Who Makes a Devil out of a Fair Lady? —An Analysis of the Social Causes of Emily’s Tragedy in A Rose for Emily

Abstract: William Faulkner (1897—1962) is now regarded as the greatest American novelist of the twentieth century.“ A Rose for Emily” was his first published short story in 1930. It depicts Emily Grierson, a noble old spinster, who falls in love with a Yankee, Homer, and later kills him and has slept with the dead body for forty years. Since then, Emily isolates herself from the outside world and lives lonely in her house until her death. Since its publication, “A Rose for Emily” has enjoyed great attention due to its adroit plot and impressive character, so that the readers merely view it as a Gothic novel. They are impressed and horrified by the gloomy atmosphere as well as the grotesque behavior of Emily. However, this story cannot be read merely as a detective story so as to overlook the profound meaning behind it. Emily’s killing of Homer is not due to her blood-thirsty nature, rather it is the result of the southern society. After analysizing the social causes of Emily’s tragic change from a lady into a devil, eventually the paper comes to a conclusion that Emily’s degradation is a series of consequence of the southern social system: patriarchal chauvinism, puritan womanhood, conflict between community and individual. In fact, she is the victim of the southern tradition and culture. Through this kind of study, the reader can get a further understanding of the then American south and Faulkner’s intention to write such a horrifying short story. Une Rose pour Emily est sa première nouvelle publiée en 1930. Ce livre décrit Emily Grierson, une vieille fille, qui tombe amoureux d’un Yankee, Homer, et le tue après pour dormir avec le cadavre pour 40 ans. Dès lors, elle s’isole du monde extérieur et vit solitairement dans sa maison jusqu’à la mort. Depuis sa publication, Une Rose pour Emily attirent beaucoup d’attention grace à son intrigue habile et son caractère impressif, de sorte que les lecteurs le considèrent seulement comme une nouvelle gothique. Ils sont impressionnés et horrifiés par l’atmosphère sombre et le comportement grotesque d’Emily. Néanmoins, cette nouvelle ne peut nuellement être lue comme une histoire policière et on ne peut pas négliger sa signification profonde. Abstract: 0.7Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.3PbTiO3 (0.7PNN-0.3PT) and 1 mol% La2O3-, Y2O3-, ZnO-, MnO2- and Nb2O5-doped 0.7PNN- 0.3PT ferroelectric ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method via the columbite precursor route. The ceramics sintered at 1180℃ exhibit pure rhombohedral perovskite structure except the Y2O3-doped 0.7PNN-0.3PT ceramics. The oxide-doped 0.7PNN-0.3PT ceramics exhibit rather homogeneous microstructure and improved densification, especially for the MnO2-and La2O3-doped 0.7PNN-0.3PT (defect) ceramics whose relative density is larger than 96%. All the above dopants decrease the dielectric loss of the 0.7PNN-0.3PT ceramics, whereas the values of the dielectric maximum (?m) and the temperature of ?m (Tm), and the character of dielectric response vary differently. ZnO and Nb2O5 doping increase remanent polarization Pr, and La2O3, ZnO, MnO2 and Nb2O5 doping decrease coercive field Ec of the 0.7PNN-0.3PT ceramics. Piezoelectric property is greatly improved by Y2O3, MnO2, Nb2O5 and ZnO doping, where the MnO2-doped 0.7PNN-0.3PT ceramics exhibit the largest value of piezoelectric constant d33, which reaches 191 pC/N.

Abstract: Nowadays, people are busier and busier for working and living, and suffer a lot of pressure on their body or mind. Therefore, people are prone to have fatigue activity and decrease their working efficiency and happiness. It was reported that fatigue is a common symptom in the community, with up to half of the general population complaining of fatigue. More and more researchers devoted themselves to studying natural active ingredients in organism as the anti-fatigue drugs to release fatigue symptom. However, these natural ingredients were difficult to obtain from plants, animals and microorganisms by separating and purifying. In addition, some active substances have many side effects. In our study, we employed tea seed oil as main ingredients blended with bis-(carboxyethylgermanium) sesquioxide (Ge-132) to investigate the effects of anti-fatigue on mice by administrating mice with low dose, intermediate dose and high dose of tea seed oil complex for 0, 2 or 4 weeks. The specific tests of studying effects of anti-fatigue were body weight, weight-loaded force swimming, blood urea nitrogen, blood lactic acid and hepaticglycogen. And the results showed that appropriate level of tea seed oil complex could decrease the body weight and prolong the weight-loaded swimming time, and had an active effect on the bloodurea nitrogen, hepatic glycogen and blood lactic acid level mice, which significantly embodied the anti-fatigue activity of tea seed oil complex.

