Campanhas eleitorais em sociedades midiáticas: articulando e revisando conceitos
Ribeiro, Pedro José Floriano;
Revista de Sociologia e Política , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-44782004000100004
Abstract: through a process of revision and articulation of concepts, this article seeks to elucidate the motives and meanings assumed in electoral campaigns as decisive moments of contemporary public democracies. the intensive use of research and marketing, centrality of mass media, professionalization of participants, and the personalization and usage of seductive and emotional publicity appeals emerge as the main characteristics of modern electoral campaigns; such aspects can only be correctly apprehended in their attributes and causal factors if special attention is given to the deep and significant changes that preceded them and brought about what we refer to here as "media societies". in such societies, sartorian video-politics take on a central role, even in the sense of the operationalization of the new form of representative government that prevails within them, in other words, that of public democracy. we conclude - thus going against the grain of those who see modernized campaigns as the work of apolitical politicians and opportunistic advertising specialists - that these new modes of political action represent just the tip of the iceberg: one that has as its basis societal, political and technological changes that run much deeper.
Organiza??o e poder nos partidos brasileiros: uma análise dos estatutos
Ribeiro, Pedro Floriano;
Revista Brasileira de Ciência Política , 2013, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-33522013000100007
Abstract: analyzing official party documents (rules and constitutions), the paper compares the internal decision-making structures of the four major parties in contemporary brazil: pmdb, psdb, pfl/dem and pt. covering the period 1995-2011, two analytical dimensions have been set in motion: a) the inclusiveness of the party' decision-making organization, which concerns to the possible grassroots influence in the decisions made by party elites; b) the degree of centralization, as regards the articulation, hierarchy and control among party branches in local, state and federal levels. the findings suggest that party elites are not inert: they have been acting incisively to change and adapt party organizations, mainly due to exogenous pressures.

Unfolded annealing molecular dynamics conformers for wild-type and disease-associated variants of alpha-synuclein show no propensity for beta-sheetformation  [PDF]

Abstract: Aggregation of alpha-synuclein leads to the formation of Lewy bodies in the brains of patients affected by Parkinson's disease (PD). Native human alpha-synuclein is unfolded in solution but assumes a partial alpha-helical conformation upon transient binding to lipid membranes. Annealing Molecular Dynamics (AMD) was used to generate a diverse set of unfolded conformers of free monomeric wild-type alpha-synuclein and PD-associated mutants A30P and A53T. The AMD conformers were compared in terms of secondary structure, hydrogen bond network, solvent-accessible surface per residue, and molecular volume. The objective of these simulations was to identify structural properties near mutation sites and the non-amyloid component (NAC) region that differ between wild- type and disease-associated variants and may be associated to aggregation of alpha- synuclein. Based on experimental evidence, a hypothesis exists that aggregation involves the formation of intermolecular beta sheets. According to our results, disease-associated mutants of alpha-synuclein are no more propense to contain extended beta regions than wild-type alpha-synuclein. Moreover, extended beta structures (necessary for beta sheet formation) were not found at or around positions 30 and 53, or the NAC region in any unfolded conformer of wild-type, A30P or A53T alpha-synuclein, under the conditions of the simulations. These results do not support the hypothesis that the mutant's higher propensity to aggregation results solely from changes in amino acid sequence leading to changes in secondary structure folding propensity.
Open-ended Tasks in the Promotion of Classroom Communication in Mathematics

International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education , 2012,
Abstract: Mathematics programmes in basic education are currently undergoing reform in Portugal. This paper sets out to see how teachers are putting the new guidelines for the teaching of mathematics intopractice, with particular emphasis on maths communication in the classroom. To achieve this, an experiment in teaching the topic 'Sequences and Regularities' with open-ended tasks, using a qualitative and interpretative approach, is reported. Data were collected during two class observations, from two interviews and by analysing the activities of the students. An exploratory task was chosen in the first lesson and a investigative one in the second. One month separated the two lessons, and during this time the teacher read and discussed texts on mathematics communication. Observation of the first lesson showed that the communication in the classroom was mostly focused on the teacher, which provided little student-student and student-class interaction. In the second observed lesson, the teacher changed the attention she paid to what each student said and did, encouraging the students to ask each other and encouraged student-class and the student-student communication.
Interpreta o gráfica do conceito de recta tangente a uma curva num ponto por professores estagiários

Revista Portuguesa de Educa??o , 2003,
Abstract: This paper reports a study conducted with 19 student-teachers. Our objective was to investigate how student-teachers graphically view the concept of tangent to a curve on a fixed point. An interpretative approach revealed that the student-teachers had a global perspective of the concept, which reflected a strong influence of the tangent to a circumference.
Interpreta o gráfica das derivadas de uma fun o por professores estagiários de Matemática

Revista Portuguesa de Educa??o , 2002,
Abstract: The Portuguese secondary school mathematics curriculum draws on results of research conducted in the Mathematics Education field to stress the importance of teaching mathematical concepts using, whenever possible, their different representations. Numerical, analytical and graphical approaches to the teaching of the derivative concept are indicated as essential to enhance conceptual meanings and relations. However, in general, students show a preference for analytical approaches in detriment of the graphical one, which may be the result of predominantly analytical teaching approaches. In this context, the goal of this study was to investigate mathematics student teachers difficulties in interpreting and relating the graphs of a function and those of their derivatives. A questionnaire about graphical representations of the derivative of a function was applied to 19 mathematics student teachers and an interpretative analysis of the results was performed.

Mudan as tecnológicas e produ o do espa o: considera es sobre desenvolvimento na escala local
Floriano J. Godinho de Oliveira
Investigaciones geográficas , 2003,
Abstract: The changes in industrial-production technological paradigms induce changes in all others aspects of production within important social organization sectors. Furthermore, all this implies important changes in today`s generation of spaces. This work aims to analyze two key phenomena which arise from this process and are related to the social production of space: a new industrial specialization, characterized by a higher spatial deconcentration, which in turn influences the creation of a new mode of organization of the economic activities; and a new way of interrelations between the hegemonic industrial and financial sectors in the national and local states during the development of new spaces. This article, therefore, will discuss some aspects characterizing the changes in production structures, in terms of temporal and spatial effects, as new ways of interrelation between the social sectors within the subnational territory of countries in the economic periphery. Emphasizing the conflicting local-versus-global aspects, we attempt to understand change processes in the productive structure as one of the key aspects in the organization of the space and territory, given that today socioeconomic activities are taking place on new bases. Along with this phenomenon, it is worth stressing that at a local scale, a space of privileged relationships for the definition of the location and installation of projects involves not only actions and analyses, but also the need to assign more importance to the identification of the relationships to be established.
