Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-58782012000300009
Abstract: enhanced oil recovery methods are becoming an important source of oil production of wells that have already been explored and, by these methods, of increase of the total volume of oil extracted. an important example is the injection of polymeric solutions after the injected water has reached the breakthrough point. in the present work an experimental apparatus was built in order to test the ability of enhanced oil recovery of polymeric solutions, composed by xanthan gum (xg) dissolved in distilled water. this apparatus consists of an idealized porous media made with small spheres inserted in a cylindrical cell and then filled with oil with the same viscosity as the petroleum found in campos basin (rio de janeiro, brazil). as displacing fluid, we tested polymeric solutions of different concentrations of xanthan gum and these non-newtonian fluids were characterized using a rotational rheometer. the resulting characterization has shown that increasing the concentration, not only the level of viscosity, but also the elasticity of the fluid increases. the shear-thinning behavior of the solution can be well captured by a power-law model. for higher concentrations the shear-thinning feature of the xanthan gum solution is more pronounced. we conducted an experimental procedure to mimic enhanced oil recovery process by first injecting water until the breakthrough point. increasing the polymer concentration, the extra amount of oil recovered also increase. theoretical and heuristic analyses show that in the shear dominated regions, the xanthan gum polymeric solutions do not increase pore efficiency, but increase sweep efficiency, while the extensional character of the polymeric solution seems to indicate that in extensional dominated regions the polymeric solutions play an important role on the oil recovery efficiency from both perspectives: pore and sweep efficiencies.

Abstract: neotropical swarm-founding wasps, the epiponini, are an outstanding group of social insects whose societies are polygynic and complex nest builders. caste dimorphism in these wasps ranges from incipient to highly distinct. morphometric analyses of nine body parts, ovarian status, relative age and development of the 5th gastral sternite gland (richards′ gland) of polybia bistriata fabricius were undertaken in order to estimate caste differentiation in nine colonies. morphological and physiological data were used in multivariate analyses in order to evaluate the level of discrimination between inseminated and non-inseminated females. clear physiological differences were found: queens had highly developed ovaries and they were inseminated, and workers had totally undeveloped ovaries or they had few developed oocytes (only in two colonies), but in both cases insemination was not detected. anova and discriminant function analysis detected slight, but significant differences between castes. in relation to colony cycle, colonies were considered to be in the following stages: one in pre-emergence, four in worker production and four in sexuals production. richards′ gland analyses indicated that in small colonies (<100 females) queens had a less developed gland than in medium (100-200 females), and large colonies (>200 females). taking the whole data, it was possible to conclude that caste differences were slight, but more evident in some phases of the colony cycle, a phenomenon previously described for other epiponines.

Abstract: supercritical co2 deterpenation of orange peel oil is investigated in a semi-batch extractor modeled and simulated for a synthetic mixture of limonene (90% by weight) and linalol (10 %). mathematical modeling was done taking the supercritical extraction as a batch distillation on a co2-free basis. process parameters were calculated integrating rayleigh equation by a fourth order runge-kutta method. the phase equilibrium relationship was calculated by a modified peng-robinson eos with interaction parameters regressed from vle data of co2+limonene, co2+linalol and co2+limonene+linalol systems.

Abstract: Organic–inorganic magnetic hybrid materials (MHMs) combine a nonmagnetic and a magnetic component by means of electrostatic interactions or covalent bonds, and notable features can be achieved. Herein, we describe an application of a self-assembled material based on ferrite associated with β-cyclodextrin (Fe-Ni/Zn/βCD) at the nanoscale level. This MHM and pure ferrite (Fe-Ni/Zn) were used as an adsorbent system for Cr3+ and Cr2O72 ions in aqueous solutions. Prior to the adsorption studies, both ferrites were characterized in order to determine the particle size distribution, morphology and available binding sites on the surface of the materials. Microscopy analysis demonstrated that both ferrites present two different size domains, at the micro- and nanoscale level, with the latter being able to self-assemble into larger particles. Fe-Ni/Zn/βCD presented smaller particles and a more homogeneous particle size distribution. Higher porosity for this MHM compared to Fe-Ni/Zn was observed by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller isotherms and positron-annihilation-lifetime spectroscopy. Based on the pKa values, potentiometric titrations demonstrated the presence of βCD in the inorganic matrix, indicating that the lamellar structures verified by transmission electronic microscopy can be associated with βCD assembled structures. Colloidal stability was inferred as a function of time at different pH values, indicating the sedimentation rate as a function of pH. Zeta potential measurements identified an amphoteric behavior for the Fe-Ni/Zn/βCD, suggesting its better capability to remove ions (cations and anions) from aqueous solutions compared to that of Fe-Ni/Zn.

Abstract: We detected 19 complete endogenous retroviruses of the K family in the genome of rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta; RhERV-K) and 12 full length elements in the genome of the common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes; CERV-K). These sequences were compared with 55 human HERV-K and 20 CERV-K reported previously, producing a total data set of 106 full-length ERV-K genomes. Overall, 61% of the human elements compared to 21% of the chimpanzee and 47% of rhesus elements had estimated integration times less than 4.5 million years before present (MYBP), with an average integration times of 7.8 MYBP, 13.4 MYBP and 10.3 MYBP for HERV-K, CERV-K and RhERV-K, respectively. By excluding those ERV-K sequences generated by chromosomal duplication, we used 63 of the 106 elements to compare the population dynamics of ERV-K among species. This analysis indicated that both HERV-K and RhERV-K had similar demographic histories, including markedly smaller effective population sizes, compared to CERV-K. We propose that these differing ERV-K dynamics reflect underlying differences in the evolutionary ecology of the host species, such that host ecology and demography represent important determinants of ERV-K dynamics.
