A institucionaliza??o das estratégias de negócios: o caso das start-ups na internet brasileira em uma perspectiva construtivista
Vasconcelos, Flávio Carvalho de;
Revista de Administra??o Contemporanea , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-65552004000200009
Abstract: the objectivist approach to the social reality is not the only acceptable methodological approach, despite being the dominant research strategy in the business strategy field. interpretive approaches to business strategy have been suggested by many authors since the 1960's and 1970's. this article aims at reviewing the most important elements of a construtivist approach to business strategy, focusing on the consequences of such approach to the decision-making practice. those consequences are: (1) abandoning the prescription that organizations should adapt to their environment. (2) redefining opportunities, threats and strategic constraints from a cognitive perspective, and (3) the possibility of thinking differently about business strategy giving more emphasis to the decision making process. in this article the strategic styles of brazilian internet start-ups are evaluates from a neo-institutional perspective, illustrating some practical aspects of a strategy research based on a construtivist approach.

Tityus serrulatus venom and its toxins Ts1 and Ts5 increase cytosolic Ca2+ concentration in isolated vascular smooth muscle cells  [PDF]

Journal of Biophysical Chemistry (JBPC) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jbpc.2012.34035
Abstract: Voltage-gated Na+ channel (Nav channel) scorpion toxins are classified as α- and β-neurotoxins. Ts5 (α-neurotoxin) and Ts1 (β-neurotoxin) from Tityus serrulatus venom (TsV) interact with Nav channels, increasing Na+ influx and activating voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. This study aimed to investigate the effect of TsV, Ts1 and Ts5 on the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]C) in rat aortic smooth muscle cells. Toxins were isolated by ion exchange chromatography (Ts1) followed by RP-HPLC (Ts5). The rat aortic smooth muscle cells were isolated in Hanks buffer pH 7.4 and loaded with 5 μmol/L of Fura-2AM (45 minutes at 37℃), in order to measure [Ca2+]C by fluorescence of Fura-2/AM (ratio 340/380 nm). The fluorescence was measured in one single cell (excitation: 340 and 380 nm; emission: 510 nm). TsV (100 and 500 mg/mL) and its toxins Ts1 and Ts5 (50 and 100 mg/mL each) led to a concentration-dependent increase in [Ca2+]C. Tetrodotoxin (1 mmol/L), a Nav channel blocker, and verapamil (1 mmol/L), a voltage-operated Ca2+ channel blocker, inhibited the increase in [Ca2+]C induced by TsV (500 mg/mL). In conclusion, TsV and its toxins induce a concentration-dependent increase in [Ca2+]C that probably occurs through interaction with Nav channels, thus inducing depolarization and consequent Ca2+ influx. This assumption is based on the fact that this effect is inhibited by tetrodotoxin and verapamil, showing a direct action of TsV toxins on aorta smooth muscle cells.
Vantagem competitiva: os modelos teóricos atuais e a convergência entre estratégia e teoria organizacional
Vasconcelos, Flávio C.;Cyrino, álvaro B.;
Revista de Administra??o de Empresas , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-75902000000400003
Abstract: this article analyzes the convergence between business strategy and organizational theory, by making a detailed comparative study of four theories focusing competitive advantage phenomena. these theories include the strategic positioning school, the resource-based view, the market processes and the dynamic competencies theory. we conclude the convergence between organizational theory and business strategy is a promising research opportunity for both disciplines.
Tropicália: manobras estratégicas em redes de músicos
Kirschbaum, Charles;Carvalho de Vasconcelos, Flávio;
Revista de Administra??o de Empresas , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-75902007000300002
Abstract: this article aims to build bridges between three theoretical fields: organizational strategy, social networks, and social identities. by analyzing the networks of brazilian musicians (interpreters and composers), we monitor the emergence of new styles, along with the structural changes in the network. within the period in analysis, from 1958 to 1969, four musical styles emerge and consolidate: bossa nova, jovem guarda, mpb and tropicália. we utilized social networks analysis in order to grasp three dimensions of the field evolution: network evolution, creation of structural holes and transformation of actors' centrality. internal conflicts in a field generate brokerage opportunities among groups separated by structural holes. these holes might be gradually bridged through incremental transformations in the artists' networks. as the emerging artists' influence increases, there is higher potential for the introduction of a new style and change of the fi eld's classifi catory system.

Abstract: research on the context of human resource management in brazil indicates an important transition phase which hr departments face nowadays, from operational models of management to more strategic ones. several authors show that organizational learning has an increasingly important role in the new human resource management models that emerge in brazil. in this transition, paradoxes and contradictions usually appear in organizations, that quickly adopt new discources but face difficulties in implementting the appropriate new organizational structures and behaviours. through a case study, we show how an organization managed to avoid the undesirable effects of discource x practice paradox through the consolidation of a political model of human resource management. as these gradual changes allowed the social actores to build new competencies e relationships necessary to the implementation of the information systems in hr processes, organization is nowadays an adequate environment for learning.
ISO9000, consultants and paradoxes: a sociological analysis of quality assurance and human resource techniques
Vasconcelos, Isabella Freitas Gouveia de;Vasconcelos, Flávio Carvalho de;
Revista de Administra??o Contemporanea , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-65552003000100009
Abstract: this article analyses iso9000 normalization processes as sources of organizational isomorphism according to the new institutional theory. we present two in-depth case studies in the french computer industry showing that there are two manners to implement iso9000 standards: an in-depth procedure (concerned with organizational effectiveness and with external legitimacy) and an instrumental one (only concerned with external legitimacy). our findings show that resistance to change is a common phenomenon in iso9000 implementation programs having high impact on organizational power games and informal structures. in order to face these issues we suggest that consultants must go beyond engineering consultation methods that are only concerned with the structural fit between the organizational standards and the iso9000 requirements. the paradox hrm model shows that information that threatens an organization's collective self-concept is often ignored, rejected, reinterpreted or hidden. the manifestation of social defenses - the ways of groups of people deal with non-contained forms of anxiety and fear, can be seen as sources of behaviors blocking organizational change.
Gest?o de recursos humanos e identidade social: um estudo crítico
Freitas Gouveia de Vasconcelos, Isabella;C. Vasconcelos, Flávio;
Revista de Administra??o de Empresas , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-75902002000100007
Abstract: in this article we explore the interconnections between social identity and human resource management. we present the instrumental and the political hrm models, showing how different hrm practices shape social actors identity in organizations. we describe and analyze a case study elaborated in a french computer company to illustrate the theoretical considerations we develop. our study shows that autonomous social actors, those who are used to more participative political hrm practices, resist to the implementation of more restrictive hrm instrumental practices. in these situations, collective resistance may threaten the organization's change process.
