Abstract: an experiment on gentamicin toxicosis was carried out in 11 dogs. ten dogs received 10 mg/kg intramuscularly 3 times a day for 14 days and another dog the same dosage for 10 days. all dogs were euthanatized and necropsied at the 11th, 15th-19th, 21th, 27th, and 37th day of the experiment. main clinical signs were: loss of appetite, apathy, polyuria, polydpsia, diarrhea, vomit and oliguria. laboratory findings included enzymuria, cylindruria, azotemia and isosthenuria. gross lesions were restricted to the kidneys, these were pallid, swollen and soft. two dogs developed mild perirenal edema. histologically, tubular necrosis, restricted to the proximal convoluted tubules, was observed in the kidneys of 10 dogs. in the kidneys of all dogs there was regeneration of epithelial cells of those tubules; this change occurred mainly in the external cortex, varied from minimal to marked, and was associated to marked tubule dilation. at the 37th day of the experrment, the kidneys have their normal morphology restored. neither glomerular lesions nor extrarenal lesions related to uremia were observed. it is concluded that gentamicin was toxic to dogs when administered in the dosis and frequency stated above and induced acute renal tubular necrosis with subsequent variable degrees of regeneration.
O papel do sistema dopaminérgico na fobia social

Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-44462002000100012
Abstract: the role of the dopaminergic system on social phobia is described. evidence indicating dopaminergic dysfunction and the role of dopamine as a regulator of social activity are discussed.

Abstract: considering the prevalence of arterial hypertension among the elderly, the present study analyzes their perception of health needs, in a qualitative way, from focal groups with elderly users of family health units. data analysis was performed according to the hermeneutic-dialectical perspective and resulted in three nuclei of meaning: recognizing the possibility of having access to basic health care together with the desire to consume services of greater complexity and understanding the shortcomings of the state; attachment and welcoming as fundamental elements in the feelings of support and security and autonomy permeated by the tranquility to deal with the disease and the difficulties imposed by conditions inherent to the subjects' life style. therefore, it is understood that the family health strategy has been complying with its role in terms of the access to the healthcare system and regarding the professional-user attachment. however, health care continues to be centered on the disease rather than the individual.

A convenient method for the determination of moisture in aromatic plants
Pimentel Flávio A.,Cardoso Maria das Gra?as,Salgado Ana Paula S. P.,Aguiar Priscila M.
Química Nova , 2006,
Abstract: A method is proposed for the determination of the moisture content of aromatic plants. This method is based on the co-distillation of the starting material in a modified Clevenger apparatus with four organic solvents (toluene, cyclohexane, dichloromethane and carbon tetrachloride). The results were compared with those obtained by oven drying at 105 oC and steam distillation of the essential oil. The efficiencies of the methods were shown to be equivalent. The solvent distillation method was more practical, especially with respect to operating time (2 h).
Overview of ultrasound usage trends in orthopedic and sports physiotherapy

Critical Ultrasound Journal , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/2036-7902-4-11
Abstract: A brief survey was developed based on previous studies and was sent to 55 physical therapists with advanced competency in orthopedics and sports physiotherapy. The questions addressed general topics about the professional profile and ultrasound usage and dosage. Our data show the wide availability and frequent use of TUS in this sample of physical therapists. TUS is used in distinct musculoskeletal injuries and/or disorders in both acute and chronic conditions. Muscles, tendons and ligaments represented the major structures where TUS is used. Questions on the basic theory of TUS demonstrated a lack of knowledge of the ultrasound physiological effects as well as its interaction with biological tissues and TUS absolute contraindication.A Brazilian profile about the US usage and dosage in orthopedic and sports physiotherapy is presented and highlights the need for a continuous upgrading process and further research into its effects.Therapeutic ultrasound (TUS) is a popular electrophysical resource that generates mechanical energy which propagates through biological tissues [1,2]. In the physical therapist practice, TUS is used to treat soft tissue injuries, accelerate the wound's repair, augment fracture healing, on dwellings resolution and to solve some bone and circulatory injuries [3-5].Historically, TUS was used for the first time in the end of the 1940s and in the beginning of the 1950s [6-8]. During the following years, it became a therapeutic modality widely used by worldwide physical therapists [9]. Nevertheless, its great popularity over five decades, its application on clinical environment changed during this period. For example, in the past, its thermal effects were aimed primarily. Nowadays, it prioritized the non-thermal effects, especially on tissue repair and in wound healing [2]. Despite its widespread use, there is still lack of evidence of its efficacy by RCTs as well as a lack of consensus about the parameters to be used during application in treating

Brazilian Journal of Otorhinolaryngology , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1808-86942011000600008
Abstract: stapedotomies are perfomed with the aid of surgical microscopes. however, the microscope has some limitations and may cause complications such as damage to the chorda tympani nerve. there are just a few cases and no series published on the use of sino-nasal endoscopes in stapedotomies. objectives: a) to investigate the feasibility of using sino-nasal endoscopes in stapedotomies, focusing on the visualization of important structures. b) to show initial results, discuss possible advantages and disadvantages of this instrument. methods: 15 patients with otosclerosis were selected to undergo stapedotomies in 2010. the data and surgery videos were analyzed retrospectively (study case series). the anatomical conditions of the oval window niche and surgical steps were described and used to assess possible benefits of such procedures. results: the surgeries were performed with endoscopes only and all relevant anatomical structures were visualized without difficulty. no complications were observed and 14 of the 15 patients reported improvement of their hearing, confirmed by postoperative audiological tests. conclusion: totally endoscopic stapes surgeries are technically feasible, safe and promising. in this small series, the main advantages were: virtually no trauma to the chorda tympani nerve and excellent vision. the disadvantages were the lack of stereoscopic vision, having to work with one hand only and the learning curve.
