Abstract: streamflow forecasting in a water system is one of the techniques used to reduce the impact of the uncertainties of the climate on administration of the water resources. that technique can be considered as one of the principal challenges related to the integrated knowledge of the climatology and of the hydrology of the river basin. the aim of this work was to model the non-linear relationship between rainfall and streamflow in the piancó river basin, in the paraíba semiarid, using the technique of artificial neural networks (ann). here the ability of ann was evaluated to model the rainfall-runoff process on a monthly basis. during training of the ann, the network architecture and weights initialization influence were considered. at the end of the training the best architecture was chosen, to model the streamflow monthly mean in the studied basin, based upon the performance of the model. the ann architecture that produced the better result was rc315l with values for the determination coefficient, efficiency coefficient and standard estimate error (see) equal to 92.0, 77.0% and 8.29 respectively.

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2015.65060
Abstract: This study aimed to validate a set of indicators that can contribute to producing a diagnostic about the living conditions of the elderly population in the cities, serving as a powerful tool for decision making. The methodology adopted was the adaptation of the “Diagnostic content validation model”, Fehring, published in 1987. The system of indicators was based on the concept of active ageing and its determinants. Of the 38 indicators analyzed by the experts as to their appropriateness and relevance for the diagnosis and monitoring of the performance of cities to be friends of the elderly, 17 were considered critical, 19 supplementary and 2 were considered inadequate and irrelevant, being excluded from the system. Then the reliability of the questionnaire through Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was calculated. The indicators proved to be useful in classifying age-friendly cities worldwide.

Abstract: research carried out in the municipalities of campina grande and s?o jo?o do cariri prove the viability of the production of drinking water by the formation of the dew on cold surfaces of conventional refrigeration systems or on external surfaces of pet bottles containing ice. the experimental results presented here show that the cooling of air can produce enough quantity of water to minimize the consequences of shortage of drinking water in the semiarid zone of the brazilian northeast region. the experiment based on direct contact between the air and the cold surface of the refrigeration system produced dew at a rate of 1.23 l h-1 m-2. to obtain a liter of dew, the system consumes, on average, 0.75 kwh of electrical energy. the obtained results are satisfactory, considering that the experimental equipment used is quite simple.

Journal of Electromagnetic Analysis and Applications (JEMAA) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jemaa.2012.42007
Abstract: We present numerical studies on the switching characteristics of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with modulation in the third order nonlinear index of refraction along it’s length. The FBG is operating in a continuous wave regime (CW). This study was done taking into account the possible asymmetry brought by the non harmonic modulation of the nonlinearity, leading to different reflection and transmission characteristics, that depend on the direction of propagation along the modulated nonlinear FBG. This phenomenon may be useful for applications like an optical isolator. It was found that for a set of values of the modulation parameter, the FBG can exhibit multistable states. The numerical studies were obtained starting from the coupled-mode equations solved from the coupled-mode theory and simulated using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method.

Abstract: due to the environmental conditions verified in the state of acre, characterized by the occurrence of high temperatures and precipitation, cultivars traditionally used by the producers present low yield and poor quality. the aim of the present work was to evaluate the behavior of the new lettuce cultivars available in the market, in terms of agronomic characteristics and yield, in the climatic and soil conditions of rio branco. two trials were accomplished in the embrapa acre experimental farm, in a dark red claysoil, of loamy texture. the first from may to july 1996 (dry season) and the second from december 1996 to february 1997 (rainy season). the cultivars babá de ver?o, brisa, carolina ag-576, elisa, lucy brown, marisa ag-216, piracicaba 65, regina 71, tainá, simpson, vanessa and ver?nica were evaluated. 'regina 71' and 'elisa' were only included on the dry season trial. the experimental design was a randomized block, with three replications. during the dry season, the cultivars simpson, lucy brown and regina 71 presented the largest average weights (373; 362 and 341 g, respectively) and commercial yields (49.8; 48.3 and 45.5 t/ha, respectively). in general, the cultivars with smooth leaves with or without head presented larger nematoid (meloidogyne javanica) attack index, when compared to the curly type ones. in the rainy season trials, the cultivars marisa ag-216, ver?nica, lucy brown, brisa, tainá and piracicaba-65 presented the greatest average weights and commercial yields. however, the obtained averages were very inferior to that verified in the trials of the dry period, varying from 164 to 198 g for average weight, and from 21.9 to 25.9 t/ha for commercial yield. of those cultivars tested on the dry season, regina 71 (butter head/less firm head) and carolina (butter head) ag-576 stood out among the butterhead types, while ver?nica, marisa ag-216 (loose leaf/wavy and frilled leaves) were the best among the loose leaf types, obtaining good yield. Prevalence of hepatitis C and B virus infection in patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy in Brazil: a pilot study
Reis, Francisco J.F.B.;Viana, Mateus;Oliveira, Manoela;Sousa, Tiago A.;Paraná, Raimundo;
Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-86702007000300004
Abstract: the idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (idmc) is a disease of the cardiac muscle characterized by systolic dilation and/or dysfunction of one or both ventricles, symptoms of congestive heart failure and risk of early death. several studies in animal models and in humans have supported the hypothesis of the viral infection as initial event in the immunopathogenesis of the ventricular dilation. the objective of this study was to correlate the presence of hepatitis c virus chronic infection and idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, comparing samples of cases with idcm with paired controls with chagas-type specific dilated cardiomyopathy and ischemic-type specific dilated cardiomyopathy. only 2.9% (1/34) of idcm patients were hcv carriers, which strongly argue against this hypothesis. therefore, based on our results, there is no justification for investigating hcv in patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy diagnosis.
