Abstract: Non-atrophic active chronic gastritis (ACG) is characterized by the presence of H. pylori in the gastric epithelium, known to be one of the first steps that precede progression to gastric adenocarcinoma. Inactive chronic gastritis (ICG) suggests that the patient has H. pylori gastritis, but this diagnosis is rarely made in routine histopathology. Clinical manifestations associated with H. pylori infection are potentially due to differences in virulence between strains; however, it is unclear if the progression of ACG to ICG depends on the H. pylori strain. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of the virulence factors of H. pylori found in patients with ACG and ICG, and its influence on the development of ICG. A significant association was observed between H. pylori detection by histological examination and the activity of gastritis (p < 0.01). Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) (>1 year) was reported by 28.6% of the ACG group and 42.5% of the ICG, while no evidence of association between long-term use of PPI and decreased inflammation was found in the patients studied. The genes cagA, cagE and virB11 were statistically associated with ACG (p = 0.01, p < 0.001 and p = 0.002, respectively). In the vacAs1 allele groups, ACG was associated with the most virulent group (p = 0.0015), while ICG was associated with the less virulent group (p < 0.001). The rate of co-infection was significantly higher in ICG than in ACG cases (p = 0.02). In conclusion, this study points to the role of virulent strains of H. pylori in the non-resolution of gastritis.

Case Reports in Clinical Medicine (CRCM) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/crcm.2015.43025
Abstract:
Introduction: Advances in prenatal imaging studies have allowed early diagnosis of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), although neonatal mortality remains at high levels (60% survival). Despite advances, this study found delayed diagnosis, demonstrating subdiagnosis, possibly caused by lack of resources and/or prenatal diagnostic failure. Case Report 1: Infant, 4 months and 22 days old, dyspneic, cyanotic, with fever and vomiting for 3 days, treated as pneumonia. After the second chest radiography, a right CDH was revealed. Surgical correction was performed and removal of Meckel’s diverticulum was surgical findings. The patient was discharged on the 10th days after admission. Case Report 2: Infant, 11 months and 3 days old, distended abdomen, with fever and dyspnea for 2 days, treated as pneumonia. After the second chest radiography, a left CDH was revealed. The patient was submitted to surgery, intestinal loop incarceration without necrosis was observed, and the correction of CDH was performed. The patient was discharged on the 7th day after admission. Discussion: Three cases, between July 2012 and July 2013, were diagnosed at Dom Malam Hospital; 2 Cases of CDH, with delayed diagnosis, showed incidence of 66.66%. Delayed diagnosis of these patients with initial hypotheses of pneumonia demonstrated high risk, emphasizing the importance of diagnosis research through observation of the clinical course, the correct imaging interpretation, in order to establish early diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract: psychotria l. (rubiaceae) is the genus with the most heterostylous species in the angiosperms. the objective of this study is to describe floral biology, phenology, reproductive system, and pollinators of psychotria poeppigiana müll. arg. the terminal inflorescences are capitate with red bracts and yellow flowers, and presented two different morphs: pin and thrum, characterized by hermaphroditic flowers with different lengths of styles and opposed position of the anthers (reciprocal herkogamy). dimorphism was also observed in the size of anthers, pollen grains and stigmatic surfaces. controlled pollination revealed self-incompatibility and intramorph-incompatibility at the level of stigma and style. wasps, butterflies and hummingbirds visited the flowers, especially in early morning. according to the frequency of visits and an efficient transport of pollen between floral morphs, the hummingbird thalurania furcata was the main pollinator. little nectar (max. 8μl) was produced during the opening of the flowers (5:00-7:00h). because of vegetative reproduction the species forms clumps.

