Open Journal of Forestry (OJF) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojf.2014.45052
Abstract: The research was aimed to estimate the carbon stocks of above-ground biomass (AGB) in Lesiolouna forest in Republic of Congo. The methodology of Allometric equations was used to measure the carbon stock of Lesio-louna tropical rainforest. The research was done with six circular plots each 40 m of diameter, with a distance of 100 m between each plot, depending on the topography of the site of the installation of these plots. The six studied plots are divided in two sites, which are: Iboubikro and Ngambali. Thus, in the six plots, there are three plots in Iboubikro site and three plots in Ngambali site. The results of this study show that the average carbon stock of aboveground biomass (AGB) in six plots was 170.673 t C ha-1. So, the average of carbon stock of aboveground biomass (ABG) in Iboubikro site was 204.693 t C ha-1 and in the Ngambali site was 136.652 t C ha-1. In this forest ecosystem, the high stock of carbon was obtained in Plot 3, which was in Iboubikro site. Plot 3 contains 20 trees and an average DBH of 24.56 cm. However, the lowest carbon stock was obtained in Plot 4, which was in Ngambali site. Also, Plot 4 contains 11 trees and an average DBH of 31.86 cm. The results of this research indicate that, the forests in the study area are an important carbon reservoir, and they can also play a key role in mitigation of climate change.
EURE (Santiago) , 2004, DOI: 10.4067/S0250-71612004009000002
Abstract: the discriminatory effects of globalization, in regard to countries, subnational regions and social groups, put new life into the debate over the convergence hypotesis, at the very base of the neoclassical growth theory. this paper offers an exhaustive revision of the empirical evidence regarding the convergence/divergence in per capita income level issue, both among countries as well as among subnational regions. it is concluded that after two a decades of convergence, in the sixties and seventies, from the eighties on there is a dominant trend towards polarization. this evolution seems to confirm the claims of endogenous growth theory and the new economic geography, in the sense that economic activity tends to agglomerate with a circular cause and effect logic, where it is already concentrated.
Diffusion-weighted sequence on MRI for the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
Pereira, Edgard;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2002000600003
Abstract: creutzfeldt-jakob disease (cjd) is a progressive and fatal dementing illness caused by a virus like agent called prion. currently, the definitive diagnosis can only be made through brain biopsy. given its potential transmissibility, it is paramount to have noninvasive and reliable means to detect the disease. the present case reports on a 63 year-old man with biopsy proven cjd, and evaluates the dependability of diffusion-weighted mri in this condition, stressing the importance of this particular sequence to its diagnosis.

Islam and Democracy
Edgard Weber
Revista CIDOB d'Afers Internacionals , 1998,
Abstract: Edgard Weber raises the issue of the societal statute given to an individual in different cultures. Evidently, an historic change has occurred. To illustrate this, he puts forth the case of the Muslim-Arabic culture, which grants the individual in society a statute different from that of other Western, Judaic-Christian cultures. The author centralizes his study on the concept of democracy and shows the distinctiveness of the Islamic conceptions of State and of the individual when compared to the West’s. Plainly, it would be erroneousto affirm the superiority of one system over the other. Rather, the issue is, before anything else, a matter of comprehending the function each system fulfills, of understanding how both may begin the next century in better conditions, and of seeing how these realizations may lead mankind towards a more universal dimension that banishes the demons of racism, exclusion, and war.
Cultures in the Globalization Process
Edgard Weber
Revista CIDOB d'Afers Internacionals , 2000,
Abstract: This first article situates cultures in the globalization process. The author raises the issue of whether economic, social and cultural exchanges and changes will lead to a rethinking of models of social integration. He feels that we are not dealing with a simple standardization that replaces the world’s diverse cultures but rather with a process that reveals to what extent the world is made up of coherent diversities that at present must deal with a new coherence.
Where is trust heading?
Edgard Weber
Revista CIDOB d'Afers Internacionals , 2003,
Abstract: Edgard Weber thinks of trust as a process which places the individual in a position which does not only take into account his or her group, his or her direct environment or that of his or her interest, but rather all humanity, regardless of origin, race or social class. In other words, a process that departs from that which is particular and takes an interest in that which is universal, like a horizon that retreats the more we approach it and as a process constructed with the Other. In this sense, three conditions underlie trust: hope, love, and faith.
Interculturality and Monotheism
Edgard Weber
Revista CIDOB d'Afers Internacionals , 1997,
Abstract: An individual’s identity is also defined based on the religious system to which he or she belongs. But who, among the young generation, truly knows, in the sense of the imaginaire, the monotheistic religious truth which Islamism and Christianity share ? It is important to see how each monotheism is built as a system of coherence. But coherence, identified with truth, excludes that of the Other. In this perspective, is religion a factor of union or division?

Abstract This paper focuses on the development of the role of dreams and visions in biblical literature, presenting different approaches to the theme according to the various biblical authors and their specific historical moments. It emphasizes the influence of prophetic literature and State actions in the relativization of the nature of dreams as theological justifications. It then analyzes the reception of this material by the rabbis who wrote the Talmud. We sustain that the rabbis follow the wider literary mainstream but express a general concern for the empire of visions within the religious scope. That is maybe due to tragic political experiences derived from their apocalyptic thought and to their natural tendency to oniric revelation. We conclude that the Talmud rabbis tried to solve the problem of the destabilizing role of dreams by simultaneously recognizing their importance and reducing or limiting their relevance as a religious revelation experience. Key words: Judaism; Jewish theology; Talmud; Dreams in the Bible; Dreams in the Talmud.
Qual era o judaísmo de Paulo?
Edgard Leite
