Abstract: this paper discusses the brazilian academic production on chemical education. the main source of information is the annual meeting of the brazilian chemical society (rasbq) covering the period 1999-2006. all the papers presented by the division of chemical education of the rasbq were reviewed to permit a discussion about the development of the area in brazil. this bibliographical revision comprises the following aspects: year of presentation, brazilian region and institution of production, scholastic level encompassed by the study, the kind of academic work (or research type) and thematic focus of the study.

Abstract: objective: to estimate the prevalence of breastfeeding among teenage (younger than 20 years old) and adult mothers of six-month-old children and to identify factors associated with weaning. methods: a cross-sectional study of a sample of 237 teenage mothers and 239 adult mothers living in the city of montes claros, brazil, whose babies were six-month-old at the time of the interview was carried out. mothers answered a questionnaire at home. to assess factors associated with weaning, univariate, mantel-haenszel, and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. results: breastfeeding prevalence in children aged 6 months was 71.3% among teenage mothers and 77.4% among adult mothers (crude or=1.38; p=0.128), but after adjusting for control variables the role of adolescence added considerable weight to weaning. factors associated with weaning were: marital status, mother's occupation after delivery (both showed interaction with teenage years), difficulty to breastfeeding in the first days after delivery, and exclusive breastfeeding at the time of hospital discharge. conclusions: the observed interactions with teenage in regard to weaning suggest that motherhood in this age group has unique features that should be further investigated.

Abstract: OBJETIVO: Estimar a prevalência de amamenta o entre m es adolescentes (menores de 20 anos de idade) e n o-adolescentes aos seis meses de vida da crian a e identificar fatores associados ao desmame. MéTODOS: Estudo transversal feito por amostragem, com entrevista aplicada no domicílio a 237 m es adolescentes e 239 n o-adolescentes, residentes na cidade de Montes Claros, MG, com filhos de seis meses de idade no momento da entrevista. Para avaliar fatores associados ao desmame, realizou-se análise univariada, seguida de bivariada de Mantel-Haenszel e regress o logística múltipla. RESULTADOS: A prevalência de amamenta o aos seis meses de vida foi de 71,3% entre as m es adolescentes e 77,4% entre as n o-adolescentes (OR bruta =1,38; p=0,128). O papel da adolescência no desmame ganhou importancia com o ajuste para variáveis de controle. Os fatores associados ao desmame foram: estado conjugal, atividade fora do lar após o parto (esses dois apresentaram intera o com adolescência), dificuldade para amamentar nos primeiros dias e aleitamento exclusivo ao peito na alta hospitalar. CONCLUS ES: As intera es observadas com a adolescência em rela o ao desmame sugerem que a maternidade nessa faixa etária tem peculiaridades que a mantém como objeto especial de estudo.

Abstract: the case-study method of instruction is increasing in popularity and instructors of various scientific disciplines are adopting this method for their courses. its effectiveness suggests that there is a need for such resources to be used in chemistry education. in this paper we describe this method in detail and present our use of cases in a scientific communication course offered to undergraduate chemistry students at the university of s?o paulo. the description of the method and the example of its use may be helpful for faculty members who wish to explore new ways to engage students more deeply in their learning and to reinvigorate their own teachig practice.
A eficácia da sacarose no alívio de dor em neonatos: revis?o sistemática da literatura

Abstract: objective: to present a review of empirical studies published from 1993 to 2004 on the efficacy of sucrose solution for relieving pain in neonates. sources of data: information was obtained from the medline/psycinfo/isi web of science/lilacs and scielo databases by searching for "sucrose", "pain", "newborn" and "neonate". summary of data: sucrose solution has demonstrated efficacy in pain relief during puncture procedures on samples of preterm and fullterm neonates. the recommendation is to administer oral sucrose, to the front of the tongue, 2 minutes before the painful procedure. other non-pharmacological interventions, such as human breastmilk via nasogastric tube, non-nutritional suckling and being held at the breast, also demonstrated synergic analgesic effects when administered in association with sucrose. the majority of studies demonstrated a positive pain relief effect with a single 2 ml dose at 25%. conclusions could not be drawn on the best repeat administration scheme; in the few studies that did provide an indication, the dose was 0.1 ml at 24%. the analgesic pain relief effect promoted by the sucrose was observed through altered behavioral responses, facial activity and crying. heart rate underwent larger reductions as a result of sucrose administration during painful procedures than any of the other physiological responses. conclusions: the efficacy of a single dose of sucrose for the relief of acute pain neonates is well documented in the literature. however, there are not yet definite conclusions on the scheme of use for repeated doses of sucrose.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to assess early development of pre-term and low birth weight infants. forty- two infants born under 34 weeks of gestational age and 1.500 grams were assessed through developmental and behavior child scale (dbcs) in the first year of life. they have been participated at developmental follow-up program for pre-term infants in clinical hospital of faculty of medicine (usp), since neonatal intensive care hospitalization period. negative psychosocial events in familiar environment, and maternal conceptions and expectations related with child development were evaluated through interview. performance of children at 6 and 11 months of post conception age (corrected for gestational age) was classified as good or excellent, identifying about 35% of infants with risk or delay scores. in spite of psychosocial adversity events in familiar environment, positive child development in the first year of life was observed, related with posite maternal expectations about child development and adherence to a follow-up program.

Abstract: the aim of the present study was to compare the development of 15 children at the age of 6 years born pre-term (pt) with the development of 15 children born full-term (at). the development was assessed by interview with their mothers and psychological assessment. pt children showed a significantly longer time of hospitalization, made more use of bottle feeding, their mothers used more medication during pregnancy, parents were more fearful of taking care of the baby. comparing to ft children, pt showed delay in acquiring behaviors such as sitting and walking. there were no differences between groups in the intellectual level. in both groups behavior problems were found. more complaints regarding stomachaches and the fear of dealing with new situations were found in pt in comparison with ft children.

Abstract: the aim of this study is to compare the developmental history, learning and behavior of 20 pre-term and very low birth-weight children (vlb) and 20 full- term children at eight- ten years old. data collection included interviews and the child behavioral scale administered to the mothers and the raven test to the children. signs of delay in psychomotor behaviors acquisitions and predominance of the left hand use in the vlb compared to the control group were detected. in the school phase, most of the children of both groups presented average intellectual level and were attending regular schools. in the vlb group there was a significantly higher proportion of school failure than in the control group and there were 20% of children with hearing impairment. authough both groups had signs of behavior problems, the vlb group showed more respiratory problems, enuresis, school-refuse, agitation, impatience and attachment to the mother than school children from ribeir?o preto.

Abstract: the exploratory behavior within a playing setting of 20 preterm newborn infants, with low weight at birth, corrected chronological age of 10 months, is evaluated. infants were organized in groups which were differentiated according to their development risks. the sample was divided into two groups according to the infants' denver-ii test performance, or rather, 8 infants with delayed development risks (vlbw-r) and 12 infants with normal development (vlbw-n). systematic observation of infants' response latency and exploratory behaviors with standard toys was carried out. results showed similarities between the groups with regard to response latency time in toy exploration, gazing direction and vocalization. however, vlbw-n infants looked significantly more at the observer, smiled more and remained more stable in the sitting position than vlbw-r infants. these behaviors facilitated toy exploration.

Abstract: the combination of cyclic voltammetry and on line mass spectrometry, called differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (dems), is already a well established method for on line identification and quantitative detection of the products and intermediates of electrochemical reactions. this article aims to show the principles of the method and how this technique have been used to study electrochemical problems such the electrocatalytic oxidation of organic molecules, as methanol and ethanol, at noble metal electrodes.
