Acta Botanica Brasilica , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-33062010000400026
Abstract: in this study we investigated the effects of light, temperature, and storage on seed germination of the wild pineapple ananasananassoides, an understorey species found in cerrado woodlands. seeds were germinated at temperatures of 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 oc and a 12-hr photoperiod and continuous darkness for 30-d. seeds were photoblastic and the optimum temperatures for germination were 25 and 30 oc. seeds stored for 12-mo at room temperature and at 4 oc were set to germinate at optimum conditions. germinability of stored seeds did not differ from that of recently collected seeds, regardless of storage temperature, indicating their physiological potential for seed bank formation. our results suggest that as in tropical rainforests, light may be an important factor controlling recruitment from seed banks for small-sized species from the cerrado woodlands.

Radiologia Brasileira , 2001,

Autopsy and Case Reports , 2012,
Abstract: Lipoma of the tongue is an uncommon benign tumor, being even more rare when there are multiple lesions. Lipoma accounts for 1-5% of all oral neoplasms. Lipoma occurs predominantly in males over the age of forty, although, in rare cases, children can be affected. Here, we report an unusual case of a female patient with bilateral lingual lipomas that were treated through surgical excision. nulo

Acta Botanica Brasilica , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-33062011000400008
Abstract: endophytic fungi represent large, yet unexplored components of biodiversity. this work evaluated the richness and the distribution of endophytes in the leaves of bauhinia brevipes (fabaceae). a total of 1110 colonies were recovered from the samples and grouped by their morphological traits into 126 taxa. the total number of taxa according to leaf development was: 102 in mature leaves, 93 in recently expanded leaves and 79 for unfolded leaves. the major endophyte genera were phomopsis, followed by dothiorella, pestalotiopsis and acremonium. the richness and the isolate numbers of endophytes were not statistically affected by leaf region. however, some taxa were leaf-age specific; six were isolated only from unfolded leaves, nine from recently expanded leaves and 17 were exclusively found in mature leaves. the composition of endophytes varied with leaf region; the similarities (jaccard's index) among the leaf regions of different leaf ages ranged from 0.36 to 0.46, indicating a high spatial variation in the community of endophytic fungi inside the leaves. the high richness of endophytes in this host plant highlights a significant contribution of fungi to tropical biodiversity and the need for further research in this area.

Abstract: context: sentinel node (sn) biopsy has changed the surgical treatment of malignant melanoma. the literature has emphasized the importance of gamma probe detection (gpd) of the sn. objective: our objective was to evaluate the efficacy of patent blue dye (pbd) and gpd for sn biopsy in different lymphatic basins. design: patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma in stages i and ii were submitted to biopsy of the sn, identified by pbd and gpd, as part of a research project. setting: patients were seen at hospital s?o paulo by a multidisciplinary group (plastic surgery tumor branch, nuclear medicine and pathology). patients: 64 patients with localized malignant melanoma were studied. the median age was 46.5 years. the primary tumor was located in the neck, trunk or extremities. interventions: preoperative lymphoscintigraphy, lymphatic mapping with pbd and intraoperative gpd was performed on all patients. the sn was examined by conventional and immunohistochemical staining. if the sn was not found or contained micrometastases, only complete lymphadenectomy was performed. main measurements: the sn was identified by pbd if it was blue-stained, and by gpd if demonstrated activity five times greater than the adipose tissue of the neighborhood. results: seventy lymphatic basins were explored. lymphoscintigraphy showed ambiguous drainage in 7 patients. gpd identified the sn in 68 basins (97%) and pbd in 53 (76%). pbd and gpd identified sn in 100% of the inguinal basins. for the remaining basins both techniques were complementary. a metastatic sn was found in 10 basins. three patients with negative sn had recurrence (median follow-up = 11 months). conclusion: although both gpd and pbd are useful and complementary, pbd alone identified the sn in 100% of the inguinal lymphatic basins.

Abstract: the production of visible light by chemical reactions constitutes interesting and fascinating phenomena and several reaction mechanisms are discussed to rationalize excited state formation. most efficient chemiluminescence reactions are thought to involve one or more electron transfer steps and chemiexcitation is believed to occur by radical annihilation. a brief introduction to the general principles of light production and the main known chemiexcitation mechanisms will be given here. subsequently, recent results on the mechanistic elucidation of efficient chemiluminescence systems, as the peroxyoxalate reaction, the induced decomposition of phenoxy-substituted 1,2-dioxetanes and the catalyzed decomposition of new a-peroxylactones will be discussed.

The aim of this work was to isolate and identify the yeasts prevalent in fresh grapes cultivated in the “São Francisco Valley” region (Brazil), as well as evaluating the cell growth of these indigenous yeasts during the fermentation of grape musts and their contribution to the improvement of wine aroma. The Chenin Blanc grape must fermented by H. opuntiae presented higher acceptance means at the three points analyzed (6.74, 6.78 and 7.30) and in the fermentation carried out by the yeasts H. opuntiae and S. cerevisiae, the highest mean acceptance (7.22) was observed after 120 hours, with no statistical difference from the sample fermented by H. opuntiae alone. Since these samples that showed higher acceptance means also receiving higher scores for purchasing intention, corresponding to the concepts of “definitely would buy” and “probably would buy”. The present study suggests that the fermentations of grape musts carried out by the yeast H. opuntiae and mixed cultures of H. opuntiae and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, positively influenced the sensory qualities of the wines and showed greater potential to increase the aroma of the musts and to develop specific wine styles.

Abstract: the use of prohibited antibiotics as growth promoters additives caused great impacts on poultry, bringing the need for the development of new additives. the diformiate potassium (dk), a salt of formic acid, is emerging as one of those alternatives. this experiment was conducted to evaluate the action of dk on the performance of broilers. one thousand and eight hundred broilers male of ross 308 breed, distributed into two trials of 900 birds each, and then randomly separated by five treatments with six replications, in a completely randomized experimental design, the treatments consisted by inclusion of increasing levels of dk to the diets (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12kg dk t-1). in the first trial carried out, the birds were fed with diets containing dk during the period 1 to 42 days. in the second trial, dk received only in the period from 21 to 42 days old. in both, the birds were weighed to housing, at 21 and 42 days and then the data were subjected to a linear regression analysis. in the first experiment, there was no improvement in the performance of birds, and there was a reduction in feed intake. similarly, in the second trial, the addition of dk reduced linearly the feed intake and weight gain, however, any effect on feed conversion in poultry. it was concluded that high dosis of dk cause acid-base imbalance of diets, with negative effects on the birds performance.
