Abstract: Over a decade ago, Ruddle [1] pointed out the great potential value of local knowledge as an information base for local management of marine environments and resources, especially in the tropics, where conventionally-used data were usually scarse to non-existent. A number of subsequent studies have documented and recognized the value of local knowledge to conservation and management of fisheries [2-12].A pragmatic view of the relevance of fishers knowledge to fisheries management has been expressed by Ames [8]: "fishermen and their subjective, anecdotal descriptions have a pivotal role to play in the development and function of sustainable fisheries (.......) fishermen are, in fact, the only available source of local, historical, place-based information". Nevertheless, lack of sound management practices have led to the collapse of particular types of fisheries in some parts of the world, and, as pointed out by Meewig et al. [13], interest in participatory approaches in resource management in part reflects the failure of top-down, centralized approaches to manage natural resources.Definitions of artisanal, subsistence fisheries have traditionally focused on the capture and trade of food fish. However, a growing number of examples of fish species being traded worldwide for purposes other than alimentary (e.g., as pets, remedies, souvenirs) has revealed the existence of an international and multi-faceted commerce, supported by a diffuse (and generally poorly quantified) harvesting of a number of species.Those forms of exploitation have received little attention when compared with the trade of animals for alimentary purposes [14]. In the marine realm, the scarcity of data has rendered the identification of key elements for conservation and management, and the assessment of impacts difficult.Seahorses (Hippocampus spp.) are among the few non-food marine fishes whose trade has been documented, initially in Asia [15], where the demand for those fishes was primarily for use

Fatores determinantes da anemia em crian?as
Osório, M?nica M.;
Jornal de Pediatria , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0021-75572002000400005
Abstract: objective: to present a review about the main determining factors of anemia in children under 5 years old. source of data: information was used from articles published in indexed national and international scientific journals, technical books and publications from international organizations. summary of the findings: anemia constitutes the world's nutritional problem of the greater magnitude, and children under 5 years old represent one of the highest risk population groups. as with any public health problem, the origin of anemia is multi-causal and thus in this article the attempt is to interpret its direct or indirect relation with possible determinant factors and the main concordant or discordant findings in epidemiological studies. among these factors are the social and economic conditions, the conditions of child health care, the child's nutritional state, the presence of morbidity, food consumption and biological factors. the role of the diet is emphasized with respect to the consumption and bioavailability of iron, and age of the child as the main determinants. conclusions: bearing in mind the magnitude of the problem and the breadth of its risk factors reviewed in this study, the implementation of urgent prevention and treatment measures for iron-deficiency anemia becomes necessary. it is important to stress that a single strategy may have little success if other measures are not taken simultaneously; the role of nutritional education being relevant, together with other implemented actions. children under 2 years old and children who live in rural and deprived areas should be priorities in programs to combat anemia.

Abstract: the mangrove vegetation along the margins of estuaries is an important habitat for fish, serving as feeding, shelter and nursery zones. the present work describes the fish fauna associated to mangrove roots at the pacoti river estuary. a total of ten visual censuses of 90 minutes each were conducted, yielding the number of 671 fish counted, with an average of 0.74 counts/minute. the fishes were identified pertaining to 22 species from 18 different families. all the studied species are originally marine, although the samples were mainly carried out during the rainy season. gerreidae and lutjanidae were the more representative families. the species lutjanus alexandrei, lutjanus jocu and bathygobius soporator were present in all censuses and the first two were also the most abundant, with 48 and 17% of the total counts, respectively. taking into account size estimations of the fish, it was verified that mangrove roots are inhabited mainly by juveniles of both species, indicating the use of this habitat as a nursery area. however, in the least complex sampling site, specimens of genus lutjanus were sought in higher quantities, comprinsing all size classes, thus suggesting the abundance of roots in pacoti river might not influence the abundance of sheltered fishes. another important observation is that almost 70% of the species present in the mangrove roots are typical of reef habitats, indicating the existence of strong connections between these two ecosystems. the results emphasize the importance of this habitat for ichthyofauna conservation to coastal areas. in addition, studies regarding to fish recruitment, reproductive and trophic patterns are needed, especially to those two main important species described herein.

Abstract: in this paper we have tested the hypothesis that the foreign direct investment (fdi) flows into brazil have a moving average pattern in line with predictions from the theory. we have modeled the fdi series in us dollars using a univariate model, the auto-regressive integrated moving average (arima) model. the results confirmed the hypothesis derived from the theory that, after correcting for detected outliers, there is a moving average pattern in fdi inflows into brazil as there is quite a dynamic series with relatively rapid adjustment towards equilibrium values. the patterns found can be used in univariate modeling to generate forecasts of the future values of the series. we present a forecast for the series and discuss the issue of forecast accuracy using the theil coefficient.
Meningioma do nervo óptico simulando progress?o de dano axonal glaucomatoso: relato de caso

Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492008000500023
Abstract: to report a case of an optic nerve sheath meningioma located at the optic canal area mimicking the progression of a glaucomatous axonal damage. a 60-year-old female patient developed progressive visual field loss and enlargement of the optic disc cup in the left eye while in treatment for primary open-angle glaucoma. because of the rapid progression of axonal loss, the asymmetry of the visual field defect and the fact that intraocular pressure had been under control, a compressive optic neuropathy was suspected. a computerized tomography scan of the orbit was normal but a high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an optic nerve sheath meningioma located at the optic canal area. compressive lesions of the anterior visual pathways are uncommon causes of optic disc cupping but should be considered in patients suspected of or undergoing treatment for glaucoma that present with atypical progression of visual loss.
Aspectos oftalmológicos da síndrome da hipertens?o intracraniana idiopática (pseudotumor cerebral)

Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-72802008000400008
Abstract: pseudotumor cerebri is a syndrome of increased intra-cranial pressure without a space-occupying lesion or ventriculomegaly in a patient with normal level of conscience and normal cerebrospinal fluid constitution. the terminology for the disorder has changed over the years in accordance with advances in diagnostic technology and insights into the disease process. when no secondary cause is identified, the syndrome is termed idiopathic intracranial hypertension. patients are not uncommonly seen by ophthamologists since they present with papiledema, double vision and visual loss, a frequently severe and irreversible complication. in this paper we review the diagnostic criteria and the ophthalmic manifestations of this condition. we also emphasize the importance of the ophthalmlogist in the diagnosis and monitoring of visual function during the medical treatment of this condition as well as in the in the event of surgical treatment performed using optic nerve sheath decompression.

Abstract: This study presents a compilation of results obtained by several research groups on the mutational analysis of β thalassemia in Portugal and in Morocco, and compares the mutation/haplotype associations in both countries. We use the β thal mutations and haplotypes as genetic markers to address the question of gene flows through the Mediterranean basin area into the Iberian Peninsula and Portugal since the Phoenician trade up to recent times.
