the end of the experiment showing the highest shoot dry mass treatment was 60 mm, under ventilation and gro-lux, and the treatment which accumulate root dry mass to a lesser extent were 0 mm with ventilation and cold light and 15 mm without ventilation and cold light. in average, treatments with higher sucrose content in the culture medium, that is, 60 mm, under gro-lux lamps, presented the highest chlorophyll a, b and total contents, than those under cold lamp. steps of carbohydrates metabolism could be associated with the total soluble sugars (sucrose and reducing sugars) levels, highlighting the steps where nutrient requirements were higher, showing the role of the plantlets sink.

Abstract: the objective of this study was to analyze, according to lauren's classification, the prevalence of a hystological type ? intestinal or diffuse ?, among gastric carcinomas. the authors reviewed 650 hystological sections from a hospital in the city of s?o paulo during a 30-year period, following the definitions of the above classification. after the 50's the intestinal type proved to be prevalent, reaching 62.74% of all cases of gastric cancer in the 80's, and showing a ratio of intestinal/diffuse type of 1.71. other large series of cases whose diagnoses followed the nomenclature of who hystological classification showed to be inadequate for this study. the prevalence of the intestinal type of gastric carcinoma seems to disagree with the decreasing rates of mortality due to this disease in the state of s?o paulo, in the same period. further studies, such as the analysis of incidence rates and prevalence of helicobacter pylori, among others, are necessary for a better understanding of these data.
