Feasibility of a novel vermitechnology using vermicast as substrate for activated sludge disposal by two epigeic earthworm species  [PDF]

Abstract:

This study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of vermicomposting by using vermicast as the substrate for the stabilization of municipal activated sludge, called hereafter as direct vermistabilization, in which the pre-treatment and bulking materials required in previous practices were all omitted. For this purpose, two epigeic earthworm species, namely Eisenia foetida and Bimastus parvus, were inoculated into substrate for composting fresh dewatered activated sludge. Direct vermistabilization resulted in significant reductions in pH, TOC, C/N ratio and the content of heavy metals, as well as increases in EC, total N, total P and total K in the final vermicast. Moreover, both Eisenia foetida and Bimastus parvus showed faster growth rate and higher cocoon production. The results of this study suggest that the direct vermistabilization has the advantages of being simple, cost-effective and efficient, and can thus be used as a feasible vermicomposting approach to convert fresh dewatered activated sludge into a valuable product for agricultural use. The results also suggest that Bimastus parvus can be used as a new potential candidate for vermicomposting of municipal activated sludge.

Comprehensively Surveying Structure and Function of RING Domains from Drosophila melanogaster

Abstract: Using a complete set of RING domains from Drosophila melanogaster, all the solved RING domains and cocrystal structures of RING-containing ubiquitin-ligases (RING-E3) and ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme (E2) pairs, we analyzed RING domains structures from their primary to quarternary structures. The results showed that: i) putative orthologs of RING domains between Drosophila melanogaster and the human largely occur (118/139, 84.9%); ii) of the 118 orthologous pairs from Drosophila melanogaster and the human, 117 pairs (117/118, 99.2%) were found to retain entirely uniform domain architectures, only Iap2/Diap2 experienced evolutionary expansion of domain architecture; iii) 4 evolutionary structurally conserved regions (SCRs) are responsible for homologous folding of RING domains at the superfamily level; iv) besides the conserved Cys/His chelating zinc ions, 6 equivalent residues (4 hydrophobic and 2 polar residues) in the SCRs possess good-consensus and conservation- these 4 SCRs function in the structural positioning of 6 equivalent residues as determinants for RING-E3 catalysis; v) members of these RING proteins located nucleus, multiple subcellular compartments, membrane protein and mitochondrion are respectively 42 (42/139, 30.2%), 71 (71/139, 51.1%), 22 (22/139, 15.8%) and 4 (4/139, 2.9%); vi) CG15104 (Topors) and CG1134 (Mul1) in C3HC4, and CG3929 (Deltex) in C3H2C3 seem to display broader E2s binding profiles than other RING-E3s; vii) analyzing intermolecular interfaces of E2/RING-E3 complexes indicate that residues directly interacting with E2s are all from the SCRs in RING domains. Of the 6 residues, 2 hydrophobic ones contribute to constructing the conserved hydrophobic core, while the 2 hydrophobic and 2 polar residues directly participate in E2/RING-E3 interactions. Based on sequence and structural data, SCRs, conserved equivalent residues and features of intermolecular interfaces were extracted, highlighting the presence of a nucleus for RING domain fold and formation of catalytic core in which related residues and regions exhibit preferential evolutionary conservation.

Abstract: The relation between continental drift and phylogeny of termites were discussed in this paper. The authors think, the time of originof the ancestor of Isoptera and the original termites propably originated later than the Blattariae or this two orders had originated in the same geologic period. It is considered that the groups of ancestor of Isoptera and the original termites had originated at the Pangaea. Both of them multiplied and cvolved at the broadly united continents before the time of Cretaceous, and the differentiation of the families of Isoptera had successionly completed in that geologic period, but not proportionally dipersed. Many evidences show that some groups had hardly existed in adverse environment at the northern land, but most of the members of the groups existed at the southern end of the world as well. Since then, the Pangaea splited apart and drifted for different directions.The ancestors of the families of the termites were carried by the separate continents to different regions of the world and the original termites evolved in each region, and then formed into the characteristic cntomofauna of Isoptera on there.

Abstract: 文章报道了等翅目蛮白蚁属Microtermes Wasmann和钩白蚁属Ancistrotermes Silveastri的地理分布和云南新种。作者认为,该二属类群随着与非洲分离的印度板块在始新世中期与西藏连接后,逐渐形成现今包括我国云南等地域的地理分布。文中描述了蛮白蚁属2新种——曼庄蛮白蚁Microtemes mangahuangensis,勐捧蛮白蚁M.mengpengensis;并首次报道了分布在我国云南的钩白蚁属及2新种——河口钩白蚁Ancistrotermes hekouensis,孟连钩白蚁A.menglianensis。
