Abstract: soybean rust chemical control depends on the correct selection of the spray nozzles. this study evaluated the spray nozzle effect on soybean rust control application. a randomized complete-block design with four replications was used, in a factorial model (4 x 2) + 1: four spray nozzles (hollow cone spray nozzles, with and without air induction, pre-orifice twin flat fan and turbo twin flat fan), two spray volumes (150 and 200 l ha-1) and the control (non-treated plot). m-soy 8008 soybean (early cycle) was sown. after the application of the fungicide tebuconazole, with the different nozzles and volume rates, the spray deposition on the plant canopy, rust severity, defoliation level and yield were evaluated. the results showed that there was no influence of the nozzle type neither of the application volume in rust control. in the canopy lower part, the coverage obtained with the four nozzles was less than 7% of the area, therefore, it is necessary to find strategies to increase that deposition. the fungicide decreased rust severity, increasing soybean yield, which was, on average, 157% greater than that obtained in the control.
S?o Paulo: segrega??o urbana e desigualdade
Villa?a, Flávio;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142011000100004
Abstract: the paper starts with the idea that urban space is not a product of nature but of men′s labour. it proceeds presenting a new way of focusing and analyzing urban segregation, using the city of s?o paulo as a case study. through several social indicators, presented in 8 illustrations, it shows urban segregation in s?o paulo. it shows however that this new way also applies to any brazilian metropolitan area. important aspects shown by this new way are: on the one hand, the possibility it offers of analyzing the relationship between urban segregation of residences, working places and the overall urban spatial structure; on the other hand, the possibility of analyzing the relationship between urban segregation and the social inequality which prevails in brazilian society as well as with social domination. it finally shows the relationship between human production of urban space and human production of time and the importance of the former.

Abstract: During the early years of television′s existence, when the luminous screen glowing in the middle of the living room was considered to be only a household appliance, there were some people who said that “TV is to watch, not to study” (!). And thus, due mainly to this bias, the academic world showed resistance to the first theoretical works and field research on this media which, among the conventional communication media, is without the slightest doubt the most influential form of political persuasion and disseminator of models and social practices. If at some time someone thought that TV′s influence on society did not deserve profound studies, today this serious error of evaluation is seen as responsible for the delay in the initiation of a serious study devoted to revealing the true facts. TV influences the entire political process, and how!

Based on regional climate model simulations conducted with RegCM3 and NCEP Reanalyses, the impact of anomalous climate forcing on environmental vulnerability to wildfire occurrence in Africa is analyzed by applying the Potential Fire Index (PFI). Three different model-based vegetation distributions were analyzed for a present day simulation (1980-2000) and for the end of the twenty-first century (2080-2100). It was demonstrated that under current climate and vegetation conditions the PFI is able to reproduce the principal fire risk areas which are concentrated in the Sahelian region from December to March, and in subtropical Africa from July to October. Predicted future changes in vegetation lead to substantial modifications in magnitude of the PFI, particularly for the southern and subtropical region of Africa. The impact of climate changes other than through vegetation, was found to induce more moderate changes in the fire risk, and increase the area vulnerable to fire occurrence in particular in sub-Saharan. The PFI reproduces areas with high fire activity, indicating that this index is a useful tool for forecasting fire occurrence worldwide, because it is based on regionally dependent vegetation and climate factors.

Tityus serrulatus venom and its toxins Ts1 and Ts5 increase cytosolic Ca2+ concentration in isolated vascular smooth muscle cells  [PDF]

Abstract: Voltage-gated Na+ channel (Nav channel) scorpion toxins are classified as α- and β-neurotoxins. Ts5 (α-neurotoxin) and Ts1 (β-neurotoxin) from Tityus serrulatus venom (TsV) interact with Nav channels, increasing Na+ influx and activating voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. This study aimed to investigate the effect of TsV, Ts1 and Ts5 on the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]C) in rat aortic smooth muscle cells. Toxins were isolated by ion exchange chromatography (Ts1) followed by RP-HPLC (Ts5). The rat aortic smooth muscle cells were isolated in Hanks buffer pH 7.4 and loaded with 5 μmol/L of Fura-2AM (45 minutes at 37℃), in order to measure [Ca2+]C by fluorescence of Fura-2/AM (ratio 340/380 nm). The fluorescence was measured in one single cell (excitation: 340 and 380 nm; emission: 510 nm). TsV (100 and 500 mg/mL) and its toxins Ts1 and Ts5 (50 and 100 mg/mL each) led to a concentration-dependent increase in [Ca2+]C. Tetrodotoxin (1 mmol/L), a Nav channel blocker, and verapamil (1 mmol/L), a voltage-operated Ca2+ channel blocker, inhibited the increase in [Ca2+]C induced by TsV (500 mg/mL). In conclusion, TsV and its toxins induce a concentration-dependent increase in [Ca2+]C that probably occurs through interaction with Nav channels, thus inducing depolarization and consequent Ca2+ influx. This assumption is based on the fact that this effect is inhibited by tetrodotoxin and verapamil, showing a direct action of TsV toxins on aorta smooth muscle cells.
Trichomycterus maracaya, a new catfish from the upper rio Paraná, southeastern Brazil (Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae), with notes on the T. brasiliensis species-complex
Bockmann, Flávio A.;Sazima, Ivan;
Neotropical Ichthyology , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-62252004000200003
Abstract: trichomycterus maracaya, a new species of trichomycteridae, is described from a streamlet in the upper rio paraná, po?os de caldas, state of minas gerais, southeastern brazil. the following putative autapomorphies distinguishes t. maracaya from congeneric species: 1) row of lateral blotches not forming a stripe at any phase during ontogeny; 2) superficial layer of pigmentation of juveniles and large (presumably adults) specimens consisting solely of scattered chromatophores. furthermore, the new species is characterized by a combination of yellow ground color in life and mottled pattern formed by small to medium-sized, brown, irregularly-coalescent, well-defined deeper-lying blotches, and more superficial dots on the body. trichomycterus maracaya is assigned to the t. brasiliensis species-complex (which includes t. brasiliensis, t. iheringi, t. mimonha, t. potschi, t. vermiculatus, and several undescribed species apparently endemic to the main river basins draining the brazilian shield) based on the presence of: 1) blotches in four longitudinal rows of deeper-lying pigmentation on the trunk large, horizontally-elongated, and well-defined; 2) pectoral fin with i+5-6 rays; 3) separation between the anterior and posterior cranial fontanels by the primordial epiphyseal cartilaginous bar being present only in larger specimens; and 4) pelvic-fin bases very close to each other, sometimes in contact.
