Abstract: Museums constantly undergo shifts and changes in the roles and functions they serve in society. We report on the expanding roles of a children’s STEAM museum through a case study of two adult-only, fundraising events that the museum implemented. Drawing on both qualitative and quantitative measures, our analysis pursues two complementary threads. First, we seek to characterize those events in detail so that we might understand the events’ culture and functioning. Second, we look into the population who frequents the events, focusing specifically on various indicators of socio-economic status. By bringing these analytical threads together, we corroborate the finding that museums are expanding into?curating fun?experiences that are highly tailored to certain segments of the adult public. Importantly, attending to the empirical details of such processes, we further find that the observed changes1) directly impact the job demands and require?skills of children’s museum staff, 2) reify?the museum as an important economic agent in the community, and 3) potentially reproduce patterns of inequitable access to STEAM cultural capital, among others.
TV journalism and power in presidential elections

Brazilian Journalism Research , 2011,
Abstract: During the early years of television′s existence, when the luminous screen glowing in the middle of the living room was considered to be only a household appliance, there were some people who said that “TV is to watch, not to study” (!). And thus, due mainly to this bias, the academic world showed resistance to the first theoretical works and field research on this media which, among the conventional communication media, is without the slightest doubt the most influential form of political persuasion and disseminator of models and social practices. If at some time someone thought that TV′s influence on society did not deserve profound studies, today this serious error of evaluation is seen as responsible for the delay in the initiation of a serious study devoted to revealing the true facts. TV influences the entire political process, and how!

Tityus serrulatus venom and its toxins Ts1 and Ts5 increase cytosolic Ca2+ concentration in isolated vascular smooth muscle cells  [PDF]

Abstract: Voltage-gated Na+ channel (Nav channel) scorpion toxins are classified as α- and β-neurotoxins. Ts5 (α-neurotoxin) and Ts1 (β-neurotoxin) from Tityus serrulatus venom (TsV) interact with Nav channels, increasing Na+ influx and activating voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. This study aimed to investigate the effect of TsV, Ts1 and Ts5 on the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]C) in rat aortic smooth muscle cells. Toxins were isolated by ion exchange chromatography (Ts1) followed by RP-HPLC (Ts5). The rat aortic smooth muscle cells were isolated in Hanks buffer pH 7.4 and loaded with 5 μmol/L of Fura-2AM (45 minutes at 37℃), in order to measure [Ca2+]C by fluorescence of Fura-2/AM (ratio 340/380 nm). The fluorescence was measured in one single cell (excitation: 340 and 380 nm; emission: 510 nm). TsV (100 and 500 mg/mL) and its toxins Ts1 and Ts5 (50 and 100 mg/mL each) led to a concentration-dependent increase in [Ca2+]C. Tetrodotoxin (1 mmol/L), a Nav channel blocker, and verapamil (1 mmol/L), a voltage-operated Ca2+ channel blocker, inhibited the increase in [Ca2+]C induced by TsV (500 mg/mL). In conclusion, TsV and its toxins induce a concentration-dependent increase in [Ca2+]C that probably occurs through interaction with Nav channels, thus inducing depolarization and consequent Ca2+ influx. This assumption is based on the fact that this effect is inhibited by tetrodotoxin and verapamil, showing a direct action of TsV toxins on aorta smooth muscle cells.
Nocturnal eating syndrome: a case report with therapeutic response to dexfenfluramine
Mancini, Marcio C.;Alóe, Flávio;
Sao Paulo Medical Journal , 1994, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-31801994000200011
Abstract: a woman with nocturnal eating syndrome responsive to dexfenfluramine (dxf) is reported. eating consisted of nightly ingestion of large amounts of high-calorie meals and often sloppy meal consumption or preparation. amnesia for the episodes was total. anorexigenic medications produced partial control of her daytime carbohydrate craving and no nocturnal eating change. dxf stopped her eating behavior completely. nocturnal eating herein meets all 4 dsm-iii-r diagnostic criteria for binge eating disorder. 5-ht role in neural process controlling sleep-wakefulness (sw) has been widely shown. a 5-ht agonist like dxf could determine changes in the sw processes producing the therapeutic outcome reported herein. however, a specific dxf effect on the behavioral control of carbohydrate ingestion can not be dismissed.
Diagnóstico de tumores do angulo ponto-cerebelar com o auxílio de técnicas de inteligência artificial
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2000000100009
Abstract: we are concerned in this paper with learning classification procedures from known cases. more precisely, we provide a diagnostic model that discriminate between cerebellum-pontine angle (cpa) tumors and otorhinolaryngological (ent) disorders. usually, in order to distinguish between cpa tumors and ent disorders one must perform clinical-neurological examination together with expensive radiological imagery (ct and mri). the proposed model was obtained through artificial intelligence methods and presented a good accuracy level (88.4%) when tested against new cases, considering only clinical examination without radiological imagery results.

Materials Sciences and Applications (MSA) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/msa.2016.712066
Abstract: Oxidized (GO) and expanded (G-Exp) graphite were employed to prepare composites with ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) matrix using masterbatches of polyethylene with different compositions. The materials and a blend of UHMWPE/HDPE were prepared by extrusion and their properties were evaluated. The effect of carbon fillers on the crystalline structure, thermo dynamic-mechanical (DMTA) and thermal properties (melting and crystallization temperatures) of the composites were discussed. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements showed that the addition of masterbatch with GO and G-Exp significantly increased the crystallite size of composites, increasing the temperatures of melting, degradation, glass transition and the degree of crystallinity of polyethylene. DMTA analysis indicated the storage and loss moduli of composites in relation to neat UHMWPE, the blend and UHMWPE/composites. SEM micrographs showed a flatter, continuous and uniform surface meaning a compact lamellar structure. The present work resulted in interesting findings on the effects of GO on the crystalline structures, mechanical and thermal properties of UHMWPE, which can lead to generalizations useful for future work.
