História e Ciências Sociais: zonas de fronteira
Silva, Fernando Teixeira da;
História (S?o Paulo) , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742005000100006
Abstract: this article analyses the relationship between history and social sciences, investigating over a century of conceptual and institutional conflicts and reciprocities between them. the text draws as a debate that culminates in structuralist anthropology, which, led by lévi-strauss, rethinks the confrontations between methodical history and durkheim’s sociology, through the combats for history of the annales’ founders. over the last decades, the increasing proximity between history and anthropology has revived the debate, culminating in the recent reflections about the identity of history and its openness towards other human sciences, both in the tradition of "total history", and in recent micro-analytic approaches.
A política externa estadunidense no atual quadro político sul-americano
Silva, Luiz Fernando da;
Latinoamérica. Revista de estudios Latinoamericanos , 2011,
Abstract: the central thesis that we aim to survey in this paper is that the present south-american political scene has required of the american imperialism a strategical redesign, in the sense of the neutralization, weakening and, if it is possible, destruction of regional political experiences/tendencies not aligned to its foreign politics. under the mask of the defense of democracy and beneath the argument that latin american "market oriented politics" are at stake, due to questions that goes back from the "delin-quency" -in mexico-, the global terrorism, the organized international crime up to the worldwide drug traffic, the global strategy of american imperialism then sets up the definition of a new doctrine of preventive war that justifies the utilization of hard power against any country, in the name of its own defense. at the heart of the question what -actually- is in the agenda is the defense (and reproduction) of the benefits of its multinationals corporations and financial capital, by means of the international sub-traction of profitable assets, such as financial, energetic, communicational and natural resources, in addition to the domination of local markets, beyond facilitating capital flee amongst others.

Alternative System of Industrial Paint Applied to Spherical Mount for Liquefied Petroleum Gas  [PDF]
Fernando B. Mainier, Francisco Otavio Pereira da Silva, Gilberto Oliveira da Silva
Journal of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering (MSCE) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/msce.2014.25002
Abstract:

The present article reports the application of zinc ethyl silicate paint and the use of internal and external paint schemes on carbon steel spheres for the storage of liquefied petroleum gas. The new paint scheme eliminates the steps of blasting in the field and minimizes the collection of waste generated and the environmental impact, reducing the service time onsite and therefore providing a productivity gain and better health and cleanliness at work. The results were obtained through test runs and qualified in bodies-of-proof made with the same characteristics as the sphere, that is, using the same material (carbon steel), thickness, and mechanical formation and subject to the same conditions of design and implementation process. The paint scheme was approved, qualified, and committed to the supplier’s warranty with the paint manufacturer and assembler of the storage spheres for liquefied petroleum gas.

Attention Changes and Victimization in a Sample of Adolescents Victims of Domestic Violence  [PDF]
Paula Approbato de Oliveira, Thiago Fernando da Silva, Sandra Scivoletto
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2016.43026
Abstract: Objective: To report attention changes in a sample of adolescents victims of domestic violence and discuss how this change may be related to an addictive and complex cycle of victimization and abuse. Methods: 78 adolescents went through psychiatric and neuropsychological evaluation. The Kiddie-Sads-Present and Lifetime Version and the Brazilian version of the Childhood Trauma Questionaire (CTQ) were applied. The neuropsychological assessment was conducted by trained professionals using the Wechsler Children’s Global Assessment Scale, 3rd edition-WlSC III. The sample was divided into 3 groups according to the intensity of the reported maltreatment-obtained by the CTQ score (comparison group, moderate degree of abuse and severe maltreatment). Results: The group that showed moderate maltreatment showed better performance in an attention task compared to the comparison group. At the severe maltreatment group, this difference was not observed. Conclusions: Children and adolescents who are victims of maltreatment are more alert to environmental details that surround them as a form of adaptation to defend themselves against potential threats. However, they could react precipitously with inappropriate behavior in some contexts. This can lead to a favorable environment for new and repeated situations of violence, abuse and a perpetuation of this victimization.
An empiric equation for the latent heat of vaporization of moisture in bananas during its isothermal drying  [PDF]
Wilton Pereira da Silva, Cleide Maria Diniz Pereira da Silva e Silva, Fernando José de Almeida Gama, Josivanda Palmeira Gomes
Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/as.2012.32025
Abstract: In order to determine the energy needed to artificially dry a product, the latent heat of vaporization of moisture in the product, hfg, must be known. Generally, the expressions for hfg reported in the literature are of the form hfg = h(T)f(M), where h(T) is the latent heat of vaporization of free water, and f(M) is a function of the equilibrium moisture content, M. But expressions of this type contain a simplification because, in this case, the ratio hfg/h would only depend to the moisture content. In this article a more general expression for the latent heat of vaporization, namely hfg = g(M,T), is used to determine hfg for banana. To this end, a computer program was developed which fits automatically about 500 functions, with one or two independent variables, imbedded in its library to experimental data. The program uses nonlinear regression, and classifies the best functions according to the least reduced chi-square. A set of executed statistical tests shows that the generalized expression used in this work given by hfg = g(M,T) produces better results of hfg for bananas than other equations found in the literature.
Scent-robbing and fighting among male orchid bees, Eulaema (Apeulaema) nigrita Lepeletier, 1841 (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Euglossini)
Carvalho Filho, Fernando da Silva;
Biota Neotropica , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-06032010000200038
Abstract: male neotropical orchid bees (euglossini) collect volatile chemicals from floral and non-floral sources and store then in specialized hind tibial structures. the ultimate causes of euglossine fragrance collection remain a mystery. recent evidence suggests that odoriferous substances play a role in euglossine courtship and serve as indicator of male genetic quality. males of eulaema nigrita were observed robbing scents from the detached hind legs of a conspecific male e. nigrita in belém, brazil. the hind leg seemed to have been detached during fights between males, since one male was missing a hind leg where the observation was made. this behavior appears to be common among males of e. nigrita since more than one case was observed on the same day. the observation reported here shows that males of e. nigrita with tibiae filled with fragrances are attacked by conspecific males that attempt to steal it.
