Some considerations about the ecology of Triatominae
Noireau, Franois;Carbajal-de-la-Fuente, Ana L.;Lopes, Catarina M.;Diotaiuti, Lileia;
Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0001-37652005000300006
Abstract: observations on the ecology of silvatic triatominae are still fragmentary, principally because target species in control process are almost exclusively domestic. report of silvatic species invading human dwellings must lead research to be focused on their original ecology, in order to assist in understanding their process of domestication and devising strategies for surveillance.
A Scientometric Evaluation of the Chagas Disease Implementation Research Programme of the PAHO and TDR

PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases , 2013, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pntd.0002445
Abstract: The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) is an independent global programme of scientific collaboration cosponsored by the United Nations Children's Fund, the United Nations Development Program, the World Bank, and the World Health Organization. TDR's strategy is based on stewardship for research on infectious diseases of poverty, empowerment of endemic countries, research on neglected priority needs, and the promotion of scientific collaboration influencing global efforts to combat major tropical diseases. In 2001, in view of the achievements obtained in the reduction of transmission of Chagas disease through the Southern Cone Initiative and the improvement in Chagas disease control activities in some countries of the Andean and the Central American Initiatives, TDR transferred the Chagas Disease Implementation Research Programme (CIRP) to the Communicable Diseases Unit of the Pan American Health Organization (CD/PAHO). This paper presents a scientometric evaluation of the 73 projects from 18 Latin American and European countries that were granted by CIRP/PAHO/TDR between 1997 and 2007. We analyzed all final reports of the funded projects and scientific publications, technical reports, and human resource training activities derived from them. Results about the number of projects funded, countries and institutions involved, gender analysis, number of published papers in indexed scientific journals, main topics funded, patents inscribed, and triatomine species studied are presented and discussed. The results indicate that CIRP/PAHO/TDR initiative has contributed significantly, over the 1997–2007 period, to Chagas disease knowledge as well as to the individual and institutional-building capacity.
Comparative biology of the two sister species of Triatominae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae)
Carbajal de la Fuente, Ana Laura;Cunha, Vanda;Rocha, Nathanielly;Lopes, Catarina Macedo;Noireau, Franois;
Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0037-86822010000100004
Abstract: introduction: triatoma pseudomaculata and t. wygodzinskyi (hemiptera: reduviidae: triatominae) are two brazilian vectors of chagas disease. the first is an arboricolous species in sylvatic environment and considered a vector of t. cruzi in peridomestic structures; the second, a rupicolous species in the wild environment of no epidemiological importance. in order to test the assumption that sister species share biological traits, comparative studies of their development cycle and blood ingestion were conducted. methods: eggs laid by five field females of each species were randomly selected. the nymphs were observed daily and fed on mice weekly. the time required to pass through the different stages to adulthood was recorded in days. the triatomines were weighed individually before and after feeding. the mortality rate according to each nymphal stage was calculated. results and conclusions: analysis of the results shows that they display only minor biological differences even though they exhibit a distinct ecology. this suggests that the biological traits are important criteria to determine the relationship between species.
Financing of the Mexican health system (1980-2007) and equity

Pratiques et Organisation des Soins , 2010,
Abstract: Aim: At the moment, Mexico is immersed in several crises due in its majority to the economic stagnation. In order to get out from the crisis, Mexico needs to diminish inequities in the access to health services. This last, could be obtained through a greater health public expenditure. Several studies have been proved that an increase in the population health levels causes a greater people productivity and economic growth. This work approaches this idea, and tries to give an advice about the use of the public expenditure.Methods: This task is carry on by analyzing the econometric relationships between the public expenditure on health, the index of income inequality, the gross domestic product per capita, and the rates of maternal and child mortality for the annual period of 1980 to2007.Results: The results points out that an increase in health public expenditure could ameliorate the income equity, and also diminish the rates of maternal and child mortality.Conclusion: Therefore, one would hope that a greater health public expenditure improves the equity of access to health services; this is it, because nowadays this access is financed to a large extent by out of the pocket expenditure. A greater access to the health services could raise the health levels, along with an increase in productivity and economic growth.Prat Organ Soins 2010;41(2):129-133
Competencia y precios en el mercado farmacéutico mexicano
Molina-Salazar,Raúl E; González-Marín,Eloy; Carbajal-de Nova,Carolina;
Salud Pública de México , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-36342008001000011
Abstract: the forms of market competition define prices. the pharmaceutical market contains submarkets with different levels of competition; on the one hand are the innovating products with patents, and on the other, generic products with or without trade names. innovating medicines generally have monopolistic prices, but when the patents expire prices drop because of competition from therapeutic alternatives. the trade name makes it easier to maintain monopolistic prices. in mexico, medicine prices in the private market are high -according to aggregated estimates and prices for specific medicines- which reflect the limitations of pharmaceutical market competition and the power of the trade name. the public segment enjoys competitive prices using the who strategy for essential medicines on the basis of the essential list.
Relationship between antennal sensilla pattern and habitat in six species of Triatominae

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762002000800010
Abstract: in order to determine if habitat similarity is correlated with a similarity of sensilla pattern, we analyzed six species of triatominae present in two biogeographic regions of brazil: the "caatinga" and the "cerrado". in broad terms triatoma infestans (cerrado) and t. brasiliensis (caatinga) are found in human domiciles, t. sordida (cerrado) and t. pseudomaculata (caatinga) colonize peridomestic habitats, and rhodnius neglectus (cerrado) and r. nasutus (caatinga) inhabit palm tree crowns. the number and distribution of four sensilla types (bristles, thin and thick walled trichoidea, and basiconica) were compared in these species. sexual dimorphism of sensilla patterns was noted in t. sordida, t. brasiliensis and t. pseudomaculata. a principal component analysis showed three main groups: (i) species that live in the palms, (ii) domiciliated species and (iii) those living in the peridomestic habitat. t. infestans almost exclusively domestic, was placed at the centre of the canonical map and some individuals of other species overlapped there. these results support the idea that the patterns of antennal sensilla are sensitive indicators of adaptive process in triatominae. we propose that those species that inhabit less stable habitats possess more types of sensilla on the pedicel, and higher number of antennal sensilla.

Abstract: The objective of the present study was to evaluate morphological variability in four populations of Chagasia fajardi using classic morphometry. Seven variables of the body were measured in specimens of Ch. fajardi from four biogeographical regions of Brazil, including three populations from the Atlantic Forest biome and one population from the Cerrado biome, were measured. Using analysis of variance (ANOVA), the diagnostic characteristic of the black band on the hindtarsus (Ta-III3) presented strong potential for demonstrating dissimilarity between populations, which were all different from each other. This was followed by the white band on the hindtarsus (Ta-III5) and the wing length (Wl), which showed the presence of two populations similar between themselves, but different from the others. However, multivariate analysis and UPGMA dendograms showed close proximity between populations 2 and 4 and between populations 1 and 3. Morphological variables of Ch. fajardi populations from different regions of Brazil are discussed.
