Abstract: Introduction: Cochlear Implants are important for individuals with severe to profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Objective: Evaluate the experience of cochlear implant center of Otorhinolaryngology through the analysis of records of 9 patients who underwent cochlear implant surgery. Methods: This is a retrospective study performed with the patients records. Number 0191.0.107.000-11 ethics committee approval. We evaluated gender, etiology, age at surgery, duration of deafness, classification of deafness, unilateral or bilateral surgery, intraoperative and postoperative neural response and impedance of the electrodes in intraoperative and preoperative tests and found those that counter-indicated surgery. Results: There were 6 pediatric and 3 adult patients. Four male and 5 female. Etiologies: maternal rubella, cytomegalovirus, ototoxicity, meningitis, and sudden deafness. The age at surgery and duration of deafness ranged from 2 - 46 years and 2 - 18 years, respectively. Seven patients were pre-lingual. All had profound bilateral PA. There were 7 bilateral implants. Intraoperative complications: hemorrhage. Complications after surgery: vertigo and internal device failure. In 7 patients the electrodes were implanted through. Telemetry showed satisfactory neural response and impedance. CT and MRI was performed in all patients. We found enlargement of the vestibular aqueduct in a patient and incudomalleolar malformation. Conclusion: The cochlear implant as a form of auditory rehabilitation is well established and spreading to different centers specialized in otoaudiology. Thus, the need for structured services and trained professionals in this type of procedure is clear.

Abstract: Introduction: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare, highly vascular, and histologically benign tumor, generally observed in male adolescents. It shows very aggressive behavior due to local invasiveness and is associated with various symptoms. Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma originates in the sphenopalatine forame, causing epistaxes and nasal obstruction. Objective: To retrospectively describe our experience in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. Scientific drawing: Retrospective, descriptive study conducted after approval from the Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Sergipe (protocol 0114.0.107.000 -11). Methods: We analyzed findings in 20 patients who underwent surgery between 2004 and 2011. Factors analyzed include patient age and gender, symptoms, stages, treatment, length of surgery, intraoperatory bleeding, postoperative need for nasal tampons, hospitalization time, complications, and tumor recurrence. Results: Patients were aged 10-29 years. All patients were treated surgically, including 17 who underwent endoscopic surgery. The mean operation time was 120 min, and the mean bleeding volume was 300 mL. Seventeen patients required clamping of the external carotids and tumor embolization. Conclusion: Endoscopic surgery alone or with other conventional techniques was safe for the treatment of angiofibromas of different stages.

Abstract: two experiments were conducted aiming to evaluate translocation and compartmentation of znso4 and znedta applied on leaves of coffee and bean seedlings previously grown under zn sufficiency or deficiency in nutritive solution in greenhouse. the treatments applied were 14mmol l-1 znso4, znedta and test without zinc applied on leaves. in both species, znso4 was more retained on leaf cuticle, indicating cuticular zinc retention to be an important barrier in its uptake. the nutritional status of bean plants had a significant effect upon zinc utilization when it was applied on leaves. bean plants enhanced zinc acquisition more than coffee seedlings. plants grown in zinc deficient solution showed a higher efficiency in znedta translocation. coffee seedlings grown in zinc deficient solution showed higher zinc retention in the stem, suggesting high zn2+ affinity with negatively charged groups in the conductive vessels.

Abstract: conflicting results are reported in the literature concerning the germination capability of papaya seeds submmitted to long-term storage at low moisture content and temperature levels. this study was undertaken to evaluate the viability of papaya seeds of the uenf-caliman 01 cultivar dried under shade to 12.6% w.b moisture and subsequently dried at 37 oc in a cabinet drier to 7.7% w.b. the germination and vigour of these seeds were evaluated after drying and after four and eight months of storage in a sealed, moistureproof container at 15 oc. seed vigour, initially of 46%, increased to 77% after four months of storage. seed germination after drying to the two moisture levels was 75%, increasing to 87% and declining to 66% after four and eight months of storage, respectively. results indicated that papaya seeds exhibit signs that prompt their classification as orthodox seeds, which are capable of extending their viability by the simultaneous reduction of mositure content and temperature during storage.

Abstract: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (als) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the corticospinal tract. als functional rating scale (alsfrs) is a questionnaire that quantifies motor deficits, while diffusion tensor imaging (dti) evaluates the integrity of fibers through the fractional anisotropy (fa). in the present study, seven als patients were evaluated by alsfrs and immediately submitted to dti, getting fa values in the following regions: cerebral peduncle (pc), internal capsule (ci) and the white matter under the primary motor cortex (m1), secondary motor cortex (m2) and somestetic cortex (si). a control group was constituted by twelve healthy individuals. fa values in patients were significantly lower when compared with controls, with a tendency to higher reductions in the right hemisphere and more inferior regions. interestingly, fa values were reduced in somestetic area. no correlation was observed between symptoms duration and fa values. despite the correlation observed between alsfrs scores and degeneration in pc and ci, our results suggest that this subjective scale is not a good parameter for the evaluation of the structural damage in encephalic portions of the corticospinal tract.
