Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2007001500012
Abstract: highly active antiretroviral therapy (haart) has led to a substantial increase in the survival of people living with aids, despite heterogeneities among individuals from different socioeconomic strata. the present paper analyzes aids deaths in brazil during a period in which haart became a key treatment regimen, exploring the hypothesis that "race or color" defines one dimension of socioeconomic inequality in brazil. aids mortality, stratified by gender and "race or color", was calculated using data from the national mortality system. the rates were highest among individuals classified as "black" and lower among those classified as "mixed-race", with a continuous increase among the later from 1999 to 2004 for men and women. among individuals classified as "white", mortality rates remained stable among men, but not women. median age at death among "mixed-race" individuals was lower for both men and women. differential trends according to gender and "race or color" were highlighted by the present study, indicating the pressing need to further explore the underlying factors that might explain different mortality rates in a context of universal access.

Abstract: objective:to evaluate the impact that family health program (fhp) team training and active surveillance have on the detection of tb cases in a low-income community in the city of fortaleza, brazil. methods: the study was performed in an area with approximately 25,000 inhabitants, served by a health care center with five fhp teams, in the city of fortaleza, brazil. although all of the teams were trained, active surveillance was carried out only in one of the areas (area 5). we compared the number of tb cases detected in each of the five areas prior to and after the intervention. we also compared the number of tb cases detected in area 5 to the number of those detected in the other areas, as well as to the citywide number of reported tb cases in fortaleza, within the same period. results: the number of tb cases detected in the area studied increased from 1 in 2002 to 22 in 2004 (p < 0.05). there was no significant difference between the number of tb cases in area 5 and that observed for each of the other four areas (p > 0.05). there was a significant increase in the number of tb cases detected in the area studied when compared to the city as a whole (p < 0.05). conclusions: training and sensitization of fhp professionals were effective in promoting an increase in the number of tb cases detected in a low-income community.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of yeasts, pseudomonads and enteric bacteria in the oral cavity of patients undergoing radiotherapy (rt) for treatment of head and neck cancer. fifty patients receiving rt were examined before, during and 30 days after rt. saliva, mucosa, and biofilm samples were collected and microorganisms were detected by culture and polymerase chain reaction (pcr). the most prevalent yeasts in patients submitted to rt were candida albicans, c. tropicalis, c. krusei, c. glabrata and c. parapsilosis. citrobacter, enterobacter, enterococcus, klebsiella, proteus, and pseudomonas were the most frequently cultivated bacteria. before rt, targeted bacteria were cultivated from 22.2% of edentulous patients and 16.6% of dentate patients; 30 days after rt, these microorganisms were recovered from 77.8% edentulous and 46.8% dentate patients. by pcr, these microorganisms were detected from all edentulous patients, 78.1% of dentate patients. the presence of gram-negative enteric roads and fungi was particularly frequent in patients presenting mucositis level iii or iv. modifications in the oral environment due to rt treatment seem to facilitate the colonization of oral cavity by members of family enterobacteriaceae, genera enterococcus and candida.

Health (Health) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/health.2014.621325
Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare the scores of maternal self-efficacy for child diarrhoea prevention, between intervention and control groups, according to sanitary, social and demographic characteristics. A randomised clinical trial was carried out on 163 mothers of children under 5 years old. Data collection was conducted during two months, at two different moments (M0 and M1); at the moment M0 only the intervention group watched the educational video to promote self-efficacy for child diarrhoea prevention; at M1 (two months later) the scale was applied to both groups. In the intervention group, greater mean self-efficacy scores were obtained compared with the control group. The following variables showed statistically significant associations (p < 0.05) with maternal self-efficacy: age 35 or over; high school education; working outside the home; residence with 4 to 5 people; house not of brick or mortar; public refuse collection; piped water supply; consumption of mineral water; and public sewerage network. After use of the video “Diarrhoea: you can prevent it”, the maternal self-efficacy increased, proving that this strategy is able to assist the nursing staff in educational practices.
