Abstract:

Early gastric carcinomas may develop with a molecular profile differing from sporadic carcinomas occurring at a later age. In this study, we analyzed a retrospective series of 88 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma diagnosed before the age of 45 years for the presence of TP53 mutations, clinicopathological features and immunohistochemistry to evaluate the expression of markers considered to be important in gastric carcinogenesis (E-cadherin, β-catenin, MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC, MUC6 and p53). The majority of proportion of tumors were diffuse-type (70%) and advanced stage (56%). Familial history of cancer was positive in 21% of the cases. There was a significant association between altered expression of E-cadherin and β-catenin, and between p53 expression and perineural invasion. TP53 mutations were detected in 14.5% of evaluated cases, including a germline mutation (p.R337H) in a 12-year old patient. Overall survival analysis showed significant differences in relation with tumor stage and histopathology. The evaluated biomarkers did not present prognostic value in non-exploratory multivariate analyses. The low frequency of TP53 mutations in this series suggests these alterations are not a major molecular event in gastric cancer occurring at early age, although the identification of a case with germline p.R337H mutation is consistent with the hypothesis that a small proportion of early, apparently sporadic gastric cancer, may be associated with widespread Brazilian founder mutations. Further studies are needed to evaluate the prognostic significance of markers for specific groups of patients according to tumor histology and familial history.

Se exponen las indicaciones y los resultados de la técnica de intubación, con auxilio del fibroscopio, en pacientes no anestesiados Certain maxillofacial conditions may lead to a compulsory tracheostomy and even, after some years, to fiberscope-assisted intubation before proceeding to a general anesthesia surgery. Abstract: objective: bone metastasis still represents one of the main complications of breast cancer during the follow up of these patients. the objective of the current series was to determine the prevalence of bone metastasis in patients diagnosed of breast adenocarcinoma at our center, the location and number of lesions, treatment selected and the overall patient survival. methods: a retrospective study of a group of female patients with a diagnosis of breast adenocarcinoma and bone metastasis was carried out during a ten year period, between the years 1996 and 2005. medical charts of 1 610 women were analyzed. results: we found 200 cases with bone metastases, 90 % were diagnosed by bone scans. the ages of these patients ranged between 41 and 50 years. metastatic bone disease was multiple in 55 % of cases. all the patients received radiotherapy treatment. the main location of the bone lesions was the spine, accounting for 33 % of all cases. overall survival was one year in this group. conclusions: bone metastasis is a frequent clinical finding in the setting of breast adenocarcinoma. prognosis is dismal and it is corroborated when we compare our results to those reported in the literature.
Alternative Sensor System and MLP Neural Network for Vehicle Pedal Activity Estimation
Ahmed M. Wefky,Felipe Espinosa,José A. Jiménez,Enrique Santiso,José M. Rodríguez,Alfredo J. Fernández
Sensors , 2010, DOI: 10.3390/s100403798
Abstract: It is accepted that the activity of the vehicle pedals (i.e., throttle, brake, clutch) reflects the driver’s behavior, which is at least partially related to the fuel consumption and vehicle pollutant emissions. This paper presents a solution to estimate the driver activity regardless of the type, model, and year of fabrication of the vehicle. The solution is based on an alternative sensor system (regime engine, vehicle speed, frontal inclination and linear acceleration) that reflects the activity of the pedals in an indirect way, to estimate that activity by means of a multilayer perceptron neural network with a single hidden layer.

Differential Binary Encoding Method for Calibrating Image Sensors Based on IOFBs
Pedro R. Fernández,José Luis Lázaro-Galilea,Alfredo Gardel,Felipe Espinosa,Ignacio Bravo,ángel Cano
Sensors , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/s120404133
Abstract: Image transmission using incoherent optical fiber bundles (IOFBs) requires prior calibration to obtain the spatial in-out fiber correspondence necessary to reconstruct the image captured by the pseudo-sensor. This information is recorded in a Look-Up Table called the Reconstruction Table (RT), used later for reordering the fiber positions and reconstructing the original image. This paper presents a very fast method based on image-scanning using spaces encoded by a weighted binary code to obtain the in-out correspondence. The results demonstrate that this technique yields a remarkable reduction in processing time and the image reconstruction quality is very good compared to previous techniques based on spot or line scanning, for example.
