Adhesion Studies of Diamond-Like Carbon Films Deposited on Ti6Al4V Alloy after Carbonitriding  [PDF]

Abstract: Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) coatings have attracted significant attention due to their low friction coefficient, high degree of hardness, chemical inertness, and high wear resistance as well as and their many possible uses in metallurgical, aeronautical, and biomedical applications. However, DLC has low adhesion strength to metallic substrates. Carbonitriding was performed before DLC deposition to improve this adherence. Different concentration of nitrogen in the gas mixture was used during the carbonitriding of Ti6Al4V alloy. DLC films were subsequently grown from methane using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The samples were characterized with Raman scattering spectroscopy, nanoindentation, and tribological tests. Films from 80.0% N2 had the best friction coefficient (0.07) and a critical load of ~22 N. In the scratching test, these films had adhesive failure and they completely detached from the substrate only in the end of the tests. SEM images show carbonitring promoted a significant increase in the surface defects (homogeneously distributed) but without the presence of microcracks. EDX analysis indicated that nitrogen element was diffused throughout the thickness of the samples. Hydrogen and carbon atoms from carbonitriding formed a diffusion-barrier layer that can be used as the first step for DLC deposition. This carbonitriding can also provide a carbide layer, which serves as the precursor for the nucleation and growth of DLC films.

Abstract: intermittent claudication (ic) is one of the defining characteristics approved by nanda international (nanda-i) for the nursing diagnosis, ineffective peripheral tissue perfusion. for the correct identification of this defining feature, the nurse must know the clinical characteristics and have specific data collection skills. the aim of this article was to highlight aspects relevant to the identification of ic during the assessment and physical exam performed by the nurse. based on specific guidelines and other publications on the subject, we described the clinical characteristics of ic and its differentiation from other phenomena that have nociceptive effects on lower limbs. questionnaires were applied for the traceability of ic, for changes in physical examination, which may accompany the symptom and evaluation through the ankle-brachial index.
Proposed model for biomineralization of novel nanohydroxyapatite/vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotube scaffolds

Abstract: for the first time, the growth mechanism of biominerals formed on plate-like nanohydroxyapatite (nhap) electrodeposited on superhydrophilic vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (vamwcnt-o2) is presented and a model for the specific growth preference is discussed. vamwcnt-o2 films were obtained by microwave-assisted chemical vapor deposition method and funcionalized by oxygen plasma. nhap/vamwcnt-o2 nanocomposites were fabricated with a direct electrodeposition of the thin nhap films onto the vamwcnt-o2 films. the biomineralized "scaffolds" were obtained by soaking nhap/vamwcnt-o2 in simulated body fluid for 7, 14 and 21 days. results show that the carboxyl functional groups directly attached onto vamwcnt tips after oxygen plasma treatment were essential for the acceleration of the oh- formation and the deposition of plate-like nhap crystals.

Abstract: Homeopathy is a medical approach fit to the principles that guide the Brazilian public health policy and agrees with the new paradigm in pharmaceutical education, with the focus on the human condition.Thence the importance of the teaching of homeopathy in pharmacy undergraduate courses. This study aimed to analyze the models for the teaching of homeopathy in three Institutions of Superior Education (IES) in the State of Goiás and to verify its reflection on the level of knowledge on homeopathy expressed by the students. The study programs of the IES were analyzed and questionnaires were applied to students who had already attended homeopathy courses. The results allowed to verify that mistaken ideas on homeopathy were mainly expressed by the students who learned homeopathy as a subtopic of another more general subject. This variability in the models of homeopathy teaching may lead to qualitative diversity in the homeopathic understanding of the pharmacy professionals in the State of Goiás.

Abstract: We report the case of a 72-year-old female with pure autonomic failure, a rare entity, whose diagnosis of autonomic dysfunction was determined with a series of complementary tests. For approximately 2 years, the patient has been experiencing dizziness and a tendency to fall, a significant weight loss, generalized weakness, dysphagia, intestinal constipation, blurred vision, dry mouth, and changes in her voice. She underwent clinical assessment and laboratory tests (biochemical tests, chest X-ray, digestive endoscopy, colonoscopy, chest computed tomography, abdomen and pelvis computed tomography, abdominal ultrasound, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring). Measurements of catecholamine and plasmatic renin activity were performed at rest and after physical exercise. Finally the patient underwent physiological and pharmacological autonomic tests that better diagnosed dysautonomia.

Abstract: nanobiomaterials based on superhydrophilic vertically-aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (vamwcnt-o2) are promising for their properties and bone tissue biocompatibility. vamwcnt-o2 films with nanohydroxyapatite (nhap) aim to improve mechanical properties and biocompatibility of this new nanocomposite due to its resemblance to bone matrix structure. this study aimed to produce in vitro biomineralized nhap/vamwcnt-o2 nanocomposites using simulated body fluid (sbf) with two different phs (6.10 and 7.40) during 7 days to obtain a new surface design with higher crystalinity and better morphology of nhap/vamwcant-o2 nanocomposites. the objective is to obtain biomineralized nanobiomaterials to enable its applicability as "scaffold" to cellular support and consequent bone tissue formation, accelerating the osseointegration. layer densification has been achieved due to polycrystalline nanoapatites deposition on surface and between the biomineralized nhap/vamwcnt-o2 nanocomposites, without any heat treatment. therefore, through its characteristics and properties these nanocomposite applications can be considered extremely viable for acceleration of in vivo regenerative processes.

Abstract: nanocomposites based on superhydrophilic vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (vamwcnt-o2) and nanohydroxyapatite (nhap) are of great interest in bone regenerative medicine. the biomineralization using simulated body fluid (sbf) has been extensively studied to evaluate the bioactivity of biomaterials. thus, the combination of nhap and vamwcnt-o2 is attractive and promising. the aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro calcification of nhap/vamwcnt-o2 nanocomposites before and after the period of biomineralization in sbf. in vitro calcification of the extracellular matrix (ecm) of hob cells in culture after 24 hours was investigated through the assay of alkaline phosphatase. these promising in vitro results validate biomineralized nhap/vamwcnt-o2 as possible scaffolds for bone tissue regeneration.

Abstract: background: arterial hypertension is an important risk factor for lower-limb occlusive arterial disease (lload). however, the correlation between blood pressure and pulse pressure (pp) with lload severity and functional impairment resulting from this disease is not well established in the brazilian population. objective: to verify whether there is a correlation between blood pressure, pp, lload severity and functional capacity in patients with symptomatic lload. methods: a total of 65 patients (62.2 + 8.1 years, 56.9% males) were evaluated. they were divided into two groups: normal (a) and high (b) blood pressure. lload severity was assessed using the ankle-brachial index (abi) and functional capacity by the total and pain-free walking distance at the 6-minute walking test (6mwt). results: group a consisted of 17 (26.1%) patients. the systolic (sbp), diastolic blood pressure (dbp), and pp were, respectively, 125.4 ±11.7, 74.5 ± 9.1 and 50.9 ± 10.0 mmhg in group a and 160.7 ± 19.6, 90.0 ± 12.2 and 70.7 ± 20.2 mmhg in group b. the abi was significantly lower in group b (0.66 ± 0.12 vs. 0.57 ± 0.13, p <0.05). sbp and pp correlated with lload severity and the distances walked at the 6mwt. patients with pp > 40 mmhg walked shorter distances. conclusion: sbp and pp significantly correlated with the distances walked in the 6mwt, suggesting they are clinical markers of functional capacity impairment in patients with symptomatic lload.
