A institucionaliza??o das estratégias de negócios: o caso das start-ups na internet brasileira em uma perspectiva construtivista
Vasconcelos, Flávio Carvalho de;
Revista de Administra??o Contemporanea , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-65552004000200009
Abstract: the objectivist approach to the social reality is not the only acceptable methodological approach, despite being the dominant research strategy in the business strategy field. interpretive approaches to business strategy have been suggested by many authors since the 1960's and 1970's. this article aims at reviewing the most important elements of a construtivist approach to business strategy, focusing on the consequences of such approach to the decision-making practice. those consequences are: (1) abandoning the prescription that organizations should adapt to their environment. (2) redefining opportunities, threats and strategic constraints from a cognitive perspective, and (3) the possibility of thinking differently about business strategy giving more emphasis to the decision making process. in this article the strategic styles of brazilian internet start-ups are evaluates from a neo-institutional perspective, illustrating some practical aspects of a strategy research based on a construtivist approach.

Tropicália: manobras estratégicas em redes de músicos
Kirschbaum, Charles;Carvalho de Vasconcelos, Flávio;
Revista de Administra??o de Empresas , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-75902007000300002
Abstract: this article aims to build bridges between three theoretical fields: organizational strategy, social networks, and social identities. by analyzing the networks of brazilian musicians (interpreters and composers), we monitor the emergence of new styles, along with the structural changes in the network. within the period in analysis, from 1958 to 1969, four musical styles emerge and consolidate: bossa nova, jovem guarda, mpb and tropicália. we utilized social networks analysis in order to grasp three dimensions of the field evolution: network evolution, creation of structural holes and transformation of actors' centrality. internal conflicts in a field generate brokerage opportunities among groups separated by structural holes. these holes might be gradually bridged through incremental transformations in the artists' networks. as the emerging artists' influence increases, there is higher potential for the introduction of a new style and change of the fi eld's classifi catory system.

Homology of the Fifth Epibranchial and Accessory Elements of the Ceratobranchials among Gnathostomes: Insights from the Development of Ostariophysans
Murilo Carvalho, Flávio Alicino Bockmann, Marcelo Rodrigues de Carvalho
PLOS ONE , 2013, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0062389
Abstract: Epibranchials are among the main dorsal elements of the gill basket in jawed vertebrates (Gnathostomata). Among extant fishes, chondrichthyans most resemble the putative ancestral condition as all branchial arches possess every serially homologous piece. In osteichthyans, a primitive rod-like epibranchial 5, articulated to ceratobranchial 5, is absent. Instead, epibranchial 5 of many actinopterygians is here identified as an accessory element attached to ceratobranchial 4. Differences in shape and attachment of epibranchial 5 in chondrichthyans and actinopterygians raised suspicions about their homology, prompting us to conduct a detailed study of the morphology and development of the branchial basket of three ostariophysans (Prochilodus argenteus, Characiformes; Lophiosilurus alexandri and Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, Siluriformes). Results were interpreted within a phylogenetic context of major gnathostome lineages. Developmental series strongly suggest that the so-called epibranchial 5 of actinopterygians does not belong to the epal series because it shares the same chondroblastic layer with ceratobranchial 4 and its ontogenetic emergence is considerably late. This neomorphic structure is called accessory element of ceratobranchial 4. Its distribution among gnathostomes indicates it is a teleost synapomorphy, occurring homoplastically in Polypteriformes, whereas the loss of the true epibranchial 5 is an osteichthyan synapomorphy. The origin of the accessory element of ceratobranchial 4 appears to have occurred twice in osteichthyans, but it may have a single origin; in this case, the accessory element of ceratobranchial 4 would represent a remnant of a series of elements distally attached to ceratobranchials 1–4, a condition totally or partially retained in basal actinopterygians. Situations wherein a structure is lost while a similar neomorphic element is present may lead to erroneous homology assessments; these can be avoided by detailed morphological and ontogenetic investigations interpreted in the light of well-supported phylogenetic hypotheses.

Open Journal of Nursing (OJN) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojn.2016.612101
Abstract: Objective: To summarize the scientific knowledge concerning the promotion of health after establishing the Family Health Strategy. Method: This is an integrative review conducted in databases: LILACS, MEDLINE/PubMed, SciELO and Cochrane, using following key words: Family Health Strategy; Health Promotion and Health Personnel. Results: After the criteria established 23 articles were selected, identifying strengths, weaknesses and challenges of health promotion after establishing the Family Health Strategy. Conclusion: Despite the effectiveness of health promotion practices in many health units of the family still persist the curative care model.
ISO9000, consultants and paradoxes: a sociological analysis of quality assurance and human resource techniques

Revista de Administra??o Contemporanea , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-65552003000100009
Abstract: this article analyses iso9000 normalization processes as sources of organizational isomorphism according to the new institutional theory. we present two in-depth case studies in the french computer industry showing that there are two manners to implement iso9000 standards: an in-depth procedure (concerned with organizational effectiveness and with external legitimacy) and an instrumental one (only concerned with external legitimacy). our findings show that resistance to change is a common phenomenon in iso9000 implementation programs having high impact on organizational power games and informal structures. in order to face these issues we suggest that consultants must go beyond engineering consultation methods that are only concerned with the structural fit between the organizational standards and the iso9000 requirements. the paradox hrm model shows that information that threatens an organization's collective self-concept is often ignored, rejected, reinterpreted or hidden. the manifestation of social defenses - the ways of groups of people deal with non-contained forms of anxiety and fear, can be seen as sources of behaviors blocking organizational change.

The variance composition of firm growth rates
Brito, Luiz Artur Ledur;Vasconcelos, Flávio Carvalho de;
BAR. Brazilian Administration Review , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1807-76922009000200004
Abstract: firms exhibit a wide variability in growth rates. this can be seen as another manifestation of the fact that firms are different from one another in several respects. this study investigated this variability using the variance components technique previously used to decompose the variance of financial performance. the main source of variation in growth rates, responsible for more than 40% of total variance, corresponds to individual, idiosyncratic firm aspects and not to industry, country, or macroeconomic conditions prevailing in specific years. firm growth, similar to financial performance, is mostly unique to specific firms and not an industry or country related phenomenon. this finding also justifies using growth as an alternative outcome of superior firm resources and as a complementary dimension of competitive advantage. this also links this research with the resource-based view of strategy. country was the second source of variation with around 10% of total variance. the analysis was done using the compustat global database with 80,320 observations, comprising 13,221 companies in 47 countries, covering the years of 1994 to 2002. it also compared the variance structure of growth to the variance structure of financial performance in the same sample