Abstract: This study aimed to research the living status and support system of children orphaned by AIDS in rural Henan Province. The approach of face-to-face questionnaires research was used to assess 501 children’s current situation while in-depth interview was conducted for the support system research. The age range of the children orphaned by AIDS was 2 - 15 years old and the mean age was 11.10 years. Most children among 2 - 6 years had communication skills with temper control and psychological problems. Children of 7 - 15 years old had the ability to take care of themselves and family members but could not do self-regulation. The support system for children orphaned by AIDS included social support, policies support, education support, and health care support but improvement are needed in the future. Support system can be improved through much more feasible and concrete policies and strategies to guarantee these children’s basic needs and comprehensive development.
Uniform Approximation Is More Appropriate for Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test in Gene Set Analysis

Abstract: Gene set analysis is widely used to facilitate biological interpretations in the analyses of differential expression from high throughput profiling data. Wilcoxon Rank-Sum (WRS) test is one of the commonly used methods in gene set enrichment analysis. It compares the ranks of genes in a gene set against those of genes outside the gene set. This method is easy to implement and it eliminates the dichotomization of genes into significant and non-significant in a competitive hypothesis testing. Due to the large number of genes being examined, it is impractical to calculate the exact null distribution for the WRS test. Therefore, the normal distribution is commonly used as an approximation. However, as we demonstrate in this paper, the normal approximation is problematic when a gene set with relative small number of genes is tested against the large number of genes in the complementary set. In this situation, a uniform approximation is substantially more powerful, more accurate, and less intensive in computation. We demonstrate the advantage of the uniform approximations in Gene Ontology (GO) term analysis using simulations and real data sets.

Reviewing and reflecting on the history, target, pattern, scope of the Chinese new agricultural subsidy system, this paper discusses the dilemma of subsidy target, irrational subsidy structure and environmental pollution. Finally the bottleneck of Chinese new agricultural subsidy system and its development direction are discussed.
Effects of Unconscious Processing on Implicit Memory for Fearful Faces

Abstract: Emotional stimuli can be processed even when participants perceive them without conscious awareness, but the extent to which unconsciously processed emotional stimuli influence implicit memory after short and long delays is not fully understood. We addressed this issue by measuring a subliminal affective priming effect in Experiment 1 and a long-term priming effect in Experiment 2. In Experiment 1, a flashed fearful or neutral face masked by a scrambled face was presented three times, then a target face (either fearful or neutral) was presented and participants were asked to make a fearful/neutral judgment. We found that, relative to a neutral prime face (neutral–fear face), a fearful prime face speeded up participants' reaction to a fearful target (fear–fear face), when they were not aware of the masked prime face. But this response pattern did not apply to the neutral target. In Experiment 2, participants were first presented with a masked faces six times during encoding. Three minutes later, they were asked to make a fearful/neutral judgment for the same face with congruent expression, the same face with incongruent expression or a new face. Participants showed a significant priming effect for the fearful faces but not for the neutral faces, regardless of their awareness of the masked faces during encoding. These results provided evidence that unconsciously processed stimuli could enhance emotional memory after both short and long delays. It indicates that emotion can enhance memory processing whether the stimuli are encoded consciously or unconsciously.

Abstract: The title compound, C18H11N2O+·Cl ·H2O, was prepared by the reaction of 1,8-naphthalic anhydride with o-phenylenediamine in DMF. The dihedral angle formed by the phenyl and naphthalic rings is 177.06°. The structure is stabilized by intramolecular C—H...O hydrogen bonds. There are N—H...Cl, O—H...Cl, C—H...O and C—H...Cl hydrogen bonds in the structure.
