Using an Ontology to Help Reason about the Information Content of Data  [PDF]

Abstract: We explore how an ontology may be used with a database to support reasoning about the “information content” of data whereby to reveal hidden information that would otherwise not derivable by using conventional database query languages. Our basic ideas rest with “ontology” and the notions of “information content”. A public ontology, if available, would be the best choice for reliable domain knowledge. To enable an ontology to work with a database would involve, among others, certain mechanism thereby the two systems can form a coherent whole. This is achieved by means of the notion of “information content inclusion relation”, IIR for short. We present what an IIR is, and how IIR can be identified from both an ontology and a database, and then reasoning about them.

Abstract: Technological innovation by R&D is at the core of business strategy for firms to compete in the competitive market. This paper tests the correlation between firms R&D investment intensity and the one-year lagged performance of Chinese Listed IT firms, and suggests that firms with an intensive investment strategy in R&D will have significantly larger financial performances in the following year.

Abstract: Wireless node localization is one of the key technologies for wireless sensor networks. Outdoor localization can use GPS, AGPS (Assisted Global Positioning System) [6], but in buildings like supermarkets and underground parking, the accuracy of GPS and even AGPS will be greatly reduced. Since Indoor localization requests higher accuracy, using GPS or AGPS for indoor localization is not feasible in the current view. RSSI-based trilateral localization algorithm, due to its low cost, no additional hardware support, and easy-understanding, it becomes the mainstream localization algorithm in wireless sensor networks. With the development of wireless sensor networks and smart devices, the number of WIFI access point in these buildings is increasing, as long as a mobile smart device can detect three or three more known WIFI hotspots’ positions, it would be relatively easy to realize self-localization (Usually WIFI access points locations are fixed). The key problem is that the RSSI value is relatively vulnerable to the influence of the physical environment, causing large calculation error in RSSI-based localization algorithm. The paper proposes an improved RSSI-based algorithm, the experimental results show that compared with original RSSI-based localization algorithms the algorithm improves the localization accuracy and reduces the deviation.
A New Method to Digitize DNA Sequence  [PDF]

The global description uses composition, transition and distribution to describe an amino acid sequence and has been widely adopted in various fields. Here we integrate it with properties of nucleic acid and form a new method to digitize DNA sequence. Through this method we can use a 39-dimession vector to represent a DNA sequence. We use the exon-1 of β-Globin genes of eight species to verify this method and compare with other methods. A similar result with other method proves that this method is persuading. This method provides a new strategy to digitize DNA sequence and generates DNA sequence descriptor vector. It is different from other methods and this method only produces a 39-dimession vector and not depends on the length of DNA sequence.
Vision Logic and Aesthetic Evolution

Abstract: Visual logic is the most basic logic principle that human beings’ aesthetic taste is based on. Through conducting search on aesthetic taste, we found out the common rule for aesthetic evolution, which is also an evolution process in a sense of meaning. Firstly, visual system apperceives aesthetic objects in a mode similar to computer searches. In the process of apperception, visual system is controlled by “collective unconsciousness” standard formed through the deposition of “collective” experience and by “individual unconsciousness” formed through the accumulation of “individual” experience. The brain clears up the messages through visual logic, and makes deduction, after which the brain could obtain accurate visual apperception. Under proper circumstances, aesthetic resonance is generated. Further, the aesthetic taste of the group could be sublimed, which in turn exerts impact on the “unconsciousness” aesthetic standard of individuals and collective groups. This is the basic way for the evolution of aesthetic taste and is the evolution logic which occurs momently.

Abstract: The chirplet transform is the generalization form of fast Fourier transform , short-time Fourier transform, and wavelet transform. It has the most flexible time frequency window and successfully used in practices. However, the chirplet transform has not inherent inverse transform, and can not overcome the signal reconstructing problem. In this paper, we proposed the improved chirplet transform (ICT) and constructed the inverse ICT. Finally, by simulating the harmonic voltages, The power of the improved chirplet transform are illustrated for harmonic detection. The contours clearly showed the harmonic occurrence time and harmonic duration.
Cluster Analysis on PEAD Using SUE Model with Quarterly Data  [PDF]

Abstract: The paper constructs SUE model with Quarterly Report Data of the A-share listed companies for the first time, to analyze Post-Earnings-Announcement Drift (PEAD) with a higher data frequency. A further cluster analysis is made to examine PEAD phenomenon under different market caps and report periods. The study finds that large cap stocks show stronger PEAD than the small cap. It also firstly finds that PEAD on Q1 is more obvious than others. These findings have practical significance for the investment management decisions and the quantitative trading financial products developments.

Abstract: In order to study the nodes importance of the aviation network of SREB (Silk Road Economic Belt), we construct the network (ANSREB) based on Graph Theory that focused on the actually situation of civil aviation transportation of SREB. We analyzed the evaluation algorithms for nodes importance, proposed the evaluation method for nodes importance of ANSREB; the quantized values of each node (Degree, Betweennesss, Closeness) are calculated with Pajek and traffic data, and determined TOP 20 critical nodes of the network on two different conditions respectively (without and within International routes). Then we contrasted and analyzed the reason that affects the ranking of those vital nodes, which has the character of highly concentration of business and dominant status.
A Case Study of a Regional Torrential Rain in North China Caused by Typhoon Damrey (2012)  [PDF]

Abstract: By using the NCEP/GFS analysis data, CIMISS data, JMA and China’s Typhoon Networks, heavy rainstorm occurred in east of North China associated with Typhoon Damrey from August 3rd to 4th, 2012 was analyzed. Results show during Damrey was going nearby Tianjin City and Hebei province of China, heavy rainstorm was observed in the cities of Qinhuangdao and Tangshan. The southerly jet stream from the southern side of the subtropical high and the periphery of Typhoon Saola is the conveyor belt for water vapor and energy, which enables Damrey to maintain for a long time and provide water vapor and heat conditions for rainfall in east of North China. The structure of Damrey caused a strong updraft in east of North China with a K-index greater than 35°C, which provided a favorable condition for the heavy rainstorm. The typhoon rainstorms in North China are the result of the interaction of the westerly, subtropical and tropical systems. In this heavy rain period, there was an obvious interaction between subtropical and tropical systems. This study has investigated the interaction between the northwestern Pacific typhoon and the North China heavy rainstorm, including the circulation characteristics of the typhoon and North China before and after the regional heavy rainstorm. Additionally, the climate background provides a reliable basis for the heavy rain forecast.
