Clinical Ophthalmology , 2012, DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.2147/OPTH.S33017
Abstract: mparative study of 1+PRN ranibizumab versus bevacizumab in the clinical setting Original Research (1449) Total Article Views Authors: Carneiro AM, Mendon a LS, Falc o MS, Fonseca SL, Brand o EM, Falc o-Reis FM Published Date July 2012 Volume 2012:6 Pages 1149 - 1157 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.2147/OPTH.S33017 Received: 16 April 2012 Accepted: 05 June 2012 Published: 19 July 2012 Angela M Carneiro,1,2 Luis S Mendon a,1 Manuel S Falc o,1,2 Sofia L Fonseca,1 Elisete M Brand o,1 Fernando M Falc o-Reis1,2 1Department of Ophthalmology of Hospital de S o Jo o, Porto, Portugal; 2Faculty of Medicine of University of Porto, Porto, Portugal Purpose: We compared the efficacy of intravitreal ranibizumab and bevacizumab for treating neovascular age-related macular degeneration using an on-demand regimen. Methods: A total of 186 wet age-related macular degeneration eyes of 186 treatment-na ve patients were compared retrospectively (67 eyes treated with ranibizumab with 91 treated with bevacizumab). At baseline, mean age, best corrected visual acuity, and angiographic lesion types were similar in both groups. Best corrected visual acuity and ocular coherence tomography were evaluated. Results: Sixty eyes treated with ranibizumab and 85 eyes treated with bevacizumab completed a 12-month evaluation. At 12 months, mean best corrected visual acuity increased by +6.65 letters with ranibizumab treatment and by +5.59 with bevacizumab treatment (P = 0.64). Visual acuity improved by ≥15 letters in 15 eyes treated with ranibizumab and in 21 eyes treated with bevacizumab (P = 0.75). An overall reduction in ocular coherence tomography central thickness occurred for all time points. The mean number of injections per eye was 5.97 with ranibizumab and 5.92 with bevacizumab (P = 0.90). Conclusion: Intravitreal therapies with ranibizumab or bevacizumab have similar visual and anatomical results. These results confirm those of comparison of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Treatment Trials in as-needed cohorts in clinical practice. Randomized long-term clinical trials are necessary to examine the systemic safety of these treatments.

Integra??o de um Visualizador Interactivo de Paisagens Florestais num Sistema de Apoio à Decis?o em Gest?o de Recursos Naturais: Aplica??o à Serra da Lous?
Falco,André O.;
Silva Lusitana , 2004,
Abstract: this paper presents preliminary research results relating to the integration of a 3d forest landscape visualiser within a decision support system in natural resources management. it focus primarily on inventory and spatial data processing, to be used by a simulator and prescription writer for forest ecosystems. the data transformation path is followed up to the management models. it is also discussed the numerical data conversion process proceeding from these models and its geographic pre-processing so that it may be used as input to the 3d visualiser. the system is demonstrated by applying it to a forest area of 460 ha located in the mountain range serra da lous? in central portugal.
Um novo modelo de armadilha luminosa de suc??o para pequenos insetos
Falco, Alberto Rocha;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1981, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761981000300009
Abstract: a new model of a fan-suction lighttrap for collecting small insects is described. its advantages include easily obtained material, robust construction, battery operation, portability and low cost. in addition, being opaque it permits a high concentration of light on the opening through which the insects are sucked in.
A sociedade cibernética
Vieira, Euripedes Falco;
Cadernos EBAPE.BR , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-39512006000200008
Abstract: this paper analyzes the changes that have occurred in society during its transition from industrial modernity to the cybernetic modernity. these periods were characterized by different events in the fields of technology, knowledge and information. changes that occurred in all segments of society in the last two decades have produced significant transformations in the cognitive framework, changing behavior and mechanisms of action and reaction in face of a new reality. clearly, this new reality has imposed itself and advanced as a cybernetic society, a cyberspace-time society with its still short narratives about economic, social and cultural events.
The presence of Chane Nieto and Guajirolus Flowers (Ephemeroptera, Baetidae) in Brazil with the description of a new species
Salles, Frederico Falco;
Revista Brasileira de Entomologia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0085-56262007000400002
Abstract: the related genera chane and guajirolus are reported for the first time from brazil. guajirolus rondoni, sp. n. is described based on nymphs from rond?nia state and can be differentiated from the other species of the genus by the following combination of characteristics: 1) mandibles with minute spicules on outer margin; 2) maxillary palp three-segmented; 3) hypopharynx lingua with three rounded processes; 4) projection of second segment of labial palp with apex narrower than base; 5) abdominal color pattern; and 6) paraprocts with 13 to 15 organized spines. an updated key to the species of both genera is presented.
Prolifera??o monoclonal B CD5+ subclínica
Falco, Roberto P.;
Revista Brasileira de Hematologia e Hemoterapia , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-84842005000400010
Abstract: monoclonal b cd5+ subclinical proliferation is related to a group of clinical or laboratory entities described in normal subjects (0.14%-5.5%), in normal members of families with cases of familial cll (13.5%-18%) and in patients with monoclonal b lympho-cytosis with lymphocyte counts of <5 x 109/l and with <30% of lymphocytes in bone marrow. these three entities are now named monoclonal b-cell lymphocytosis. additionally, there are cases that fulfill the diagnostic criteria for cll but present with stable non-progressive disease and are also named as benign monoclonal b lymphocytosis, smoldering cll, idiopathic persistent chronic lymphocytosis, and b-monoclonal lympho-cytosis of undetermined significance.
Meio modificado de cultura para caracteriza??o de Salmonella lactose positiva
Falco,Deise Pasetto;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1976, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101976000100006
Abstract: a modified culture medium was developed for the purpose of isolating and characterizing the enterobacterias, giving special attention to the salmonella strains that ferment lactose. in this "modified medium" the colonies of the two strains of salmonella show a morphological similarity. this does not occur with other culture media of enterobacteria, in which the basic carbohydrate is lactose. the modified medium is a modification of the enteric agar in which the lactose was substituted by xilose and l-lisine. it was verified that there is a possibility of differentiating between the different groups of enterobacteria by using a culture medium with no lactose and using xilose l-lisina as a differentiating system. the modified medium was also evaluated quantitatively comparing its enriching or inhibiting power with the hektoen enteric agar, brilliant green agar and the ss agar media in relation to the different groups of enterobacteria.
Em busca de uma teoria da burocracia pública n?o-estatal: política e administra??o no terceiro setor
Falco Martins, Humberto;
Revista de Administra??o Contemporanea , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-65551998000300007
Abstract: the article aims at exploring some elements so as to provide a theoretical framework concerning the non-state public bureaucracy - the so called non profit ngos which operates in the public sphere and are allegedly not prone to state bureaucracies' dysfunctions. the author follows a three step methodology: a) concept building on state bureaucracies' dysfunctions related to political and other organizational issues which underlies ineffectiveness, patrimonial action and bureaucratic insulation; b) comparative analysis on whether such dysfunctions are more or less supposed to occur in non-state bureaucracies; and c) formulation of contemporary state and non-state bureaucratic effectiveness' requisites such as social embeddedness and political regulation. i suggest that non-state bureaucracy is more prone to achieve social embeddedness while less prone to be politically regulated in an universal basis. i argue that this condition requires in some cases a kind of political regulation integrated to the state once the control that flows from the political society is not by itself enough to make non-state bureaucracies dysfunctions safe.
