Abstract:
Psidium guajava L. has extensive use in folk medicine. The aim of this study was to quantify the levels of phenolic, flavonoids, antioxidant activity, leathality assay and antibacterial and antitumoral activities of the extract of P. guajava. In the dry guava extract there were high levels of phenolics (766.08 ± 14.52 mg/g), flavonoids (118.90 ± 5.47 mg/g) and antioxidant activity (87.65%). The LD50 was 185.15 μg/ml. The MIC value was 250 μg/ml for Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus oralis. IC50 of the extract tested in the HeLa, RKO and Wi cell lines was 15.6 ± 0.8 μg/ml, 21.2 ± 1.1 μg/ml and 68.9 ± 1.5 μg/ml, respectively. The results of all analyses allow us to conclude that the dry extract of guava leaves has promising activity to be applied topically in the oral cavity or in the development of antitumor formulation or even be used as a functional food.

Abstract: background: bipolar disorder (bd) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality from metabolic diseases. there is a paucity of data regarding insulin resistance (ir) and its relationship with the metabolic syndrome (ms) in bipolar patients. objective: to evaluate the prevalence of both ir and ms in bd outpatients and to assess clinical criteria associated with ir. method: cross-sectional study in 65 dsm-iv-tr bd patients consecutively assessed at the bipolar disorder program at hospital de clínicas de porto alegre , brazil. ir was diagnosed by the homeostatic model assessment - insulin resistance (homa-ir) and ms was diagnosed using three different definitions: national cholesterol educational program - adult treatment panel iii (ncep-atp iii); ncep-atp iii modified criteria and international diabetes federation. results: ir was present in 43.1% of the sample (women 40%, men 44.4%). the prevalence of ms defined by the ncep-atp iii criteria was 32.3%, ncep-atp iii modified was 40% and idf was 41.5%. ncep-atp iii modified criteria showed the best trade-off between sensitivity (78.6%) and specificity (89.2%) to detect insulin resistance. waist circumference was the clinical parameter most associated with ir. discussion: current ms criteria may provide reasonable sensitivity and specificity for the detection of ir in bd patients. abdominal obesity is closely related to ir in this patient population.

Abstract: disorders involving the nervous system have a great importance in veterinary medicine because they have a high incidence and few auxiliary tools for their diagnostic, prognostic and evaluation of the employed therapy. today, the diagnostic is based, mainly, on the patient history and neurologic examination. hence, evaluation of the cerebrospinal fluid elements is one of the few alternatives to clinically access the central nervous system (cns). even with the great usefullness of the physical-chemical and cytoscopy exams of the csf in veterinary neurology, there are few studies concerning the stability of its elements under freezing storage. the present study was aimed at verifing the influence of temperature and period of conservation on physical-chemical characteristics of the csf of healthy dogs. for that purpose, csf samples were collected by puncture of the cisterna magna of dogs clinically healthy, and then were analysed for density, ph, glucorrhachia, total proteins and activity of the enzymes creatine kinase (ck) and aspartate aminotransferase (ast), after storage in different temperatures (25°c, 4°c and -4°c) and periods (immediately after collection and after 24 hours, 48 hours, a week and a month). regarding the obtained results it was possible to verify that the parameters studied were stable up to a month of storage, under freezing at -4°c.
Assessing Cognitive Flexibility, Communication, Social Interaction and Interest Patterns of Persons with Autism as a Basis for Intervention  [PDF]

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2015.64035
Abstract: The prevalence of people on the autism spectrum can vary from 1% to 1.5% of the population, nowadays. Besides an adequate diagnosis, specialized treatment offered to these people must be a priority for the public health policies and a target of interest for researchers and health professionals. Autism is characterized by the presence of deficits in communication, social interaction and patterns of restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. One of the theories that explain autism points out to disorders in some higher order functions such as failures in cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control and working memory. In this study, 18 persons with autism were assessed in the areas of non-verbal intelligence, cognitive flexibility besides the affected areas in autism: communication, social interaction and patterns of interests and behavior. The aim was to verify if there was a correlation between failures in cognitive flexibility and the main impairments of the autism spectrum. Raven’s Progressive Matrices, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test—WCST and Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised—ADI-R were used. Although correlation between WCST and ADI-R scores did not reach conventional statistical significance on most categories, the category failure to maintain set (FMS) in WCST and difficulties in social interaction in ADI-R were positively correlated with statistical significance. This result indicates a deficit of focused attention related to the subjects’ inability to successfully perform or maintain a social interaction situation. This would not support the idea that these subjects fail to flexibly shift their focus of attention from one stimulus to the other in a social interaction situation. On the contrary, it seems that they shift their focus of attention constantly, once their inability to maintain set is positively correlated with difficulties in social interaction. Nevertheless, further research with a larger number of subjects is necessary in order to clarify if FMS assesses distractibility or cognitive flexibility.