Abstract: the objective of this experiment was to evaluate green manures and their effects in the sugarcane yield using no-tillage system (spd). the experiment was carried out at campos dos goytacazes, rio de janeiro state, from december/2003 to july/2005. the experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications. the treatments were jack bean (canavalia ensiformis), velvet bean (mucuna aterrimum) and sun hemp (crotalaria juncea) under no-tillage and spontaneous vegetation in conventional tillage (pc) (control). the sunhemp 35 days after emergency (dae) showed higher rate of soil cover 87% and 92 dae produced 17.852 kg ha-1 of dry matter, 41%, 78% and 407% superior to jack bean, velvet bean and spontaneous vegetation, respectively, besides overcoming them in accumulation of k, mg, s, zn and fe. jack bean and velvet bean showed the highest content of n in the aerial part than other covering plants. jack bean showed higher contents of p and ca than sun hemp and velvet bean. the spontaneous vegetation showed the highest content of k in aerial part in relation to the cover plants. the legumes accumulated higher amounts of n and cu than the spontaneous vegetation. sun hemp and the jack bean accumulated 66% more of p in the aerial part than velvet bean. the spd using green manures contributed significantly to sugarcane, yield that was 135.863 kg ha-1, being 37% superior to pc with the spontaneous vegetation.
Biologia reprodutiva de Palicourea macrobotrys Ruiz & Pavon (Rubiaceae): um possível caso de homostilia no gênero Palicourea Aubl.
Coelho, Christiano P.;Barbosa, Ana Angélica A.;
Brazilian Journal of Botany , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-84042003000300013
Abstract: the genus palicourea aubl. (rubiaceae) is restricted to the neotropics and includes approximately 200 species of shrubs and small trees. flowers are mostly distylous, colored, odorless and tubular in cymose inflorescences and usually pollinated by hummingbirds. homostyly is a rare condition in the genus. the objective of this study is to characterize the reproductive biology of palicourea macrobotrys ruiz & pavon, the pollination biology and identifying the breeding system. the study was carried out in the panga ecological station, uberlandia, mg (19°11'10" s and 48°24'35" w), from may 2000 to may 2001. the species bloomed from december to june, and fruits were produced in march. it presented inflorescences with ca. 60 hermaphrodite, pentamerous, isostemous and homostylous flowers. flowers opened between 5:00 and 7:00 h and last 14 hours. nectar production was small (6.86 μl) with a mean concentration of sugars of 18%. the floral visitors were ants, small bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, which were active mainly in the morning, between 7:00 and 12:00 h. the hummingbird thalurania furcata was considered the main pollinator due to its visiting behavior and frequency of visits. the species is self-compatible, and the pollen tubes reached the ovary four hours after self and cross pollinations.

Revista Brasileira de Ciência Avícola , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-635X2006000100003
Abstract: the production system using cages is a highly polemical issue in europe, because of the space restriction imposed to laying hens. it is considered that the cage system might compromise important comfort movements, welfare and egg quality. this study evaluated egg quality and welfare of two strains of hens housed in a conventional system (battery laying cages) or litter system with nest and perches, and submitted to heat stress or comfort conditions. two groups of 20 birds (10 hy-line w36 and 10 hy-line brown) were submitted to two environmental conditions (26°c and 60% rh or 35°c and 70% rh) and two housing systems (cages or litter) in the early production phase. egg quality was analyzed based on egg weight, eggshell thickness, specific gravity, and haugh units. yolk and shell contamination by salmonella sp was also assessed. a significant (p<0.05) reduction in quality parameters was observed in eggs produced by laying hens under heat stress, mainly in the birds housed in cages.

Revista Brasileira de Ciência do Solo , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-06832009000500029
Abstract: detailed studies of pedologic characterization, as well as of relationships between pedology, geology and geomorphology are important for the comprehension of the soil distribution in a landscape. the objective of this study was to evaluate the pedomorphogeological relationships in the chapadas elevadas of the distrito federal, by the chemical, physical, mineralogical and geochemical characterization of the soils found in this landscape compartment. two representative top-sequences of the pedologic distribution were selected in this geomorphologic unit, whose soils were formed from metasedimentary rocks of the grupo paranoá, represented by red oxisols (latosols), yellow-red oxisols and cambisols. the physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of the oxisols of the two top-sequences were mostly similar. the color variation in the oxisols was due to the differentiated fe oxide mineralogy - predominantly hematite in lv and goethite in lva. however, the icp-aes analysis showed similar fe2o3 levels in oxisols, indicating a material of origin (metasedimentary rock) with similar geochemical composition. the goethite formation in lva was related to the geomorphological position of development, on the edges of the plateau, where the water table oscillation resulted in the formation of a lithoplintic horizon, with consequently deficient drainage conditions. the cambisols were chemically similar to oxisols, due to the source material, consisting of pre-weathered sedimentary rock. the pedomorphogeological relations showed that the soil distribution in the chapadas elevadas of the distrito federal is linked to the geomorphologic evolution and regional geology.
