Abstract: The activities of laboratories have always been demands of university students and even high school. In schools where lessons were practical of laboratories, especially in the area of chemistry, very little is talked about the care of the waste generated in laboratories, this concern has become from the 90’s. Today, care of waste generated in laboratory practical is a prerequisite for environmental protection in addition to theoretical activities. This paper presents simple activities of management and treatment of waste generated in the practical lessons of Chemistry Course (UFSCar). In the study was used the waste itself as reagents in the treatment of toxic metals and other hazardous environmentally substances. The results showed an excellent regeneration of the treated material, minimizing the toxicity of products, greatly increasing the amount of new experiences.

Abstract: The benefits of using experiments in physics classes are widely discussed in the literature, but sometimes experimental setups are not available. In this paper we present different ways of using experiments in physics classes based on the Arduino board, since it involves low cost materials and can be built by the own students in several cases. In this work we addressed the well known damped harmonic oscillator and performed the data acquisition through the Arduino board, a LDR (Light Dependent Resistor), a infrared photodiode sensor and a computer. The setup of the proposed experiment and the technical details related to assembly are discussed in a clear way in order to be reproduced by anyone interested in the subject. We found a significant difference in the results obtained through the LDR and the photodiode. The later has given better results and has reproduced a regular decay in the amplitude of the oscillator even when the experiment was performed in a highly illuminated room. The Arduino board, alongside the referred peripherals, has shown great potential for building low cost experimental setups to be used in physics classes, both for expositive and hands on approaches.

Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0001-37652005000200011
Abstract: holocene beachrocks of the jaguaribe beach, state of pernambuco, northeastern brazil, consist of horizontal, cemented layers approximately 40 cm thick. the cement shows three textural varieties: (a) calciferous, surrounding siliciclastic grains, (b) micritic, with an acicular fringe; and (c) cryptocrystalline calcite in pores. early cementation took place at the water table below beach ridges, where geochemical, hydrodynamic and, perhaps, also microbiological conditions favored rapid precipitation of aragonite and/or high-mg calcite. d13c values range from -1.8 to +1.5? for dissolved carbonate in interstitial water and from +0.2 to +2.1? for bioclastic components. d18o values range from -2.8 to +0.5? for seawater, freshwater and interstitial water. d13c values and diagenetic features suggest that cementation occurred in meteoric-vadose and/or marine-phreatic water by loss of co2 during evaporation of the interstitial water. locally, superimposed low-mg calcite cements point to subsequent freshwater influence. total-rock cement composition of vertically stacked beachrock beds at the jaguaribe beach shows that the highest beachrock bed is older than the one (of same petrographic composition) situated at the current groundwater level. this implies a downward progression of cementation, which probably followed the sea-level fall after a local high stand.

Biology of Sport , 2003,
Abstract: The aim of the study was evaluation of electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameters in athletes. Athletic heart” characteristics were compared with fit persons’ heart. 96 athletes participated in the study. Sportsmen were divided into: static (S), dynamic (D) and composite (SD) exercise groups and Polish (I), European (II), World (III) champions. 30 students from Sport Academy formed the control group (K). Electrocardiographic and echocardiographic examination were performed in everyone. As regards the type of exercise, the end-systolic left ventricular (LV) dimension was smaller in S in comparison with D and SD (28.9 vs 32.2 and 32.68 mm; P<0.05). LV mass was bigger in D in comparison with K (273.2 vs 218.6 g; P<0.05). Medium Pulmonary Artery Pressure (MPAP) in S and SD was lower in respect to D and K (11.75; 11.08 vs 15.52; 17.43 mm Hg; P<0.05). We observed lower heart rate in D, SD in comparison with K (58.64; 60.54 vs 68.8; P<0.05), bigger R wave amplitude in V5 (RV5) (21.65; 23.5 vs 15.03 mm; P<0.05) and V6 (RV6) (23.5 vs 15.3 mm; P<0.05) in group S in respect to K. LV mass was bigger in III than in K (261.3 vs 218.6 g; P<0.05). MPAP was lower in I and II in comparison with K (11.42; 13.13 vs 17.43 mmHg; P<0.05). HR was lower in categories I, II than in K (61.32; 60.13 vs 68.8; P<0.05), RV5 was bigger in I in comparison with K (19.5 vs 15.03 mm; P<0.05). The electrocardiography and echocardiography proves to find some significant differences between athletic and fit persons’ heart especially as concerns MPAP, RV5, RV6 values.

Two experiments were carried out under greenhouse conditions with the objective of evaluating the reaction of eight corn genotypes to the root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne javanica and M. incognita. Cultivars HAT -1001, HAT -1045, DINA-657 and FT-5140 presented smaller reproduction factors (RF) for M. javanica. Therefore, the use of these cultivars may be indicated in the crop rotation program with soybean. All cultivars were suitable hosts for M. incognita,
