Abstract: this paper attempts to establish the appropriateness of the question: "does it make sense to conceive of illness as a phenomenon that transcends categories of representation?" a correspondence between the phenomena of representation and spatialization can be identified. representation in this sense is the definition of a pathway that allows for chronological reference, in which a certain phenomenon is presented. we consider the paradigm that defines the anatomical-clinical domain and epidemiology as a form of representation or spatialization of illness. we conclude that it is possible to approach the process called "becoming ill", which trancends anatomical-clinical and epidemiological representation, provided that we admit the possibility of constructing knowledge beyond space, i.e., in non-chronological time.

Abstract: in the present study we have generated a grn comprising the process by which neural crest stem cells develop to two types of sensory neurons (propioceptors and nocioceptors). we have also been able to find patterns of regulation (motifs) that act cooperatively to control such process. surprisingly, these motifs take place in similar stages during the development of erythrocytes from hematopoietic stem cells. regarding the complexity of the grn found, we then used random boolean networks (rbn) for this purpose, which showed key components as well as the dynamics of the process through changes in initial conditions. finally, the motifs were reflected in the model, suggesting insights for further studies.

Abstract: background: the restless legs syndrome (rls) is a movement disorder characterized by an imperative urge to move the legs, associated with paraesthesias, motor restlessness and worsening of symptoms at night with at least partial relief by activity. its prevalence ranges between 2-15% of general adult population and 20-30% of uremic patients. aim: to evaluate the frecuency and the clinical features of rls in a sample of general adult population and in uremic patients, in chile, correlating it with biochemical parameters. method: 100 relatives of outpatients and 166 uremic patients undergoing chronic haemodialysis were interviewed assessing the presence and severity of rls according to current diagnostic criteria. biochemical parameters assessed were hematocrit, serum ferritin, phosphate, intact parathyroid hormone (ipth) levels. results: 13% of the general population sample was affected, 15% of them were severe. forty three cases were found among uremic patients (25.9%) (p <0.01 vs general population), 60% of them were severe and women were affected with higher frequency (p <0.05) and severity (p <0.01). four patients presented rls even during hemodialysis. no correlation was found with biochemical parameters. most rls cases had not been diagnosed previously. conclusions: in our population rls is common and undetected. it is especially prevalent and severe in uremic patients: we found no evidence that anaemia, iron deficiency or ipth level play a major pathogenic role. our findings emphasize the need of greater medical awareness of rls because available therapy may improve the quality of life (rev méd chile 2001; 129: 179-86).

Abstract: objectives: to decide the action politics (to perform or not transrectal prostatic biopsy) for a psa cut point of 4 and 10 ng/ml through the construction of a mathematical decision tree. methods: we calculate the usefulness of the biopsy through a subjective score, from 0 to 10, established after a survey of the 20 staff members of the health-care area, applying an global analysis with creation of total profile cards through an orthogonal design. results: the main usefulness of prostate cancer screening would be not to perform transrectal prostatic biopsies when psa is lower than 4 ng/ml.

Abstract: EGFR, PDGFRA and VEGFR2 immunohistochemistry was performed in all samples, followed by DNA isolation from the gross macroscopically dissection of the neoplastic area. Screening for EGFR (exons 18–21) and PDGFRA (exons 12, 14 and 18) mutations was done by PCR – single-strand conformational polymorphism (PCR-SSCP).Despite the presence of EGFR immunohistochemical positive reactions in 43% (13/30) of the samples, no EGFR activating mutations in the hotspot region (exons 18–21) were identified. A silent base substitution (CAG>CAA) in EGFR exon 20 at codon 787 (Q787Q) was found in 17 cases (56%). All PDGFRA immunohistochemical reactions were positive and consistently observed in the stromal component, staining fibroblasts and endothelial cells, as well as in the cytoplasm of malignant cells. No activating PDGFRA mutations were found, yet, several silent mutations were observed, such as a base substitution in exon 12 (CCA>CCG) at codon 567 (P567P) in 9 cases and in exon 18 (GTC>GTT) at codon 824 (V824V) in 4 cases. We also observed the presence of base substitutions in intron 14 (IVS14+3G>A and IVS14+49G>A) in two different cases, and in intron 18 (IVS18-50insA) in 4 cases. VEGFR2 positivity was observed in 22 of 30 cases (73.3%), and was significantly associated with lack of metastasis (p = 0.038).This is the most extensive analysis of EGFR, PDGFRA and VEGFR2 in cervical adenosquamous carcinomas. Despite the absence of EGFR and PDGFRA activating mutations, the presence of overexpression of these three important therapeutic targets in a subset of cases may be important in predicting the sensitivity of adenosquamous carcinoma to specific anti-RTKs drugs.Adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC) of the uterine cervix is a relatively infrequent histological subtype of cervical cancer, associated with very aggressive behaviour and reduced survival rates [1]. ASC histopathological interpretation remains controversial; theoretically, ASC is a mixture of malignant glandular and squamous epit

Abstract: Horses are superb athletes in comparison to other athletic species. Exceptionally high maximal oxygen uptake, a splenic reserve of red blood cells released into the circulation during exercise, and a high amount of energy stored as glycogen in the muscles contribute to the high performance capacity of a horse [27,9]. Furthermore, equine muscles and blood are equipped with properties that increase their tolerance to lactic acid, the formation of which is necessary for maximal performance. The buffer capacity of muscles of trained horses is higher than in other athletic species, and red blood cells appear to function as a lactate sink, both of which phenomena may increase the anaerobic capacity [40,51]. Because the lactic acid-induced acidification is the single most important factor causing fatigue, the regulation of its concentration in exercising muscle plays a central role in muscle function. Recent characterisation of monocarboxylate transporters, a protein family involved in the transport of lactate across biological membranes, has added a new perspective to our knowledge of lactate metabolism in exercise physiology [50,21]. At the moment the physiological importance of these transporters is not completely understood, but the number of isoforms of monocarboxylate transporters and the conservative nature of these proteins suggest that the pathways of lactate are far more complex than generally believed.Formation of lactic acid in muscle tissue is basically a question of the capacity of different metabolic pathways. Both at rest and during exercise, the rate of ADP rephosphorylation must meet the demand of ATP for contraction and other functions of the muscle cell. During light work, the demand for ATP lies within the limits of aerobic capacity, and ATP is produced by oxidative phosphorylation, but with increasing intensity, anaerobic pathways of energy production, i.e., substrate-level phosphorylation, become more important. It has been calculated that during a 4
